What are you listening to? Do not post haram music videos in this topic. Thanks! Although I do love to read, more than anything else, I have found that sometimes I like listening to audio while I go for a walk or do chores around the house. Everyone can listen to audio and learn something. I have listened to The Story Collider. Some stories are dramatic and some are funny, by people who somehow used SCIENCE in their daily life. Listener beware. Not responsible for STRONG language in a podcast. Each story has a photo of the storyteller and a description below about the story. Please don't waste your time to listen to a story that you are not interested in.

Some talk radio is OK. Sometimes it is really interesting. Science Friday on NPR is good (1400-1600 Eastern Time).

A couple of local radio stations are good.

Most syndicated programs are blaugh, dumb, packaged, ...

@everyone This topic is not for videos. I like to listen to TED talk videos, but they should go in video topics. This topic is for audio, please.

@Connectors I moved your beautiful nasheed video here:

Talk Radio and Podcasts are a really interesting media - I'm looking for some good new suggestions to listen to at the moment. (especially by groups/hosts which are lesser known/out of the mainstream - and cover topics such as Commons Theory / Faith & Co-Operatives / Bioethics)

It's especially curious when we consider that before we had written cultures - we had oratory, or spoken cultures. Recitation, speech and dialogue, are not the most long-lasting formats (with the exception of the Qur'an which is immaculately transmitted); but they are very intuitive, accessible and open to a depth and nuance, in a different way to written material. I love both modes.

Some suggestions which I have enjoyed, I encourage you to look for a recording that resonates with you and try it out [and critique/suggest material I don't know of too!]:

On Being with Krista Tippett

Things Unseen

Anxious Machine

Cambridge Khutbas etc.

History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps

Neighbors

ARRVLS

Dial A Stranger
http://www.dialastranger.com/

BBC Radio 4 - which has a large selection of factual material, and interesting ethical conversations

If anyone knows of any good Radio/Audio media coming from a Shia perspective - ( or want to start making one together as an exploration :) ) I would really appreciate the suggestions!

One Pioneer Woman's Story Of Life On The Mississippi Delta.

A woman’s life on the American Frontier: We’ll open an old memoir of homesteading on the Mississippi Delta. We know that settling the American frontier was not all “Westward Ho!” hat-waving and cowboys singing Oklahoma. But just how hard it could be can elude us. The long-unpublished memoir of Mary Mann Hamilton should set us straight. Her frontier was the untamed Mississippi Delta. Her life was a story of Biblical suffering, labor, loss, fire, flood, isolation, despair – and somehow she lived to 90...

If I remember correctly, this interview with her relatives mentions that she met and married her husband in 1880. Knowing what she went through makes my life seem easy.

How Silicon Valley Can Help You Get Unstuck (28 minute audio)

Quote

Many of us feel stuck: stuck at work, stuck in the wrong city, stuck in life. When that happens, we often end up asking ourselves "what should I do, where should I live, what's my ideal life?" It turns out these normal questions are counterproductive to getting us unstuck. They place an unbearable pressure on us, the pressure to know how things are supposed to turn out. The next time that happens to you, think of your life the way a designer at a tech company thinks of a new product. You don't quite know what you want to build. Just for fun, you come up with a prototype, then a second, and a third. You pay attention to whether you enjoy building one kind of protype or another. You listen to feedback from others. You go back to the drawing board and try again.....

Since childhood I have been through many tornado warnings while living in Oklahoma and Kansas. At least once a year I have a dream where I see a huge tornado approaching and I scream to warn my family members and they are saved from danger. :)

This podcast contains audio from people who survived a real tornado. It is intense. I pray that nobody has to experience this. Listening to the first 17 minutes is enough. Maybe there is music at the end or a commercial. I forget which. Or perhaps both. :D

I have the National Public Radio 'npr one' app on my phone and they produce their own shows or feature work that they recommend from other podcasts. When I hear something interesting, I look it up online and post the link in this topic. That way if you read the description about an audio program, you can decide if you would be interested or not.

Podcast: Life Effects - Pop Depression (26 minute audio) from SLATE

Quote

Depression often plays a starring role in the entertainment world, although some representations of the condition are more truthful and helpful than others. In Episode 3 of Life Effects, guest John Moe talks about how Depression is portrayed in the pop culture – both good and bad – and discusses how his personal podcast [The Hilarious World of Depression (THWOD)] contributes to the conversation.

Another podcast is called Kind World. It has stories about compassion.

Quote

Karim Alagha worked for 25 years at a gas station in Cambridge. He was immensely loving and deeply empathetic; he asked people how they felt and truly listened to their answers. Over time, a community formed around Karim and the station. An invisible community that was not even aware of itself until Karim fell sick.

After clicking on the link, you need to click on the "Load More Episodes" button about 4 times, until you can see Kind World #3: Remembering Karim.

Remember that people will like you more than you think they will

When you are moving through the world, don't forget that human connection is yours for the taking. It's science: Gillian Sandstrom, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, has done research on something called the "liking gap," which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody didn't like you very much is wrong, so don't listen to it.

"When you talk to someone else, you're actually going to brighten their day," Sandstrom says.
