Causes of social dysfunctionality

Amongst some people it is fashionable to lay the blame for various types of social dysfunctionality in Muslim countries on Islam. Contrasts are often made with conditions in developed countries.

I often contend that the difference is more an artefact of poverty and other socio-economic factors, than religion. So for example, the extreme violence that we see undertaken by ISIS has parallels with the violence delivered by south American drug lords (including macabre ways of killing people). And in both instances, this is a method for exercising control rather than an artefact of ideology.

The following story illustrates another form of social dysfunctionality in another non-Muslim country.

Tens of thousands of children believed to be victims of live-streaming abuse, some of it being carried out by their own parents

Stephanie McCourt, the south-east Asia liaison officer for the UK’s National Crime Agency, said the Philippines provided a perfect storm to allow the crime to develop, with its entrenched poverty and high level of internet access for a developing country. But there is one thing that she said was absolutely key: a widespread knowledge of the English language.

Now, the United Nations says, there are tens of thousands of children believed to be involved in a rapidly expanding local child abuse industry already worth US$1bn.

In some areas, entire communities live off the business, abetted by increasing internet speeds, advancing cameraphone technology, and growing ease of money transfers across borders.

It is three things that when brought together lead to the type of situation mentioned above.

1) Environmental. Lack of opportunities to make a living in a decent, halal for those on the bottom of the socio-economic ladder.

2) Individual. An individual who lacks morals and values.

3) Government. A government that does not enforce laws (or enforces them very inconsistently) against this type of activity in certain areas.

All three of these factors need to be present. If one is absent, then it doesn't happen, or happens very infrequently.

So that is why we say in Islam, although the government and environment push individuals hard, most of the time, in a certain direction, the outcome is not certain and still, even in this circumstance, the individual has free will.

There really should be some rules and regulations on who is allowed to have children . Not everyone is fit to be a parent. Some people can't even take care of themselves , how can they bring up children??

If you study the demographics there is an inverse correlation between wealth and religiosity. Rich people are less religious and vice versa. And because the certain social problems are more common among the poor, by association it  can be said that the religious people are socially more dysfunctional.  While this statement might be a 'statistically true fact' it's still false because other important facts are being left out. Even if we take it to be correct religion means christianity , judaism and islam plus others , so the people blaming islam either do not know what they are talking about or they are just spewing their hatred towards muslims.
