It's true . A wife can demand money from her husband for nursing his child.

I am in a hurry right now but I will post the ruling later if someone else hasn't done it by then.

@Um-e-Farwa

2496. The child's mother is the best person to suckle a child. It is better that she does not claim any award from her husband for suckling the child, although it is good that he should reward her for that. However, if the mother demands more payment for suckling than a wet-nurse, her husband can entrust the child to the wet-nurse.

A strange philosophy. What if a mother cannot produce milk and the baby is handed over to a wet nurse or is brought up on milk purchased from shops: Can the husband ask for money from his wife the mother of the child for incurring costs to feed the child since she cannot produce milk?

Absolutely true, it is a law but if mother does not ask for it or refuse it, it is upto the mother.

Other things which she can ask her husband besides conjugal rights are:

1. Her Mehar or money liable to be given to her as mentioned in marriage contract as per Islamic laws.

2. Money for her maintenance such as food, clothing and other necessities of life because now it's her husband to which all these responsibilities belong since she left her father's home.

3. Her personal room where she can live along with her husband and keep her things safe.

4. Respect which is also an important thing to be given to wife.

And so on so forth.

Salam OP something being *allowed* doesnt mean its a good idea. for example its allowed for a 18 year old boy to marry a 90 year old woman - does this mean that he should?

a woman has a right to demand an allowance from her husband, its part of her haqq. its expected however that she waive it out of her grace, and the husband be grateful towards her. this inshaAllah increases the love between the couple.

No, nothing strange. It's not the mother's responsibility to feed the child. All the expenses regarding child upbringing  have to be borne by the father.

its funny how many westerners are always bleating about how women are treated/oppressed in Islam but do not know that women have had this right for the last 1400 years.

Hahahaha, you see here, now if husband gives money to wife for raising children now muslim woman is not good. Islam is just speaking about rights, if one does not want, it's up to her lol

Of course it's going to depend on individual circumstances. Just because something is permitted doesn't mean it is required. I don't think it is a good idea to negatively judge those who feel that they need to exercise this right.

I imagine this right could be useful in mutah marriages, in which the husband is not obligated to provide for his wife, but caring for the infant interferes with the wife's ability to provide for herself. I'm sure there are other situations too.

Islamically the only duty/obligation on the wife is to raise children to the best of her ability and she can charge for it.

Even things such as cooking and cleaning are not required of her.

A woman only produces milk when she bears a child. This is nature's gift, a way of providing food for the baby.  So the milk gifted to her by nature, is for the baby and not for her to sell. The baby has a natural and if I may say God given right over its mother's milk. For a woman to deliberately refuse her milk to her baby or feed it on the condition of payment from her husband, is a breach of nature's rules. This would be a breach of the baby's rights.  A man must provide for the upkeep of his wife and children. He is responsible for them but I cannot simply digest the notion that a woman can demand payment for breast feeding her own baby. It is not logical. I know that these days Muslims are desperate to prove that Islam is woman friendly and women's rights etc but in their quest to prove Islam's credentials regarding women's rights there is no need to go overboard.

True again but statement that she can ask the husband for the price comes from the Quranic rule that the husband is responsible for all the baby's upbringing.

It is not meant to be realistic but is just a way of laying emphasis on the husband's responsibilities in maintaining the family.

That is all.

That was in a time when a woman can be traded for a goat or camel and its properties were compared to tharad...the best Arabian food

Nowadays ask before marriage if a woman expects payment for breast milk jettison her right away
