Is a man's friendship with females a sin?

I am in the 11th grade, and a brother, and I have a friend at school who is a girl, who is in the 12th grade, and is Muslim, but is not very religious. For instance, she doesn't pray 5 times a day or 3 times a day, and she doesn't fast during Ramadan.....I am wondering if that is haram, because it says in the Qur'an (I forget which verse) "...do not approach zina.." rather than "do not committ zina" and many Muslim preachers and Muslims I know think this is haram....is there really harm in just being friends, or is this not modest?

Assalam aleikum,

It is best to cautious when around non-mahram members of the opposite gender. The reason why so many scholars are against the idea of men and women being friends is because its a starting point in which it can be easy to commit zina.

I am no scholar nor a learned religious men. I will just state my opinion. I think male/female friendship dosen't really exist and even Atheists say that. One of the them will love the other and vice-versa . Maybe i am wrong but most of the times i observed that a friendship between a man and a woman leads to love/lust

It really depends on what you consider a friend. There's nothing wrong with being friendly in public if there is absolutely no chance of being tempted to sin. It might be a sin to be close confidantes, where temptation increases, and it definitely is a sin to meet privately to socialize, when there is greatest risk of temptation.

When looking at non mehram  (opposite gender) is haram then friendship among them (opposite genders) is out of the question as these are the main tools of iblees (shaytan) to strike the believers to stay  away from Islam

In most cases such friendship will cause to sin and bear in mind that committing sin with females is not limited in Zina as some may say that we are only friends and no chance to be committing zina.

every thing that may arouse every one of you even slightly to think of one another with joy should be considered Haram.

And make sure Shaytan will not sit aside as bystander looking at you. for sure will tempt you or your female friend to have some seductive behavior.

Surely the Shaitan is an open enemy to man( 12:5 )
