salam, Ya Ali madad

I was wondering about the significance of the different colors of the alam (flag) of Ghazi Abbas a.s. that people raise on the roofs of their houses.

black is obvious, and most common... so is the red alam: to my mind it recalls the Blood of mola Hussain a.s. and his companions and all the shuhuda that precede and follow them... i sometimes think though: wasnt red the color of the standards/flags of the Shami army in Karbala?

my landlady once put up a green one.

i even saw a silver/white one in passing

Theres no significance - the alam is made up of 3 parts - the mashkeeza (water bag), the chadars (representing the chadors of the household) and the panja (symbol of the holy 5 & ghazi abbas as)

Colours depend on personal preference

Black: mourning

Red: revenge of Imam Hussain's blood is pending (that is why the flag on the roza in Imam Hussain as and Hz Abbas as is red

Green: Color of Bani Hashim (Syeds).

White: Peace.

Very Interesting, thank you. In 404 the main alam in the courtyard is green on wiladats/ eid, red throughout the year and black in muharram, so what you say definitely rings true with me. the smaller alams that people can carry are all possible colours - purples, blues, silver etc.

I used to wonder, we are huge Shia communities spread across the UK and yet I haven't met anyone here from known or similar circles. Well that's changed now
