Salam is there any school of thought that fits between sunni and shia ?

For example a group that believe Ali was the chosen successor, admit to mistakes of the first caliphs, but not in the following imams or their infallibility.

Note this is just and example, any examples of groupsdo not need to fit this criteria just generally be in between.

Brother - the Prophet said he is leaving behind the Quran and the Ahlulbayt so that we may not go astray. He did not say you can pick 'n' choose who from the Ahlulbayt you want to follow.

All or nothing (imho of course)

i don't know about the idealogical similarities but we from the maliki school of thought have jurisprudence similarities to shias : 1) We leave our hands by the sides. Which seems to be the major differentiating feature between sunnis and shias at an outlook. At maliki school,i beleive we give greater importance to the ahlul bayt, because we follow the ahlul-medina and the founder of the maliki school of thought was the student of Imam Jafar al sadiq (rah)

The Ibadi muslims don't fit in any category.

They believe in the first two caliphs as just but severely criticise Uthman, Muawiyah, Amr ibn al-aas etc.

What are their views about Imam Ali as considering that Ibadis are a mutation of the early khawarij?

Being a student is one thing. Following is another. A lot of people were students of the Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa aalihi. But, how many really followed him? You can gauge that through their levels of adherence to Hadith al-Thaqalayn.

Imam Malik was a student of Imam Ja'far, 'alaihi al-salam. But, in his various books, did he transmit the knowledgeable he had gained from Imam al-Sadiq, as other companions of the holy Imam did?

Of course, he did not.
