Sunni Chaplain On Muharram

Recommended Posts

This past Friday, Imam Khalid Latif at the Islamic Center of NYU shattered the sectarian paradigm surrounding the commemoration of Muharram in an incredible Jum'ah khutba last Friday, just before next week's Muharram in Manhattan program begins. Listen to the whole thing (~25 min) here, it's worth it: https://youtu.be/AjulCxXj-nk?t=10m

Excerpt: "I would encourage those of us who are not familiar with the tragedies that take place in the month of Muharram to take the time to go and understand and read our history. And that's a Muslim history, not a Sunni or a Shia history. And to be able to relate and connect to every character that is there and to understand really, what are they made of? That they were able to move forward in the face of such atrocity, in the face of such challenge, and still say that the next world is more important than this one. That Allah is greater than all of this. That I will not compromise on my relationship with the Divine for anything of this dunya. It's for you and I to take from, not from anybody else. It's for you and I to reflect on, to make the individual decision. And it starts in being honest with yourself. Do you really believe that honesty drives you? Do you believe that integrity drives you?... I would encourage that you engage and take in some capacity. Push your comfort zone, and not for anybody else's sake. Not to prove that you are somehow open-minded and you will be present in gatherings. Let this Muharram be about your heart... and yield to the idea that there is immense opportunity for gain and rejuvenation. We just have to decide whether it's something we want to take for ourselves or not."

Thank you for sharing an excerpt of the khutba and the video. I pray that he is protected from those who want disunity. May Allah, Endless is His Sovereignty, fill our minds as well as our hearts with devotion to the Ahlul Bayt AS, and reward us with recognition of truth.

Crocodile tears don't help you here, following Ahlul Bayt (as) will.

Many claim to follow Our Prophet s.a.w.a. and the Ahle Bayt a.s. few in actuality do.

I have come to know that their followers are the the soft hearted the well spoken, the merciful, the generous, the well mannered, the forgiving. They are mindful of God, and mention Him S.W.T. often. When they speak they imitate those they love a.s., and when they mention them a.s. the pause for a second or two. . They are proud yet speak, dress, and eat, modestly, they are brave, yet one sees them often tolerant. They are a people whose longing for their beloved a.s. have driven them to sorrow, but whose hope in Allah S.W.T. of reuniting with them a.s makes them think of death with joy.

I have found the ignorant to be the opposite. When they speak they are rude, they accuse and judge, do not learn nor are they willing to. When given something they frown at it in disdain, they subscribe piety to themselves and view the rest as misfits. They have no mercy nor are they shown any. They hold strong to their own sects and view other sects as worthy of the fire. They speak of bravery yet are the first to seek safety for themselves, they are arrogant and try to project it as Islamic pride. If the world has no interest in them, they dress themselves with the robe of zuhud and say they are abstaining from the "dunya" but if the dunya offers herself to them they instantly shed the robe of zuhud, and justify their lusts with texts.

The strange thing though in all this is that these type of muslims are to be found in all sects, shia and sunni, but the scariest thing is when a shia belongs to the second group. Afterall people are measured against their own knowledge.

Do YOU follow Ahlul Bayt correctly?

Look at yourself first.

Oh please, you really can't compare someone who believes in the full Wilayah of Ahlul Bayt upon the creation as a whole versus someone who says they love Ahlul bayt but when asked to follow them he says "the sahaba were closer to the Prophet".

Stop trying to fool yourself into thinking that somehow people who follow the Wilayah of Ahlul Bayt are at the same level as those who reject and mock the Wilayah.

My pleasure Sister Hameedeh---Subhanallah, this was the first time that I've heard a Sunni address Muharram and Imam Hussein like that in a Khutbah. May Allah (swt) answer your beautiful Duas, and may the Muslim Ummah be united in the face of our enemies. Ameen.

In the Subcontinent, traditional (Sufi or Barelvi) Sunnis have long commemorated the martyrdom of Imam e Ali Maqam (a.s.) every Muharram. Here is a majlis for Imam Hussain in chaste Urdu by Sayyid Muhammad Hashmi of India:
