Salaams brother and sisters,

Today is the first of Zil Haj, and 40 days left until Ahsura. If you want to give the best gift to your Imams, then start an act today and gift it to them on Ashura. IMHO the best gift you can start with is to start praying Salatul Layl/Tahajjud.

Look up any literature of Salatul Layl and you will be blown away by the special place this prayer holds... it's directly mentioned in the Quran, all the Imams have mentioned it... take any of the Urafa/elite men and women in history... they all unanimously agree that to gain anything spiritually one must be praying this prayer.

If you are not doing it... then start today! force yourself to do it.

I can tell you based on personal experience that this prayer has helped me spiritually more than any other act probably has.

Promise yourself you'll do it for 40 days... if you start today then 40 days will take you all the way to Ashura... and this can be your gift to Imam Hussain and Imam Mehdi

If 40 days seem too much... do 10 days and iA you'll complete the 40 voluntarily

If 11 rakats seems too much... start with 2.

If you can't get up in the middle of the night, which i can't, then do it before you sleep... the point is to start!

And please remember me in your prayers during these special nights and prayers :)

It's a volantary prayer... there are really no "musts" associated with it. The ideal time to pray is 30-60mins before Fajr, however it can be prayed at any time. Many people don't take up this prayer because they can't wake up in the middle of the night... however it can be done during the day or before you sleep, or whenever is most convenient. The full prayer is 11 rakats, however to start you can even do 2. There are really no excuses for why anyone is missing this prayer other than our own sins and laziness.

When i think about the days i didn't pray, i look at how much time i wasted on facebook and entertainment... if I had time for these than surely I could make time for salatul layl.

If you don't feel pleasure in prayer, just give it a try, pray salatul layl for 10-15 days straight and iA you will start experiencing some pleasure.

So just 2 rakats to start, with the niyyah of salatul layl and prayed like the fajr prayers?

Yes that's correct. This prayer is really a gift and honor for us... the more you do it the more you'll see the benefits in your life. Then the equation will be reversed and you'll be wanting to do it more and more.
