Quran 2:223

Can someone please give me the reason and tafseer behind this ayah:

نِسَآؤُكُمۡ حَرۡثٌ لَّـكُمۡ

فَاۡتُوۡا حَرۡثَكُمۡ اَنّٰى شِئۡتُمۡ

Your wives are your tilth; go, then, into your tilth as you wish

نساؤكم حرث لكم فأتوا حرثكم أنّى شئتم

 

“Your women are a tilth for you, so come unto your tilth as you wish” (2:223)

 

I have found two hadiths relating to this verse, both of which relate it to casual intercourse. Hurr al-`Amuli includes them in his chapters on rectal intercourse in Wasa'il ash-Shi`a. In the first hadith, a man asks Imam as-Sadiq (as) if it is permissible, and he says, "There is no problem [with it] if she has accepted" (لا بأس إذا رضيت). The verse is placed in contrast with the preceding 2:222, “So come to them from where Allah has commanded you”, which the Imam says is referring to child-seeking intercourse (هذا في طلب الولد) as opposed to casual intercourse.

 

In the second hadith, Imam as-Sadiq (as) relates the verse to vaginal intercourse. When asked about 2:223, he says, "[Enter] from in front of her and from behind from the front [part]" (من قدامها ومن خلفها في القبل). In some cultures, some "lustful" forms and positions of sex were discouraged or forbidden, but in our fiqh, relative freedom is given to a couple - so long that intercourse is not performed during periods, during fasting hours, or in front of others.

 

So there is an important fiqhi distinction between the two verses: 2:222 is a specific command to seek a child via vaginal intercourse (as opposed to any form of artificial insemination); and 2:223 allows us to seek pleasure from our wives in general.

 

As for the agricultural metaphor: a farmer can approach his land as he wishes. The allusion of women to fertile soil is an interesting one, because whatever seed you put into it, she will return it with something better for you. Be it the sperm that becomes a child, or kindness that is returned with love.

Another layer of interpretation in this metaphor can be found in the Arabic word for love (حب), which shares the same root as the word for seed/grain (حبة). If you plant a seed into your farm, it returns with trees, crops, plants, and fruit. Likewise, when love is planted in a woman, she returns with compassion, children, and rizq.

Which is also called the womb in English and رحم in Arabic and farsi.

The place where creation of Human takes shape .

If a woman was not compassionate she could never have achieved the level to carry حمل the creation within for 9 months.

Man could not achieve this state.

That is why a woman is a very special creature
