I'm Afraid Of Death

Salam Alaykoom.

- Death has been my biggest fear in life, i'm scared of loosing a loved one someday like my parents, & i'm afraid of dying myself, but i always wish death upon myself first, before my parents.

Thinking about death or hearing someone that have passed away, gives my life no meaning, i just keep thinking like what's the point of this, or the point of doing all those Dunya things ( Life things ) Dunya entertainments, when my time of death could be here at any time,

i get thoughts in my head, that i should just sit & cry my whole life & just worship Allah nonstop until the time of my death, so i don't do any life entertainment things, because i find them useless, but yet, i cant stop my self from not having fun, like laughing, taking pictures, going out & having fun & that all will lead you to thinking like you're living here for ever.

How can i help myself in this situation, either ways isn't good, if i chose to not do anything & just worship, or i don't know what's the proper word to use, but like cry, & pray, & ask for forgiveness from Allah non stop is not something someone can do their WHOLE life, or still chose to love life & do all those fun entertaining things, which will keep me away from Allah ( i feel like ), so i'm just stuck here, needing help.

Or what if i die & end up in Hell fire, Jahanam. Because i'm not yet that one perfect Muslimah Allah loves, shaaytan, always makes me feel worthless, & makes me feel like i'm a bad Muslimah.

Any Advice would be appreciated, i'm struggling so much.

Walaikumasalaam warahmatulahi wabarakatuh,

sister, it is not a bad thing that your afraid of death. It is also not a bad thing that your having fun. The only bad thing is when you sin! If you are sinning in having fun, then your in error but other than that its not bad to have fun. Allah created us with the feelings of boredness, repetitiveness, and thats why he made certain things like the day and night cycle, different climates, different seasons. We were made to have these feelings, so it is not haram to have fun, as long as it is in rightfulness. It is not bad to enjoy life, enjoy it when its enjoyable(just dont sin), and be patient when it is bad.

As soon as you feel like youve sinned, repent, Allah is quick to forgive and forgives ALL. If you have salaat/fasting that are not done and you die, and you were in a gradual process of finishing them, Allah will forgive them as if they were all complete. Just make sure you are actually making an effort to get them done and that you strive in the path of Allah, and even when your having fun remember the limits set by Allah. Allah is all knowing.

Also, what other way do we have to repent to Allah except begging and crying, like in dua kumayl we beg to Allah " And have mercy on him whose capital is hope, and his weapon is tears." Nonetheless, we do not have to always be crying and begging for forgiveness, even though its a good thing, as muslims we must grow, learn, work. We have to increase in our beings, and remember how much the prophet, and the Imams worked and studied yet they were of the greatest people to walk on the earth. There are many hadiths where the prophet and Imams have hailed those who study greatly!

Just the fact that you fear Allah's punishment, that is making you a better muslimah!

I also feel the same at times, I believe it is quite normal. The miraculous thing is, Allah swt with his infinite mercy has innately made us where we are not constantly thinking about death. Sure it comes in our minds, but quickly we tend to forget. I also believe remembering death once in a while is beautiful as well, as it is usually a wake up call or mercy as you remember there will be a judgement day to all this oppression around the world, and that all tyrants will fall. Wishing death upon yourself, isnt good, as if your parents heard you say this, they would probably cry of sadness. They are living for you, and want you to live. Wanting to die before them, wouldnt it be insulting to their love? I know it is tough, and understandable, but personally, when I remember this, I pray to Allah swt to keep all of the good beings alive, and to give my family and I a long and healthy life, and when times comes oh Allah swt, take us with ease and tranquility. IMO, that is much more beautiful, then wishing death upon yourself. Allah swt is here asking us to supplicate to Him so that we should die before our parents? No, pray for the long life of everyone. For death is only by the will of Allah, and no age can counter it.

Thinking about death gives no meaning to life because you have not yet realized the meaning of life AND the here after. Even our prophets and imams a.s have died. Were they not sad for their families deaths? They thought death to them was sweeter than honey. Why? Because this life is only temporary, and if you do good and uphold your religious duty, you will meet again and live for eternity with peace. Not only with your parents but with the blessed imams and prophets inshAllah! Think about it, eternity, subhanAllah.

No one says not to enjoy your time with your family and not to have fun, but do so in the scope of the religion and Allah. And do not act or do anything to regret or waste of your time in the world set for the true purpose in the hereafter. So improve and work on yourself. No one is saying to pray non stop all day either.

Remember, no one is perfect and being perfect is not our mission in this life. It is to STRIVE towards perfection, both in humanity and in religion. We make mistakes, regret and repent, and strive not to do them again. Dont play with religion, nor with your life. Realize that, understand that. Improve your God consciousness, and inshAllah everything will become clear.

(wasalam)

Thanks so much for this!! May Allah Bless you!

I don't get why people fear death.....

i don't get why people shouldn't fear death, Especially us Muslims, we know what's coming next, but it's also unknown on what's exactly going to happen to YOU personally, i can't guarantee i'm a 100% good Muslim to not fear it & not worry about what's going to happen

To be honest, my biggest concern with death is the power it gives to the feeling of absurdity in this life, and that is really terrifying.

There is no infallible shield against that feeling. And when it strikes a person, only God knows how far that person will go to escape the absurd. I loved the Myth of Sysyphus, if you are looking for an interesting philosophical read about this idea.

There is a difference between fear of death and fear of dying. I don't fear death as I know , InshaAllah, I will be in ecstasy worshipping Almighty God in heaven. I feel that it's understandable and human to fear dying as the manner of our death is so uncertain. We'd all like a quiet peaceful death surrounded by those who love us, however this is never guaranteed

I forgot to mention, I was referring to the book of Camus, not the myth itself although the book directly dedicates a whole chapter to it. I must warn you there are no words of hope nor faith, though that may also be the reason why I really love the author.

Some have said that inside Camus was a theist trying to get out

Heh, Camus would deserve a whole thread to be honest. But long stort short, he was clearly an atheist, loyal to his knowledge or non-knowledge. That didn't suppose any barrier to reach an excellent top notch humanism. I hope I at least reach a small percentage of the humanism he has shown.

Worshipping Allab 24/7 is not contrary to having entertainement. For example, is spending time with ur parents and making hem happy by laughing not worship?! Rather we need a filtering mechanism, muraqabah, in order to make all of our actions ibadah.

We can live a life where playing football, eating, sleeping, doing homework, saying hi to the neighbour are worship. we can do all our actions Allah-ly or Allah-lessly... if we choose the first then our life has meaning, if we choose the second then all of our deeds (maybe even, God forbid, our prayers) are futile and useless.

You can refer to this for more reading

And of course, we must not forget to give up hope from all but Allah... only he can make us perform perfect actions... we alone have 0 power...

Do remember me in your duas!

Rosaritaa, there's nothing to be afraid of. God is not a monster. He is Loving and Kind. Your emotional struggles with your flaws only reflect your sincerity and love to God. He Loves you too because you're a wonderful person.

God bless your heart

(Salam)

I think if you live your life to the fullest then you'll never fear death. Think about everything that you need to achieve, your goals and commitments. Focus on those and work on them. Perhaps you are scared of death because you haven't yet fulfill your mission in life.
