I Have Changed My Mind About Japan After Reading..

When you watch their films, you think they are humble, kind, generous, polite, ... but after reading about the massacre of Chinese people by Japanese soldiers during 1930s.... It was terrible!

I know that I should not generalize. Bur the soldiers were not from another planet! They were from the same country (however, I am not sure if they were supported by their people or not).

Now, I cant understand why some people are so cruel!

Were the Japanese such violent and merciless?!

When you read the history, you see that it is full of massacres, genocides, invasions, .... and in most of them, women and children were assaulted and cruelly treated! But why?! Does it mean that men dont (cant or dont want to) control themselves when there is no law, no punishment, ...?

And if they control themselves. do they it because they are afriad of being punished or afraid of God and hell or because they dont want to show a bad image of themselves and not for humanitarian reasons??!!!

The US and the Allies did not prosecute anyone in Unit 731 after the War.

The rise of Japanese militarism (and what necessarily came before to precipitate it) is a study in extremism and how it gets started. Mush different than in Germany, Latin America, or Lenin-Stalinism.

Well if you look at Japan itself, it has always been a cruel place.

Even the Shogunate system was unjust on the peasants, it made them slaves of the state.

Then you had the Samurai, in Tokugawa's law, a Samurai could kill a peasant and he could just walk away no questions asked.

Their whole history and life was based around the warrior and war, when there was no fighting the Samurai would suffer, so they would always have to have wars in which people suffer, women are raped, children are killed and the helpless is oppressed.

Remember the Japanese treatment of the Chinese people in the Nanking massacre stems from nationalistic pride, expansionist policies, imperialism and the idea that the Japanese were a purified race; They believed that they were all descendants of the Emperor, and he in turn was descended from Amaterasu, the sun goddess as according to the Shinto religion which was the state religion of Imperial Japan. So they were serious when they said that they were "children of the sun". Plus, Japan had been pursuing a policy of island hopping and after the success that they had, started pushing inwards towards the Mainland China; I suspect that the Japanese never forgot about Chinese stopping the Japanese attempt to invade Korea twice in 1592-1598 (Imjin War) and with the nationalistic wartime policies, all the events were like the ingredients of a perfect storm which manifested into the events of the Nanking massacre.

Now, the Japanese government still downplays it's historical role in Nanking and mainly because of image, Japan is a "shame society" and very image-oriented. Not to mention the situation was worsened because Chinese have very poor records of the population before and after the massacre, in addition to delibrate distorion of facts by the Chinese communists under Mao.

Even if they were racist, why did their racial attitudes make them such cruel even to defenseless women and children?! This is what I cant understand! And Japanese soldiers were not the only people who committed such crimes. During the history, it occurred and repeated too many times! I mean that I cannot understand why do such crimes occur when a group of people invade another country!

I really wish the whole story was fabricated!

"In their hearts is a sickness. So Allah has increased them in sickness, and for them is a painful torment for (that) they used to lie."(2:10)

It is the evil and hate in men which leads to crimes like the Nanking massacre, Iblis loves it when women and children are killed in cold blood...

Furthermore, their racist attitudes were because they believed that they (Japanese) believed that they were the superior race which made them view the people of Nanking like they were cattle or dirt.

Salaam everyone,

My late grandfather (may Allah be well pleased with him) was a decorated World War II veteran who fought the Japanese in the Pacific (Eniwetok). His description of their brutality against civilians just boggled my mind; to say that the Japs behaved like animals would be a gross insult to animals everywhere...

Salaam,

Sorry for the slow response! He was actually a tank driver in the Army. I remember him telling me that the Japanese would cut the tongues out of anyone who failed to tell them what they wanted to hear during interrogations (only after enduring unspeakably sadistic torture) and also had a penchant for eating bits of their victims. After American troops came across the dismembered corpses of some Army nurses that clearly showed signs of torture and cannibalism, they were given specific instructions to take no prisoners and show no mercy; orders which they fulfilled quite successfully, I might add...

I inherited a Japanese officers' "rising sun" battle flag my grandfather took as a trophy, complete with splattered blood and .30 caliber bullet holes. He also received a Purple Heart  for saving another tank drivers' life, but not before getting shot in the leg himself. As you might imagine, he also received permanent hearing damage from his time in the service.

I salute your grandfather may God rest his soul in peace and grant him eternal bliss

I think most japanease war criminals escaped justice after WW2

But I'm so glad the marines took no prisoners , thanks for sharing that it gives me some relief that justice was served.

My recently (couple of years) deceased uncle had a half page Navy article in his home town news paper with "never a dull moment" in the title. He is also one of the posted names in Chicago -Tech Museum- on the capture of U-505.

He was later sent to Pacific as an airman. They were flying when the Tokotai (vernacular: Kamikaze) were going in at Okinawa.

What horrified him was the bombing runs on the main islands. The militarist-extremist nutcases had this policy that when the air raid sirens went off, all the locals were to go to the bases "to help defend" them. So on their first run, his plane would drop everything and empty every weapon. But not all the planes would do this and many planes would "lay back". By the time the formations came around a second time over the target base, the roads and areas would be clogged with women, children and old people. Then the planes still with munitions would blow them all up. He said, except for the napalm on the wooden docks, the bombing runs had little military effect.
