This is a question by a member who wishes to remain anonymous.

This is a Math problem that I always run into. Always. If I know a quantity and want to reduce it, I cannot figure it out. For example, if I know that 1/3 cup of a food is worth 240 calories, if I eat 1/4 cup of the food instead, how many calories did I eat? :unsure: Please tell me how many calories, and please also tell me how to solve the problem so that I can do it at all times! I don't want to come to this topic every day and ask a new question. ;)

This is my solution:

Make common denominators:

1/3=4/12

1/4=3/12

240=4/12

240/4=60 which means that 1/12 of a cup is 60 calories

to find 1/4 of a cup which is 3/12 of a cup we just multiply

60*3=180 calories

If you have any questions, please ask.

If you have a calculator that can solve for X then you can use the magical methods of Algebra :D (which comes from Iraq #Proud)

(1/3)*X=240

X=720

(1/4)*720=180

(salam)

This is is how I figure it out.

If you know the initial fraction(1/3), then multiply its caloric value(240) with the denominator of your fraction(3). Therefore you have something like this: 3*240=720..

Now you know what 1 full cup is worth. Then simply divide it by 4 to know what 1/4 of the cup is worth.

Therefore,

720/4=180!

General instructions=figure out what 1 cup holds, then divide your answer by the denominator of the new fraction.

assuming u arent a mathematician and just want an easy way to calculate it everytime.

start with 1/3 = 240

so you multiply 240 with bottom number (3) = 720

you then divide by top number (1) so stays same ie. 720

take 720 divide by bottom number of required (4) = 180

then multiply by top (1) =180 calories

Since you are probably not familiar with math, since this is a very basic operation, I'll try to use as less of mathematical language and as much of plain English as possible.

Simply put:

First, find the number of calories in one cup. Which is as easy as:

Number of calories per cup = Total Number of Calories/Total Number of Cups.

You have 1/3 of a cup and 240 calories.

So,

Number of Calories per cup = 240 divided by 1/3 = 240*3 = 720

(If you're unsure about how I went from 240 divided by 1/3 to 240*3, just use a calculator and you'll use it's true.)

So, in one cup, there are 720 calories. If you had 2 cups, to find the number of calories you had, you would multiply by two. If you had ten cups, you'd multiply by ten. In this case, you have 1/4 of a cup.

Therefore,

Number of calories in 1/4 cups = 720*(1/4) = 720/4 = 180.
