`Ali b. Ibrahim from his father from an-Nadr b. Suwayd from Hisham b. al-Hakam.

He asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the names of Allah and their derivations: Where is “Allah” derived from? He said: So he said to me: O Hisham, “Allah” is derived from “god” (ilah) and “the god” (al-ilah), that which has a servant (yaqtadi ma’looha). And a name is different from what is described; for whoever worships the name without the meaning has disbelieved and has worshiped nothing. And whoever worships the name and the meaning has disbelieved and has worshiped two things. Whoever worships the meaning without the name – that is monotheism (tawhid). Have you understood, O Hisham? He said: So I said: [Explain] further for me. He said: For Allah there are ninety-nine names; so if each name were a described thing, then each name from it would be a deity. However, Allah is the meaning that these names are indicative to, and they are all something other than Him. O Hisham, “bread” is the name of an edible, “water” is the name of a beverage, “cloth” is the name of what is worn, and “fire” is the name of what burns. Have you understood, O Hisham, with a comprehension that, by which, you can defend [our cause], and struggle against our enemies and those who have taken up [a deity] besides Allah عزوجل? So I said: Yes. He said: So he said: May Allah avail you by it and make you steadfast, O Hisham.

Hisham said: By Allah, no one has overcome me in monotheism (tawhid) till this position I stand at (i.e. till this day). (al-Kafi, Volume 1, hadith 306)

Death of Ignorance or Mushrik???

From Sulaym ibn Qays al Hilali said;

"He (Sulaym) heard a hadith from Salman, Abu Dhar, and Miqdad who heard it from the Holy Prophet (saww) that He said: "Whoever dies and does not have an Imam, then he has died the death of ignorance"

Then he (Sulaym) presented this hadith to Jabir and ibn Abbas. Both of them said: "They all said correctly and truthfully. We were present at the time and we have heard this hadith from the Holy Prophet (saww). And verily Salman said: "O Messenger of Allah, you said whoever dies without an Imam dies as an infidel. O Messenger of Allah, who is this Imam?” The Prophet (saww) said: "They are my Wasi (successors), So who ever dies from my Ummah and has no Imam whom he knows, he has died the death of ignorance, and if he is ignorant of the Imam and bears enmity with the Imam, then he is an idol worshipper (Mushrik). And if he is ignorant of the Imam and does not have enmity with the Imam and does not befriend the enemy of the Imam then he then he is ignorant but not idol worshiper."

Kitab Al Kafi - Obidience and piety

H 1610, CH 32, h 2

A number of our people have narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from ibn

Fadal from ‘Asim ibn Humayd from abu Hamza al-Thumali from abu Ja’far,

recipient of divine supreme covenant, who has said the following:

“The Messenger of Allah addressed the people during his farewell (last) visit to Makka, ‘O people, I swear by Allah, everything that can take you closer to paradise and farther away from hell I have commanded you all to follow. Everything that may take you closer to hell and farther away from paradise I have prohibited you to do. You must know that the trusted spirit has inspired me that no soul dies before his supply of sustenance is completely exhausted. Be pious before Allah and do your best in search of means of sustenance. Do not allow laziness to overcome you in your search to make a living, or lead you to make a living through improper means; nothing is achievable from what is with Allah except through obedience to Him.’”

Ahmad b. Idris from Muhammad b. `Abd al-Jabbar from Safwan b. Yahya from al-Fadl b. `Uthman from ibn Abi Ya`foor.

He said: I asked Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام about the saying of Allah عز وجل, “He is the First and the Last” (57:3). And I said: As for [the meaning of] “the First”, we know it; but as for “the Last” – elucidate its interpretation for us.

So he said: It is that there is no thing except that it can perish or be changed; or be susceptible to alteration or disappearance; or shift from one colour to another and from one shape to another and from one quality to another; or from abundant to lacking and from lacking to abundant – except for the Lord of the worlds; for He is unceasing and unhalting in His solitary state. He is the First before all things, and He is the Last and does not cease. [His] qualities and His names do not change as they change for other than Him; like the humans who were dust at a time, and flesh and blood at a time, and corpses and powder at a time – and like a date that was raw at a time, and ripe at a time, and dry at a time, and then a date. Its names and qualities change, and Allah عز وجل is different from that. (al-Kafi, Volume 1, hadith 309)

And also, a Shi'a version.

Abī ‘Umayr – ‘Abd Allāh b. Sinān – Ma’rūf b. Kharbūz – Abū al-Ṭufayl ‘Āmir b. Wāthilah – Ḥudhayfah b. Usayd al-Ghiffārī:

When the Messenger of Allāh, peace be upon him and his family, returned from the Farewell Pilgrimage, and we were with him until he reached al-Juḥfah, and ordered his companions to camp. So, the people camped. Then he called for alāt, and prayed two rak’ahs with his companions. Then he turned his face to them and said to them: “I have been informed by the All-Benevolent All-Knowing that I will die, and you too will die. And it is as if I have been called (into the presence of my Lord) and I have answered. I will be asked about what I have been sent with to you, and about what I have left behind among you, the Book of Allāh AND ITS UJJAH, and you too will be asked. What will you say in reply to your Lord?” They said, “You have conveyed the message, and you have directed (to the right path), and you have made jihād. May Allāh reward you, from us, the best of rewards.”

Then he said, “Do you not testify that there is no god but Allāh and that I am the Messenger of Allāh to you and that the Paradise is true? And that Hellfire is true? And that the resurrection after death is true?” They said, “We testify to that”. He said, “O Allāh! Bear witness to what they are saying. And I make you my witnesses that I testify that Allāh is Mawlā, and I am the mawlā of every Muslim, and that I have more authority over the believers than themselves. Do you accept this with me, and testify for me with it?” They said, “Yes, we testify for you with it.”

So, he said, “Verily, whosoever I am his mawlā, verily ‘Alī is his mawlā, and it is this one”. Then he heard the hand of ‘Alī, peace be upon him, and raised it high with his hand until their armpits were visible. Then he said, “O Allāh, be the friend of whosoever is his friend, and be the enemy of whosoever is hostile to him. Help whosoever helps him and abandon whosoever abandons him. Verily, I will be your predecessor (at the Lake-Font), and you will be brought to me at the Lake-Font, my Lake-Font, tomorrow, and it is a Lake-Font whose width is of the distance between Basra (in Iraq) and Sana’a (in Yemen). In it are glasses of silver, the number of the stars in the sky. Verily, I will ask you tomorrow what you did concerning that which I asked Allāh to testify about against you in this day of yours when you are brought to my Lake-Font, and verily I will ask you, when you meet me, about what you have done with the Two Weighty Things (al-Thaqalayn) after me. Therefore, watch carefully how you treat them both in my absence.

They said, “What are these Two Weighty Things, O Messenger of Allāh?”

He replied, “As for the Bigger Weighty Thing, it is the Book of Allāh, a rope stretching from Allāh and from me, in your hands, one end of it is in the Hand of Allāh and the other end is in your hands. In it is knowledge of what had passed, and what will pass till the Hour. As for the Smaller Weighty Thing, it is THE PAIR OF THE QUR’ĀN and that is ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib and his bloodline, peace be upon him. Both (Weighty Things) shall NEVER separate from each other until they meet me at the Lake-Font.”

Ma’rūf b. Kharbūz said: “I presented this statement to Abū Ja’far, peace be upon him, and he replied, ‘Abū al-Ṭufayl, may Allāh be merciful to him, spoke the truth. We find this statement in the Book of ‘Alī, peace be upon him, and we recognize it.”

He said: I said to Abu `Abdillah عليه السلام: I heard Hisham b. al-Hakam narrate from you that Allah has a body, supported by light, His recognition is necessary and He bestows this [knowledge] upon whom He wills from the creation. So he عليه السلام said: Glorified be He, whom no one knows how He is except Himself. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. He cannot be limited, nor can He be felt, nor can He be moved, nor can He be comprehended [by sight, nor by] the senses, nor can He be contained in anything, nor does He have a body, nor does He have a form, nor a figure, nor a confine. (al-Kafi, Volume 1, hadith 278)

Do not seek help or protection from anybody but Allah. Reserve your prayers, your requests, your solicitations, your supplications, and your entreaties to Him and Him alone because to grant, to give, to confer and to bestow, as well as to withhold, to deprive, to refuse, and to debar, lies only in His Power. Ask as much of His Blessings and seek as much of His Guidance as you can.

Nahjul Balagah Letter 31- in his will to Imam Hassan a.s

Imam Jafar e Sadiq (a.s.) said to Maisar“ O Maisar! Offer prayer to Allah and don’t say that what is destined will happen. You should remember that Allah has absolute control over the destinies and supplication can change the fate of persons.”

Imam Mohammed Baqir (a.s.) said, “ The best prayer is supplication and the worst enemy of Allah is a person who, in his pride, refuses to do supplication and invocation. To the contrary one who supplicates to Allah with due humility will get his prayers answered. It is like the door opening for a person who keeps knocking at it!

From Yāsir, the servant, said, I said to al-Riḍā  a.s

‘What do you say about al-Tafwīd?’ And he said: ‘Allāh  delegated (fawwaḍa) to His prophet affairs of His religion’, and He said: “Take whatever the Messenger gives to you, and deny for yourself whatever he prohibits” (59:7). As for (delegating) the creation and sustenance, then No! He said: ‘Allāh says “Allāh is the creator of all things’ (3:16) and He says “It is Allāh, He has created you, then He has given you sustenance, then He has made you die, then He has brought you back to life, are there any of your partners who can does of that any of these things? Glory be to Allāh, and High is He from the partners (they attribute)” (30:40)

Several of our companions from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from Muhammad b. `Isa from Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman from al-Hasan b. as-Sari from Jabir b. Yazeed al-Ju`fi.

He said: I asked Abu Ja`far عليه السلام something about monotheism (tawhid), so he said: Allah, whose names are holy and by them He is called, is exalted by His being. He is one; united solitarily in His oneness. He then made His creatures and thus He is one, self-sufficient (samad), and holy. He is worshiped by all things, and all things depend on Him. His knowledge expands over all things. (al-Kafi, Volume 1, hadith 320)

`Ali b. Muhammad and Muhammad b. al-Hasan from Sahl b. Ziyad. And Muhammad b. Yahya from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. `Isa together from Abu Hisham al-Ja`fari.

He said: I asked Abu Ja`far the Second عليه السلام: What is the meaning of “the One”? So he said: The unanimity of all tongues upon oneness, like His تعالى saying, “And if you asked them, ‘Who created you?’ they would say, ‘Allah’” (43:87). (al-Kafi, Volume 1, hadith 316)

Assalamu'aleikum wb.

A narration from Imam Jaffar Al-Sadiq (as) which is cited in 'al-Kafi' says that one of his companions asked whether a believer may become discontented when his soul is being taken. He (s) replied:

"By Allah, No! When the angel of death comes to take his soul the believer shows restlessness and the angel says: 'O, Lover of Allah! Be not upset! By He Who has appointed Mohammad (s) to prophethood, I am more sympathetic to you than a kind father. Look carefully!' He looks carefully and sees Prophet Mohammad, Amir -al- Mo'mineen Ali, Fatimah, Hasan, Husain and other Imams from their descendants [as]

The angel tells him to look and see that they [as] are all his friends. He opens his eyes and watches. A caller from Almighty Allah suddenly beckons and says:"O, you serene soul! Come back to your Lord well-pleased (with Him) and well-pleasing (Him) . So enter among My servants. And enter into My Garden ". At that moment there is nothing better and more beloved than that his soul separates from his body as soon as possible and moves unto his Lord.

"O Allah, surely You have bestowed favors upon me by giving me the opportunity of visiting my master Amir al-Momineen (as) and by his Wilayah and by his Ma'arifah (knowing Him). Then include me from those who help him and seek help from him."

532. Hamdawayh who said: narrated to us Ya’qub from Ibn Abi Umayr from Shuayb from Abi Basir who said: I said to Abi Abdillah عليه السلام – they do say, he said: and what do they say? I said: they say that you know the number of the drops in the rain, and the number of the stars, and the number of leaves in all the trees, and the weight of what is in the ocean, and the number of sand particles, so he عليه السلام raised his hand to the sky and said: praise be to Allah, praise be to Allah, no by Allah, no one knows this except for Allah.

Tawheed without Wilayah??

From him, from Ibn Bint Ilyas, from Ahmad Bin A'iz, from Abu Al Hassan Al Sawaaq, from Aban Bin Taghlub,

From Abu Abdullah Imam Sadiq (as) having said; " Aban! When you proceed to Al-Kufa, so report this Hadeeth, "The one who testifies sincerely that 'there is no god except for Allah", then Paradise would be Obligatory upon him."

He (Aban) said, "I said to Him, "There come to me every type (of people) so should I report to all of them this Hadeeth?"

Imam (as) said: "Yes, O Aban! When it will be the Day of Judgement, and Allah Gathers together the former ones and the later ones, He will take away from them, 'There is no god except for Allah', except from the ones who are upon this matter (Wilayah of AhlulBait (as))."

Shia's and the fire of Hell ..

Amir al-Momineen (as) said, "When those who believe in our Wilayah come over the Siraat, a caller will call, "O Fire, Cool down". Then the Fire will say, "Cross over fast, Your Noor (light) is extinguishing my flames."

From Nahjul Balagha, Sermon 94:

May Allah shower His mercy on you! Do act according to the clear signs, because the way is straight and leads to the house of safety while you are in the place of seeking Allah's favour, and have time and opportunity. The books (of your doings) are open and pens (of angels) are busy (to record your actions) while your bodies are healthy, tongues are free, repentance is accepted and deeds are accorded recognition.
