(salam)

Around a year ago, I was given an amulet with Quranic verses written on it as a gift. 3 months ago, I started wearing it and since then, more than once have I encountered people who told me that this was haram and bid'a.

Is this true or not? I recall reading hadiths where people were advised to tie Quranic verses around their arms and such. (not sure whether these hadiths were from Prophet Mohammed (pbuh).

Ws,

Given what you said, about it being Quranic verses, it's said to be permissible. We have ahadeeth from Ahlul Bayt [as] allowing it. Even Sunni ahadeeth mention permissibility of the Taweedh, amulets, talisman, etc. in Malik's Muwatta, I think in Chapter 50.

Since the rulings are that you must not touch the name of Allah (SWT) in a state of impurity, if you are wearing an amulet with Quranic Verses (obviously in direct contact with your skin), you will need to observe strict discipline.

No, it is not haram to wear Amulet, except that it contain other than Quranic Verse ,Dua or Dhikr of Allah, we have whole chapter in our book Wasaa'il Al-Shi'a called "Permissiblity of Al-Ta'weedh that hangs (that contain words) from the Al-Qur'aan and Al-Dhikr and Al-Du'aa"

Here are few hadeeth from our book which I am quoting from Brother Nader Zaveri's Post

Partial Rough Translation:A guy asked about charms (al-ruqya). Muhammad Al-Baaqir  said: No, except from the Qur'aan. Verily, Ali  said: Verily, most of the charms (al-ruqya) and amulets (Al-Tamaa-im) are traps/shirk.

I wouldn't  call it haram but I understand why people would tell you it is. Do you enter the bathroom with it? I'd avoid wearing it for that simple reason. You don't enter the bathroom to do option A or B while holding the Quran.

Firstly Bida'a is ascribing something to religion precisely while you know it is not a religious part or doubt it. Therefor if you use the amulet without any certainty but rather based on the hope that it might bring you some blessings it would be OK to use it

Secondly if the amulet contains any Quranic verse or names of Allah or prophet or Imams and it is in direct touch with your skin you have to avoid using it unless you have Wudu at the same time.(It is important to note that if a woman uses it she has to keep it away from her skin while she is in her monthly period)
