To paraphrase the Sufis: Our affair is a matter of taste!

 

So yeah, I think God is a must for any meaningful thing to happen in our lives.

But how does that absolute faith in God make you feel?  Is it just neutral without any particular effect?

I was born a Muslim, then had no faith and then now I have absolute faith, actually best I can, I have realized the truth, so I don't give any way for disbelief since I know all other arguments are just rubbish lies conjured by humans, I still get tricked by atheist arguments and so I refrain from anything which causes doubt simply because I don't have time to think or discuss religious philosophy. If I had time to, I would say bring on the arguments.

It makes me feel weak and incompetent -  an absolute nobody, who owes everything to God.

 

I do not have anything to boast of my own.    Everything I have comes from God.   

 

If I am strong, it is because God gave me strength.

If I am smart, it is because God made me smart.

If I am loved by people, it is not because of my self.

Anything and everything I have comes from God.

I have nothing that belongs to me except my sins.

No, it  comes with a lot of humility and feelings of self-deprecation. 

It teaches me that I am nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing.

Whatever "awesome" might mean in the dictionary, I would never use it in speaking about God. 

 

English is not my native tongue, but I have not seen the word being used for God or for someone you greatly respect.

 

Depending on the vein of the conversation, I could say that my father is awesome but in general, it would be better to use a more "respectful" word.

English is not my native tongue, but I have not seen the word being used for God or for someone you greatly respect.

 

Depending on the vein of the conversation, I could say that my father is awesome but in general, it would be better to use a more "respectful" word.   

Because language tends to deteriorate it shouldn't surprise us if people today usually use the word "awesome" inappropriately.   But among the educated (even of today) there is an understanding on what the word "awesome" really means and an agreement of its usage for the Divine.

I have come across this expression used for God many times to the point that I find the word "awesome" most suitable when talking about God as Jalal (Majestic, Awe-Inspiring, Awe-some).  It is the most beautiful and most appropriate in my opinion.  Which is why it comes natural to me and why I specifically used that word at the beginning.  So I would in fact encourage you to use the word in that context from now and I would encourage you to encourage others to do that because it is in fact the right way of speaking about God.  We should also be aware of using the word "awesome" incorrectly because now we know what the word was originally used for.  The origin of all language is divine/sacred and so we should try our best to preserve it, inshallah.

I don't think I used any word inappropriately.

And after the holidays, I might try to get in touch with one of the professors in the University English department and see what he has to say.

There is a song "God is awesome" and the expression could be used informally.  But I agree that in formal English, it is not used.

To me, awesome has an enthusiasm that reaches toward the highest, the ultimate. I've heard many Christians say My God is an awesome God or Our God is an awesome God. It seems normal for me, but for some people it might seem similar to the British saying Brilliant or Brill.

Christian terminology is quite different from Islamic. But there is no Arabic word describing God in our scriptures that has ever been translated as "awesome".

Jalal can and has been translated as Awesome.

 

When you stand in front of big mountain you are in awe because it is so imposing and majestic that it is, literally, awesome.   In the same way we say God is Awesome because of His Jalali qualities.
