London council removes 'unacceptable' Stamford Hill posters telling women which side of the road to walk down

A London council has removed “unacceptable” posters instructing women which side of the road they should walk down.

The signs, which have "Women should please walk along this side of the road only" written in both Hebrew and English, were spotted along Stamford Hill in Hackney.

The Shomrim group, whose Jewish volunteers support policing in the area, said they were put up by an orthodox Jewish group during the Torah Procession earlier this week, in order to prevent men and women from the religious sect who are not married or related from touching.

Chaim Hochhauser, from the Stamford Hill Shomrim group, said it had contacted the organisers to inform them the posters "lacked explanation".

He told the Hackney Gazette the request was intended for people from the the Orthodox Jewish community who were attending the street event.

Mr Hochhauser said: “Shomrim have since contacted the event organisers, and explained that these posters lacked explanation in the English text, and therefore could have offended people who don’t understand the Hebrew wording and the logo.”

Stamford Hill is home to over 20,000 Haredi Jews, the third largest group.

Rosemary Sales, a councillor for Stamford Hill West, described the posters as “unacceptable” and said they had been taken down.

"Several residents in my ward in Stamford Hill have drawn these posters to my attention,” she told the Evening Standard.

"It is of course quite unacceptable to try to restrict women's movements in a public place and council officers removed these posters as soon as it was reported to them."

Hackney Police Superintendent Andy Walker said he had spoken to the organisers about the “potential misinterpretation” of the signs.

A spokesperson for Hackney Council told The Independent the posters were removed after they were raised by the ward councillor.

A superintendent from Hackney police said the organisers had agreed to display Hebrew-only posters next year, and remove them more quickly after the event.

Walking on different sides of the street may offend Western sensibilities, but gender separation is something that exercises the minds of even the most liberal institutions.

This week also sees reports that the BBC has banned its glamorous female Russian dancer from partnering married male stars, on its dancing competition. She has been linked to too many failed marriages amongst previous male partners.

I think this gives lie to the idea that modern men and women have evolved to such an extent that we can forget about gender separation.

Walking on different side of the road in ordinary circumstances is not only impractical it is insane. If I am walking with my wife and daughter I want to be able to walk with them on the same side of the road.

If you meet/approach members of the other gender with an intention to 'pick' them, then no amount of gender segregation is going to make a difference in your attitude. All you need is a chance, which is where some level of segregation comes handy because many people have nobly avoided sins because they had never had a chance for it.

I disagree that it's insane but yeah it's pretty impractical even in Islamic countries.

At least no one can say it's just Muslims in London who are extreme.

Haredim are known for their extreme, anti-women views but since there is no Judeophobia no one makes much fuss about this. And had Muslims been behind it, the press would have run long features about the dangers of extremism and lack of integration.

As a non-Haredi Jew, I can confirm there is much disgust in Judaism with the Haredi community. Failed Messiah (http://failedmessiah.typepad.com/) is the gathering place for ex-Haredi.

Some of them are remarkably similar to Wahhabis. Enough said.

I suppose every faith, and every community, has to put up with something.
