Is Not Giving Back Extra Change Stealing?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

salam.

I'm sure some of you may have experienced a time when you are at some store/ restaurant and the cashier accidentally gives you extra change, maybe a few dollars, or a 10 or 20 dollar bill extra. its happened to me before a number of times.

who has had this happen to them? what did you do? give the money back or keep it?

also, most importantly, whats the religious ruling regarding this situation, is it considered stealing if you don't let the cashier know and not give it back. or is it waved off as "it wasn't your fault, it was the cashier's mistake" and that you are allowed to keep the money?

Islamicly, In this case its obviously its not allowed to use that money and you must return it.

If you returned the money and then the cashier gave it to you , then its halal or else its like you have somebody's money without their permission, however if its their fault

Salam,

Usually they give me the right amount or less money, lol. I would give the money back a) because its not mine and I dont need it, b because when she cashs up she will find money missing. If your aware that she give you extra money then its a duty to return the money back.

You dont need science to know that, lol.

If you notice it, return it. To intentionally keep it is stealing. If returning it is impossible for whatever reason, donate it.

hmmm. i ask because i was told by a few people that if you are given extra money you can keep it because "it was their fault". i guess they were idiots, but i give it back anyway bc the cashiers end up being responsible for the money missing, it'd be pretty messed up
