Pretty sure keeping a pet pig would be discouraged. Keeping a pet dog has some issues with najisat too, and should be done with caution.

But I highly recommend cats. They can bring immense joy to a persons life. I have 2 and they are the most amazing creatures ever. They are like my children and provide me comfort in the darkest of times.

How do you know?

Well, to my knowledge the only mustahab action with regards to "pets" is the sport of horse riding. I didn't think the O.P. was asking about keeping a horse for a pet. But maybe he has the ability to do so ...

Are there any (other) mustahab pets per your knowledge?

Salam alaikum, I've heard dogs aren't allowed as pets for a muslim but the companions of the cave had one which makes me think it's maybe permissible? I had a boxer dog till recently when I gave it to my mother, she had 2 boxers before but one sadly was run over by a car :( dogs are always fun to keep and very loyal too.

As far as I know, dogs are allowed to be kept as pets. Just not in the house (precaution). Also, they are najis so you have to wash your hands everytime you touch them before you pray.

unfortunately poodles are victims of human fidgeting with selective breeding and they have made dogs smaller than cats, which is why it is haram to alter Allah's creations. 

 

Natural dogs look like wolves and they are big, I saw wild dogs in Afghanistan and they can hunt men easily, very scary, poodles poor them, they can't even defend themselves from a fat cat!

I have been thinking about getting a cat, but again there is so najast issues like if there is cat hair on your clothes or body your prayer wont be accepted. 

I have once heard that keeping a turtle as a pet brings rizk (sustenance). I have also considered pigeons, but they are too big and i live in a small apartment.

As for keeping a cat at home:

- Imam Ali al-Reza (as):

لا ینبغی ان یخلو بیت احدکم من ثلاثه و هن عمار البیت: الهره و الحمام و الدیک

'It behooves all to have one of the following pets as they are blessings for houses: cat or  pigeon or rooster. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 73 p. 163).

- Our beloved Prophet has been quoted as saying:

َ رَأَيْتُ فِي النَّارِ صَاحِبَةَ الْهِرَّةِ تَنْهَشُهَا مُقْبِلَةً وَ مُدْبِرَةً كَانَتْ أَوْثَقَتْهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ تُطْعِمُهَا وَ لَمْ تُرْسِلْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ حِشَاشِ الْأَرْض‏

(Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 73, p. 351).

 

"On the night of Mi'raj (ascendance) ... I saw a lady whose cat was biting her from each side since she, while in the world, used to confine it. She neither fed it not leave it to find food".

Some doves are smallish and can be kept fairly comfortably in a roomy cage - like diamond doves.

I posted that because I had seen the same members say similar things in other places. I.e. making absolute statements without evidence. Some of those statements are very likely to be wrong. I removed it because I didn't make that intention clear.

 

Given that there are so many ahadith on so many subjects, how can you make say 'no' unless you have studied the subject? I didn't say 'yes', so the burden of proof isn't on me.

Imam Ali (as) has been quoted as saying:

 

ع بَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص يَتَوَضَّأُ إِذْ لَاذَ بِهِ هِرُّ الْبَيْتِ وَ عَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص أَنَّهُ عَطْشَانُ فَأَصْغَى إِلَيْهِ الْإِنَاءَ حَتَّى شَرِبَ مِنْهُ الْهِرُّ وَ تَوَضَّأَ بِفَضْلِهِ
 

"The Prophet was performing ablution. Meanwhile a cat came toward him and the Prophet realized that it is thirsty. So he stopped performing ablution and put the dish of water in front of the cat. Then using the remaining water, he preformed his ablution ".

(Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 16 p. 293).

^ kindness to animals is a basic requirement for every human. That is not the same as keeping a pet.

I'm not sure about the halal issue, it's just better to get your pets from shelters for the sake of humanity. breeders are only concerned about their profits and are largely known to keep their animals in really bad conditions. so just as a way of discouraging breeders, get whatever pet you want from a shelter.

If you want a particular breed for some reason, call around to various shelters. I'm on the email list for a shelter that does rescues, and sometimes they've rescued animals from breeders and have a lot of females and puppies of certain breeds.

There are reasons to prefer particular breeds, but in general mutts are healthier. Pure bred dogs tend to have genetic conditions due to inbreeding.

Additionally, if you keep a dog indoors, you will need to take extra precautions about the animal being najis.

Shelters in the country of my residence do not accept fulltime workers as candidates :(

I don't want to adopt dogs- too dependent, too pricey, too dirty and najis. I still find some cute, e.g. toy (teacup) poodle.

I was just curious. A sunni friend of mine owns a husky and a shia friend of a friend owns a small dachshund, so I wanted to know whether buying from breeders and whether toy breeds were halal.
