I think dogs can be purchased only to be guards . Like keeping one in farm or workshop or other properties that needs protection. As for houses that are not in need of protection, you need to check with your marje

I'm surprised no one mentioned goats. the topic of the forum was recommended pets. goats are the only recommended pet in Islam, with a saying confirming unique blessings for the one who keeps one, two, or three goats. tuhaf ul uqoul. wasted love? animals are inherently innocent creations of Allah (unless u believe in the less-subscribed-to incarnate/conversion theory; even then, just a fraction are those animals). also, wise answer on keeping dogs as pets. most non-Shia and even many Shia selectively quote this hadith and that hadith when they're eager to justify villifying or killing dogs and quickly forget that this view doesn't carry the same sentiment in Qur'an. sure dogs are najis but what isn't. stay clean and make effort that even inherently najis things should be kept superficially clean, even if spiritually doing so is hopeful at best.

Birds are also highly recommended to keep. Not confined in cages I would infer.
