Asalam alaikum was rahmat Allah wa barakatu. Hi everyone, I am sorry to ask an awkward question on a public forum, but I am a new muslimah and would really appreciate any information! My husband likes one of us to always be wearing some article of clothing (normally it's socks) when we are intimate. He says that it will keep shaitan from reaching our child if I were to become pregnant. I have tried googling this and have found opinions of scholars that say that there is no reason for couples to have to wear clothing during intercourse. However, these are all Sunni resources and my husband is Shia. Is there a different opinion in the school of ahl albayt?

Furthermore, he also told me that water can count as a cover, so it is permissible to be intimate in the shower without clothing. Once again, can anyone direct me to information about this?

Either way, I will respect my husband's wishes as I love him and want to be a good wife, but I would just like to know. Thank you very much!

Salam sister Congratulation for embracing Islam as a religion. It is really admirable that you care about your husband and his feelings. I have to say he is right regarding your first question. It is highly recommended for a couple no to be naked during an intercourse. It is not obligatory but it is very bless full and helpful for the child you are going to have. Of course this recommendation would be carried by wearing simply a piece of cloth over a part of your body and being under a shower is not considered as a cover though.

(salam)

The socks issue seems like your husband's personal preference or maybe he has read this:

One thing that they found was putting the couples off the task was literally cold feet.

When they gave the couples socks to wear, about 80% of the couples were able to achieve orgasm compared with 50% previously in this staged environment.

I haven't read anything about wearing socks preventing Shaytan reaching a child. I highly doubt people in Arabia wore socks in 50 degree heat 1400 years ago, while being intimate.

The rule of thumb is that all activities between husband and wife are allowed, minus a few acts that may be prohibited under specific scenarios or simply be makruh

Furthermore, he also told me that water can count as a cover, so it is permissible to be intimate in the shower without clothing

Generally what is understood by cover by most is something like a blanket, not that you are wearing clothes. I don't think a shower will be considered or seen as a "cover" in any 'urf (custom), but it is permissible to be intimate in the shower without clothing. With regards to being intimate with clothing or a covering on, please refer to this thread where we had a discussion on it: http://www.shiachat.com/forum/topic/235023076-men-not-allowed-to-be-naked-brothers-only-please/

Wassalam

Salam,

Firs of all wearing cloth is not necessary (Wajib )for couples though its recommended in some Hadith, not to be all naked, so Fughaha (Juristprudents) say " the consonant between two kinds of Hadith( the one which says; no matter to be naked while the other types say not to be naked ) is as following "being naked is Makruh not haram.

Secondly, wearing socks has nothing to do with Hadith, this is something cultural, the reference here to come to know what would be regarded as wearing, is the common-law which may vary from point to point but for sure water in non of the culture considered as a cover. being cautious of such things though is good but not to some extent it would turn to an anxiety and worry.

Stay safe, I wish you both long life full of joy with ذریه طیبه good and pure offspring.
