Rape Charges 'a Fashion'

NEW DELHI: Indian right-wing party Shiv Sena Saturday said filing sexual assault charges has “become a fashion” in an article backing a police officer accused of rape.

The hardline nationalist outfit — a key ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government based in Maharashtra state — threw its support behind a senior state police officer who has been accused of rape by a model and questioned the victim's intentions.

“Cases of charging men with molestation and rape in hi-fi (high) societies to create hype is on a rise now. It has almost become a fashion,” the hardline Hindu nationalist outfit wrote in its mouthpiece, “Saamana” (To Confront).

“After he has served for so many years in the police force, one model now charges DIG (deputy inspector general) Sunil Paraskar with rape and in one night he becomes a villain.

"Such accusations have become good weapons to seek personal revenge."

It added that the Indian judicial system needed to “open its eyes” and protect the innocent because “all the laws in the country favour women so anyone can slap any charge against anyone”.

The model who filed the rape complaint, and who cannot be named for legal reasons, hit out at the Shiv Sena article later Saturday.

“This matter is in court, no-one should be commenting in sensitive matters like this without knowing all the facts,” the woman told national news agency Press Trust of India.

India toughened sex assault laws following the fatal gang-rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in December 2012 which sparked nationwide protests, but the move has done little to stem sex attacks against women.

Last month the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl in a school triggered a series of street protests by angry parents and political activists over the lack of safety for women and children in the country.

Delhi gang rape: India outrage over fashion shoot

An Indian fashion shoot showing a woman being groped on a bus has caused anger, with social media users saying it glamorises the 2012 Delhi gang rape.

Photographer Raj Shetye's images show a model fighting off men on a bus, in a scene reminiscent of the rape and murder that shocked India.

Many social media users said they found the photos "disgusting" and "horrible".

Mr Shetye said the shoot was "just a depiction of the situation of women in our country" and not based on the rape.

The photos were taken down from the Behance site after angry reactions on Twitter and Facebook.

The gang rape and murder of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student - dubbed Nirbhaya (fearless) by the media - led to days of protests and forced the authorities to introduce tough new anti-rape laws.

The fruits of democracy

I don't think this is related to democracy at all.

The Indian culture (supported by their religion somewhat) seems to be very degrading towards the women. This promotes disrespect and violence against the women because they are not perceived to be valuable.

Shiv Sena is a right wing hindu nationalist party known for its hate mongering and sectarian politics. recently they tried to force feed a fasting Muslim caterer because apparently the taste of food that he prepared wasn't good enough.(when asked about it they replied that media is biased since it doesn't question a recent incident where a maulvi in afghanistan raped a girl, their intellectual level can be understood from this) This particular incident caused furious response from all over india and caused the disruption of indian parliament. They have been known to beat up girls who go to discos late at night and those who roam out with their bfs on valentines day. They beat up bihari's and the people from uttar pradesh and dont want to allow them to come to their state. They even siad that they would beat people if they go to watch Shah Rukh Khan's movie MY NAME IS KHAN, over some issue. There is nothing to wonder about it if they are saying this.

I tend to disagree that their religion (Hinduism) in anyway supports women degradation. The main reason behind rapes and molestation is illiteracy and mixture of lower class conservative society with somewhat modern culture in big cities like Delhi or Mumbai , where the lower class youth who is used to seeing women in veils and who are not so hormone inducing , sees girls in shorts and western dresses and tends to lose their control over themselves. The lack of proper security for them is another reason.but yet there have been cases of rape with 5 year olds so i guess perverseness is another thing in play.
