Channel 4 News (Ireland): the Irishman that collapsed and died did not have Ebola, but had been treated for Malaria. Cause of death is not stated. The article also describes how his family, the Quinns, only found out about him through the media.

I think this is the craziest part of this outbreak.

Also the latest WHO announcement that they anticipate 20,000 people to be affected by the current virus before the outbreak can be controlled by whatever medicine they may produce.

The fact that 300 mutations occurred in the current outbreak is alarming. Mutation occur over an interval of years. For example, Flu virus mutations occur every 3-5 years.

If you saw a time line of Ebola viruses outbreaks in africa, you ail notice that every 10 years a mild outbreak will rupture then quickly after 3 years a stronger one will hit.

The current outbreak is the milder mutation, 2-3 years later (2016-2017) we should witness another outbreak if this virus is keeping its pattern.

Your timeline and size of outbreaks is a good point, yet previous stuff I read said that what makes the current one "large scale" is before, outbreaks were in isolated areas.

Note: During the Vietnam War, we'd see on television C-5A cargo planes land on short airstrips on firebases. Later, one vet who worked cargo, told me that those C-5As could about safely land "stopped" --they required so little runway. Loaded with heavy military supplies (ammo weighs a lot more than gloves and PPE suits). Vets I knew who were on the firebases said the same.

I think you are confusing the C-5 (huge plane in the background of the photo) and the C-130 (big plane in the foreground of the photo).

 

 

I have taken quite a few flights on C-5's.  Nice airplanes but complex and hard to maintain.  Only once did my flight take off on time.  For it's size, the C-5 has "short field" capabilities.  But, it is a strategic airlifter.  The C-130 is a shortfield airlifter.  Especially the C-130's equipped for rocket-assisted takeoffs.

Oh, and remember, despite the publicized "minimum runway" lengths, actual minimum runway requirements are still classified, even though films as I have mentioned exist.

 

1820hrs, 29Aug14, PBS News Hour, had a film clip of CDC Director, Tom Frieden, who said that Ebola will go global but "we" can contain it. Spot outbreaks, and so forth.

 

Senegal says it has its first confirmed case of Ebola. The man lied about his contacts in Guinea. The implication is he has infected Senegal because he was moving around inside the country.

aircraft.wikia.am may say take-off/landing distances of 8300 ft, BUT, "Modern Combat Aitcraft", Air University Review, air.maxwell.af.mil ,Sept-Oct 1969,by Gen. Howell Estes, paragraph 18, says 1700ft asphalt/2600ft dirt runways [still/remaining at the unclassied level]

The C-5 can deflate its tires inflight as one technique to shorten landing distances, plus reverse thrust, etc.

The C-5 can operate on shorter runways than C-141s.

The thrust to weight ration of C-5 is more than one-to-one, can carry 50 tons.

As for the landing, several videos are on the Net, most are junk or not to our focus of attention. There is one very short landing at an airshow (very impressive), and one at Khe San but doesn't show much as materials are in the way.
