Before the coming of Eid, an invitation to contemplate...

Before the coming of Eid, an invitation to contemplate

And Predictions of the Crescent Moon of Shawwal 1435

قبل حلول العيد.. وقفة تأمل..

توقعات هلال شهر شوال

Dear Believers,

May the peace and blessing and mercy of Allah be upon you. May Allah accept your deeds and worship in this holy month.

It is no secret that the blessed month of Ramadhan is one of the most prominent examples of worship to Allah and seeking His pleasure. At the same time, it is an opportunity to train one’s self and to purify it through socialization on the level of group recitation of the holy Qur’an, gatherings of remembering Allah through supplication and the attainment of knowledge, which reaches its climax on the valuable nights of significance (Qadr). After which all prepare for the divine gift of the joyous day of Eid. There are some who will have mixed emotions when it comes to this great day because of the diverse verdicts with respect to the crescent moon sighting, which in turn result in a variation in ascertaining the day of Eid. Therefore, the question that comes up every year is repeated, is it truly such a great hurdle that has no solution, and if there is a solution, in whose hands is it?

The answer is that there is a practical solution that has been implemented. This solution, is in the hands of the believers themselves when they are at the highest level of awareness and understanding of the Islamic laws, and at the highest levels of precaution. Therefore, for those who truly want a solution, we bring the following to their attention:

·      It is obvious that:

o   With the Greater occultation of Imam Al-Mahdi, may Allah hasten his appearance, come several challenges. One of these challenges is the absence of the ability to ascertain the actuality of the Islamic verdict. Therefore, no one other than the infallible Imam (atf) knows the actual reality, in its entirety, such that they can claim that one opinion is correct while the others are wrong. Therefore, we must be accepting of other juristic opinions that are rooted in the knowledge of the holy household of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

o   The jurists are the ones that have the ability to derive Islamic laws. Without a doubt, the very nature of the derivation of Islamic laws means a diversity of juristic opinions and verdicts. Proving the sighting of the crescent moon is one such issue that has been subject to diverse juristic opinions during the period of the greater occultation. Therefore, we must be accepting of other juristic opinions that are rooted in the knowledge of the holy household of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

o   The sighting of the crescent mooning is proven through the sighting of two just witnesses. The term “just” means a Muslim who is of the twelver (ithna ‘Asherie) school of thought who is consistent in fulfilling his religious obligations (al-wajebat) and who refrains from performing the forbidden acts (al-maharramat). The sighting of the crescent moon is NOT proven through the news of a “trustworthy” individual who has not actually sighted the moon. Therefore, it is important to know the religious ruling for the actual witnessing of the crescent moon.

o   Contentment, in the religious context, is personal and others may not be bound by one’s personal contentment with the witnessing of the crescent moon. Therefore, contentment is not proof upon others and others are not bound by it.

o   The offices of the grand jurists have web sites through which one can communicate directly if one wants to know a religious ruling, or this can be done through their dependable agents across the world. Therefore, there is no reason to disseminate the opinion of a jurist without checking with the proper resources.

o   The jurists do not disagree with the astronomical data, in as much as they are concerned with it providing “knowledge” and “contentment” in the actual sighting of the crescent moon. There is no doubt that the astronomers are the experts in providing accurate calculations, however, they make it clear that their calculations are mathematical predictions and do not give certainty of the actual time and location that the crescent moon can be sighted. Therefore, the predictions of the scientists of astronomy are not binding, except if they give contentment.

·      Practical Solutions:

o   It is important to emulate the grand jurists themselves, three of whom are in the holy city of Najaf, Ayatuallah Sh. al-Fayyadh, Ayatullah Sayyid al-Hakim, and Ayatullah Basheer al-Najafi (may Allah prolong their lives) who differ in their verdict of the unity of sighting horizons with Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Sistani. On more than one occasion, out of respect for the grand jurist and to unify their followers, they called upon their followers to delay the announcement of Eid and performed the Eid prayer the next day. Therefore, we must follow suit – by priority – since we do emulate them.

o   In the period of the greater occultation, the Eid prayer is recommended (not obligatory) and performing it on the next day is acceptable according to the jurists, with the intention of “rajaa’.” Therefore, there is a religious allowance to do so.

o   Parents should sacrifice by taking a two-day vacation from work to provide joy and happiness to every member of the family. Such a sacrifice will be rewarded by increased wealth and blessings on the entire household because one brought happiness into the lives of the believers. Therefore, that which we do outside of Eid should be done on this occasion too.

o   It is important to show understanding of the difficulty of unifying the day of Eid, which will not occur as long as the Imam (atf) is in his occultation and the door to juristic derivation of Islamic law stands. We should show transparency and tolerance by accepting such diversity and educating others and ourselves. Are we not accepting of diversity in other facets of our lives? Why not do the same when it comes to Eid? Therefore, there should be no reason not to open our Islamic centers to all, without bias to one group over another.

In conclusion, the solution is in our hands - if we the believers decide to do so. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. Will you be of those who will begin educating people and distributing the information, and contributing to the joy and happiness of the community on the days of Eid? Or, will you be apathetic towards these solutions and as a result become of those who will not spread awareness and do good deeds? “Allah does not change a people until they change that which within themselves”.

Predictions of the Crescent Moon of Shawwal 1435 A.H.

A number of the providers of astronomical data expect the possibility of sighting the crescent moon of the month of Shawwal 1435 on Sunday at sunset on the 27th of July, 2014 in South America. Based on this information, if the sighting of the crescent moon occurs in accordance with the Islamic rulings (by two justice men and with naked eyes) then the first day of Eid will be:

·      Monday, July 28, 2014:
For those who emulate the jurists whose ruling states that the crescent moon sighting is proven in one land if it is sighted in a land with which is shares the night. This applies to the followers of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid al-Khoei.

·      Tuesday, July 29, 2014:
For those who emulate the jurists whose ruling states that the crescent moon sighting is proven in one land if it shares the crescent moon sighting curves or horizons with another land in which the crescent moon was sighted. In which case, this month it will also be the completion of 30 days. This applies to the followers of Grand Ayatullah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani.

Look for the announcement of the Crescent Moon Committee of The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America, at a later time on Sunday July 27th 2014; or call (313) 562-4626.

In The Name of Allah The Beneficent The Merciful

To all of the believers in North America,

As-Salamu Alaykum (Peace be upon you)

The Crescent Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars in North America announces that Monday will be the last day of the Holy month of Ramadan and Tuesday, the 29th of July 2014, will be the first day of Shawal 1435 AH for the United States and parts of Canada from Halifax to Vancouver.

This determination is based on the fact that there were no reported sightings of the crescent moon of Shawal during the Sunset of Sunday, the 29th of Ramadan (July 27th, 2014) from any location by the naked eye.

Eid Mubarak, and we ask Allah Almighty for success in performing good deeds and the hastening of our master Imam al-Mahdi (a.s.)

The Crescent Committee

  • Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi, Toronto, Canada.
  • Shaykh M. Reza Bagheri, Montreal, Canada.

  • Sayyid Mahboob Mehdi Abedi, Chicago, IL.
  • Shaykh Ja'far Banglori, Miami, FL.
  • Sayyid Nabi Raza Abedi, San Francisco, CA

On more than one occasion, out of respect for the grand jurist and to unify their followers, they called upon their followers to delay the announcement of Eid and performed the Eid prayer the next day.

So if the announcement was delayed, people were prevented from knowing it was Eid, and therefore fasted on Eid, which is haram…?

No I dont think that is what is implied. Basically, they held two eids for unification of the ummah. The eid prayers are not obligatory, so I believe they just held it the next day.

*In the period of the greater occultation, the Eid prayer is recommended (not obligatory) and performing it on the next day is acceptable according to the jurists, with the intention of “rajaa’.” Therefore, there is a religious allowance to do so.

Therefore, I believe they are speaking of celebratory aspect of Eid.
