Norman Finkelstein On Teaching In Iran

Recommended Posts

Danny Postel, Associate Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver and the author of "Reading 'Legitimation Crisis' in Tehran," asks Norman Finkelstein about his experience teaching John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty" in Iran and his thoughts on intellectual life in the Islamic Republic today.

The interview was filmed in DU's Center for Middle East Studies on April 24, 2014.

I found his comment about Iran and Israel being the two nations more obsessed with the Holocaust than anyone else rather funny.

Finkelstein also commented about Chomsky's statements where he has derided Western intellectuals as being "as crazy as the mullahs in Qom" saying that he feels that it's a false comparison since the mullahs he met in Qom were intelligent enough to put many such Western intellectuals that Chomsky dislikes to shame.

He did mention that he feels that the country is perhaps a little too isolated from the rest of the world and this has a bad effect on its intellectual life, citing the fact that some people he met in Iran actually believed that he and former Louisiana State Representative and white nationalist David Duke were leading Western intellectuals or political figures. Norman does, however, mention that at the same time he found a number of people who consider themselves in some way to be supporters of the Islamic revolution and the constitution and not part of the pro-Western crowd but who were still as far he was concerned "very knowledgeable and intelligent," However, he noted that these individuals feel that they have been marginalized and not allowed to openly debate the more serious political issues, especially those regarding the role of the office of the Supreme Leader.

Norm states early in the video that Iranians appear to have unhealthy obsessions with conspiracy theories, particularly those regarding the world (perhaps even the universe) literally being controlled by "the Jews," but followed up on this with the statement that although he himself was Jewish, the Iranian Muslims didn't treat him any differently whatsoever and he never felt unwelcome in the country. :)

Only the people of excellence, can see people of excellence... Sayings of Ali "a.s"

The bad attack the good, the evil attack the pure, the rich attack the poor, the ignorant attack the wise, the strong attack the week, this has append throughout time and will never stop on earth ... Even after 40 yrs of peace after Imam Mahdi "a.s" fixes every thing, the people will go evil again. For the last time.

Chomsky is a complete fool. Finkelstein is better

but the smart Iranians know that Jews don't control the world. Nor do they control the west.

In fact, US, UK control Israel. Israel is a western military depot for projecting hegemony in Western Asia.

It's the imperialism/colonialism in it's rawest form under this pretext of Jews deserving that homeland. Which perfectly works into the equation of the western propaganda for support for israel.

When israel serves it's purpose it will be abandoned when UK/US interests no longer need it.

^ Sayyed Hassan made a reference to this in a speech.

He said that there is a reason why Imam Khomeini called Israel the "little Satan."

No matter how much the Zionist lobby ostensibly has influence over Washington, at the end of the day Israel is hopeless without the US but the US could very well live without Israel.

Thanks for the video and summary, SJ. Gotta love Norman. He has a very keen sense of discernment. He was born to be an academic.

People shouldn't talk about Israel been abandoned as if is a little thing, Israel is a lunatic state (as stated in the past by Dr Finklestein) capable of anything, if they really have their backs against the wall, they would have no qualms in using nuclear bombs against anyone.

Nor should they down play the role that zionism has is world affairs, they control the banking system after all.

Israel got their nuclear weapons only with approval of US/UK...i would bet that the US/UK have more control over israel nuclear weapons launch codes than israel does.

Israel doesn't control the banking system either...zionists have been put in the top positions of these banks. but their actions are approved by the UK monarch and the US.

They try to associate jews with zionism...and also put these jews in important posititions.

It gives the perfect scapegoat
