Bbc: Why Are Buddhist Monks Attacking Muslims?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Of all the moral precepts instilled in Buddhist monks the promise not to kill comes first, and the principle of non-violence is arguably more central to Buddhism than any other major religion. So why have monks been using hate speech against Muslims and joining mobs that have left dozens dead?

This is happening in two countries separated by well over 1,000 miles of Indian Ocean - Burma and Sri Lanka. It is puzzling because neither country is facing an Islamist militant threat. Muslims in both places are a generally peaceable and small minority.

What really disappointed me is Aung San Suu Kyi, who I believed to be one of very few not corrupted politicians, not saying a word in defense of the Rohingya Muslim minority and their suffering in Myanmar (Burma)...

Obviously the hatred against Muslims in Myanmar is so widespread that she fears loosing votes if she addresses this sensitive issue.

So much for politics being fair - it corrupts even the sincerest of all.

The article leaves out an important fact about Burmese anti-Muslim sentiment. The violence there is essentially ethnic and political in nature.

The Burmese claim that Rohingyas are actually a Bengali group from across the border who, in time, entered Burma illegally and settled there to escape their native homeland. That's why Rohingyas are denied citizenship and therefore are essentially stateless.

Burmese claim is only true in part but this doesn't mean they treat as illegals people who have been living there for half a century and more. Many those who are labelled Rohingyas are not migrants but native to the Burmese cities and towns they live in. But they are also lumped together with other Rohingyas who migrated from Bengal, only because they are Muslims.

What's perplexing is that the anti-Muslim sentiment does not exist against non-Rohingya Muslims who settled in Burmese mainland (mostly in former Rangoon or Yangon) during the colonial times and continue to live there as full citizens.

And I have no idea what provoked Lankan Buddhist ire.

I always imagined an "Extremist Buddhist' would be a person who went upto a mountain, didn't eat nor sleep or was seen for days. But it's the opposite.

And now we have a similar situation in Sri Lanka as well, between Sri Lankan Muslims and Sinhalese Buddhists.

Amazing how many conflicts there are, with new ones opening each year, in these past 50 years or so.

I actually sometimes think - it is for a good reason, the Appearance of the Awaited Imam (as)  must be close.

But I do wish that there was something we could do to help those poor people around the world...

Thinking all Buddhists are peace loving monks in mountains is like thinking all Muslims play flutes with dancing snakes on magic carpets.

Come on people.

How did you fit being a muslim to the indian stereotype?

Tbh those days were much better when mentioning arabs and 'muhammadans' brought an image from  "One Thousand And One Arabian Nights".

Sucks how the times change.

Aung San Suu Kyi - is another one of those liberal imperial puppets - nothing more nothing less - generally useless western democracy promoters types. As such she has the same bigotry that empire does against Muslims. Bhuddhists are essentially an ethnic grouping, - same as Hindus in India - they include many ethnic group, but are united by their beliefs, and their hatred for the "other" - in present day times against Muslims. Another example is the extreme feudal lordship system that the Dalai Lamas Tibet presided over before the Chinese took over, - the Lama who people think is all "peaceful" really has no qualms with hanging out with and breaking bread with some of most extremist violent people of the planet. Such kinds are not to be trusted, ever.

In buddhism you are only allowed to harm other sentient beings if it will in the long term benefit more sentient being than if the harm had not been done. The buddhist monks believe that if islam is allowed to grow in their country, buddha dharma will decrease. If buddha dharma will decrease, sentient beings all across the world will loose. That's why they're allowing themselves to do whatever it takes to keep the country a buddhist country as it'll benefit more sentient beings in the long run than if it were a muslim nation, which many buddhist believe will do more harm to sentient beings than good.
