It is Makrooh for the actual intercourse (penetration) to be conducted fully nude, as in one should have a sheet or blanket over them. Of course, not between the husband and wife, over them as in they are both under it together. Foreplay and other acts which are not intercourse can be conducted fully naked, as far as I know, and of course a husband and wife may look freely upon each others private areas at other times, for example, getting out of the shower.

What we have in hadiths is that "being naked (taking off all the clothes) during intimacy" is makruh , so just putting or having a sheet or blanket over them is not enough for avoiding the makruh, rather one can wear a light clothes covering his body partially for avoiding the makruh.

I have read on Al-Islam that men cannot approach their wife naked, I think its makruh.

It is not just for men but also applied to women as well. It is makruh for them to get naked completely during intimacy , however the ruling is just applied during intercourse not in other situations like: foreplay, taking bath, ....

Can you explain why this is?

No explanation has been given in hadiths . So the answer your question would be identical to the answer of this question " Why morning prayer is 2 rak'ah?"

There are so many rulings in Islam that we don't know the exact reason of them, but we accept them, because we believe it has been sent down to human kind from the most Knowledgeable, the most Beneficent and the most Wise Creator, who knows what is good for us- so he ordered us to do it- and what is bad for us -so he ordered us not to do it.

"It is narrated that Muĥammad bin al-Ais asked Imām as-Ŝādiq (as): “Is it permissible to go near my wife naked (i.e. make love naked)?” Imām replied: “No, don’t do such a thing…"

This is what I actually read and judging from this it seems its makruh to be fully nude. How do you know if the man (Mohammed bin al-Ais) meant to have 'sexual intercourse' since "go near" could also mean foreplay, or simply approach his wife.

From what I comprehend, (i.e. the reason) is that it is done to promote foreplay, as when men starts naked he might not fulfill the needs of the women and will move on to his need. So first foreplay and then later the man can also take of clothes.

We need to cut down on these sex related threads. Too many threads on subjects such as mutah & masturbation.

Too many young unmarried people on here bro, that is why.

It's what's on people's minds.  You can cut down and regulate the threads, but not people's thoughts.

It is beyond the capacity of moderating team to stop people from thinking those thoughts but it is within their prerogative to stop people from posting those thoughts here.

Marbles: ref to post #10:  I agree with you, yet I have an additional view.

Like a teacher who gets the same questions every year, we know these subjects re-occur. This gives us older guys a chance to write stuff that these younger guys haven't heard/read another way than what they got from their families.

In general, I say people who are always preoccupied by sex are this way because they are so "sexually challenged". I got this from the "dirty joke rule" Amerikan women use to have: you stop the first one because the only way the next dirty joke can be 'funny' is if it is dirtier than the one before it. Follow?

MODs, left me have some lee way on this:  Example on how to handle younger men. So some friends of ours were having problems with their teenager. So while we were at the house, and his father sitting, this boy starts getting all dreamy-eyed about this girl inviting some idiot on TV into her house for the night.

So I wave to my wife --standing behind the boy so he didn't see it-- and motioned for her and the other women to put their fingers in their ears. So the idiot on TV starts to enter the house and I say (near quote) "That's it,  you dumb s__of a b___,  GO for the AIDs. G.___D___idiot. Then I say to his father so the boy will hear it, "Of course, maybe he will luck out and only get 'the clap'. But then again there's the herpes, TB, chlamydia, syph, lice and a bunch of other stuff.'

His father is looking at him, the boy, while I am saying this. So later when we out smoking I ask his father and he said he talked to the boy to see if I 'got through' and I had. When his son joined us I asked "Point Made?" and he said, "I never thought about it that way before."  Then I told him a story my Father told me --which I'll skip unless someone wants to know it. Later, his mother told me his older sister said, "I wish he(me) was my cousin because I wanted to kiss him for that." because she came down the stairs as this started and could see the effect it had on her not-behaving brother. He did behave after that because he became rightfully scared.

o, yes, I get tired of these topics too. Most of them are pretty inane in their posts, but ShiaChat does provide a safe outlet for the younger guys.

I posted this on the brothers forum, also whats wrong with this thread? you really think I can approach an Imam in person and ask him?

We need to know and where can we know but here? its hard to ask such questions from elders, parents and Imams in person.

Can someone answer my question please, since you are all 'grown up' and we kids need to know. the original question is still not answered.

Thank you

It is not necessary for us to know the exact reasons for these things, but a possible explanation could be that it may have negative spiritual or physical effects on both the man and a woman. Sex in Islam has a spiritual dimension to it, and in order to maintain a level of humanity and dignity and not stoop down to a completely animalistic level, these things may have been prohibited or strongly discouraged by the Imams (as). Perhaps an act may not have a negative effect in it of itself (like in this case, having sex completely naked or in another narration: having sex while standing up and how it has been compared to donkeys), but they may lead to things or make one prone to things which could have negative effects. For example, during the act of sex, a man holding or pulling a woman's hair may not be wrong, but it could leave a woman feeling degraded subconsciously or that feeling of humanness between both of them may decrease. A man may subconsciously or even consciously forget that who he is with is a human, develop egoistic and other beastly tendencies (even if it is temporarily) and this act that technically should be done for the sake of reaching closer to Allah [swt], loses its value as both begin to resemble animals more than humans. Again we are not talking about haram and halal, but trying to understand why something like this could be considered makruh.

No duh, genius.

People will express their thoughts in one place or another.  If its not here, it will be somewhere else, and probably less Islamic than here.  Or at the very least, it will be reduced to a lonely internal mind game, wasting mental energy.  How long can somebody keep it locked inside like that?  Not many.  I'm more cynical about the human race.  Most people don't have control and will release their anger/fear/lusts/emotions at the smallest poke.

Discussing topics like this in a highly regulated and anonymous enviornment like this is probably best to be honest.

It might be hard for you to relate, you being the paragon of internal tranquility, self-control and all that.

Salamunalaykum dear brother,

I personally don't think it's to do with being animalistic. Foreplayis highly, infact, extremely encouraged in Islam, but the Prophet pbuh and the Imams a.s themselves. Therefore i am more inclined to the option that a man shouldn't approach his wife without clothes - maybe in order that they do not quickly complete their act - which is disliked in the religion of Islam.

Almost anything and everything (apart from one or two things) is allowed and many times even encouraged between a husband and wife

I don't know which part of my post gave the impression that foreplay implies being animalistic. Foreplay is an essential part and parcel of sex. Rather I was speaking and referring to the etiquette of how sex in it self should be conducted, why certain acts could be considered makruh or mustahab. Your opinion also seems plausible. As I said, we may never know the exact reason or the reasons could be various and that there is no necessity for us to know the reasons either since these are the ahkaam of Allah [swt]. As long as we know the latter, we are to submit to them regardless of whether they make sense to us or not.

Salamunalaykum,

You are right, you never mentioned foreplay. I just wanted to show if something as intimate as foreplay was encouraged, than being without any clothes surely is no real problem of itself.

That' why i said, maybe we were forbidden from being totally without clothes so we do not simply have sex, but rather partake in foreplay as Muhammed pbuh taught, so the needs of both the husband and wife are met.

These are ofcourse only my opinions

maybe its possible to divide the sections so that in the brother chats its not allowed for female members to join and in the section for women should be a place fot them beeing alone to discuss some topics. thats how it is in the german shia-forum

<<<Wait what?? wear clothes while being intimate with wife?, strange...... >>>

Salams

I don't think the narration is asking you to remain clothed during the act. The narration in which the Imam is prohibiting to 'approach the wife naked' makes much more sense when it is seen as an advise not to jump around naked like monkeys and instead be more human by covering oneself (with a cloth or blanket e.t.c). It only takes one to be married to realise how preposterous it is to prohibit couples from being able to enjoy one another's warmth; this coming from the same religion which stresses upon oral sex and the rights of women. So for example, Imam Rida advises to caress wife's breasts 1 as she will be overcome by passion. It is beyond me as to how one accomplishes this task without taking clothes off. Similarly Imam Kadhim allows to kiss the private parts of wife 1; again an impossible task if we decide to keep clothes on.

Another perspective; if we look at various recommendations or mannerism regarding intercourse, it has to do with ensuring that the process is carried out in a calm and focussed environment. So for example, it is highly discouraged to have sex during earthquake, or while standing or under the sky, or on a boat, or when people are present (in the house) e.t.c In my view, the same idea is applicable in this case as it is a much calm, focussed and comfortable experience while remaining under a cloth or a blanket.

Salam, brother.

I think it's perfectly reasonable. The sheet or blanket over them will generate an atmosphere of togetherness, and the quality of intimacy would acquire a spiritual dimension to it. During intercourse--a time when all rational thoughts leave the mind completely--the blanket will serve as a reminder to protect not only our own modesty but also a spouse's.

Hope this helps :)

Salam.
