Al salam alycom,

I live in a western country, in which there are many products that is made of real leather, and many of the products states that is "made in Italy" or "made in France" for instance. However most of the leather that is used in for instance car seats and bags have been gone through machines and have been "treated" by for instance colors and other products. As the leather is treated it will be coated and treated. In this case, due to the procedures that the leather has undergone such as coloring and other chemical procedures will this not prevent the leather from getting wet, as it is only the surface that is getting wet and thus for instance rain/water and sweat will not reach the leather itself? And for instance will this not make the leather as istihala? (As There are also many leather products that does not smell nor looks like leather because of the color used). I hope my question was clear.

Wa salam.

as long as you are not sure that such procedure does make a thick barrier on the leather, the color is to be considered as a part of leather .

but you may find some ways to consider the leather it self pure

Ayatu Allah Sistani

Question: What is your ruling on buying and using leather products in non-Muslim countries?

Answer: Leather products are impure (najis) and salãt in them is not permissible, if we know that they have been made from the hide of an animal not slaughtered according to Islamic laws. Such products are considered pure and salat in them is permissible, if there is a probability that they were made from skin of an animal that is essentially halãl and was slaughtered according to Islamic laws.

Oh also be sure to put down your belt or leather pocket or watch or anything that is made from leather during prayer, then wear them again after finishing the prayer.

Most of time, the leather pocket goes forgotten inside pocket while making prayer.

nope! putting such product is not Haram. you could use them and in the case of wetness ( caused by sweat or etc) if you are sure that your skin become wet you must pure it.

WS,

I think we do have ahadeeth telling us to avoid such products from non-Islamically slaughtered animals. Some may say it's makrooh; some may say it's haraam. Allah knows best. I don't know, but I do know that we have many Islamically-slaughtered leather goods available for sale. Try for leather made in Pakistan, India, or other Islamic countries.

Thank you all for your answers and feedback. But is it possible to get an exact answer to mt question, regarding if color and other chemical treatments can be a barrier to the real leather, and najasat will not transfer? Thank you again

Salaams,

Just bumping the topic up because I have the exact same question (leather car seats/interiors).

Sel, you did a wonderful job summarizing the question :).
