Why Did Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh) Come To The Arabs?

Rate this topic

And is it true that all Prophets or divenly appointed figures, that have come to guide their respective populations, came because their people were considered the worst or most in need of them at the time? I previously read some verses in the Quran regarding this but I have since forgotten which verse it was. It was about our prophet(PBUH) and the Arabs of the time in Arabia? Can someone help me with this please. Thank you. :)

^ How is that so? What about people who don't speak arabic? He was sent there because the Arabs were the most backward people & still many ended up rejecting him. When Imam Al Mahdi (as) comes, according to traditions there won't be many  people (or if any) from the arabs in his army probably due to the same reasons.

Well I can think of two reasons right now:

  1. What @Hussainiyat Zindabad said, with this explanation: Arab nation was the least educated place in the world and the furthest behind society of its time, and you can say, in the history. So the fact that Prophet Muhammad was sent to them, and managed to bring them to such unity and glorious achievements, will remove any excuse from any other nation in the world, at any time.
  2. Arabic language and literature was at a high peek at that time and it was a good chance to send a prophet with Quran as miracle to people who know the greatness of its words and also make an infinite source of knowledge for other nations, using a language that can bear such amount of knowledge.

1st: those verses are the beginning verses of chapter Ibrahim but that's for the prophets before our beloved prophet s. The final one who is sent to all humanity for the rest of human history till the end, stated explicitly by Holy Qur'an

2nd: if it was in another language, say Turkish,I would have asked: why turkish and not arabic? There's no end to such questions.

3rd: arabic being the language of Janna doesn't mean only arabs go there, it has allegorical meanings.

I always thought that Quran has answered this question:

(Surat Shu'ara-26)

And most surely this is a Revelation from the Lord of the worlds

The Faithful Spirit has descended with it

Upon your heart that you may be of the warners

And most surely the same is in the scriptures of the ancients

Is it not a sign to them that the learned men of the Israelites know it?

And if we had revealed to any of the foreigners

So that he should have recited it to them, they would not have believed therein

Thus have We caused it to enter into the hearts of the guilty
(Shkir)

and about these verses i found  this hadeeth :

 في قوله تعالى: «وَ لَوْ نَزَّلْناهُ عَلى‏ بَعْضِ الْأَعْجَمِينَ» إلخ،
قال الصادق ع: لو نزلنا القرآن على العجم ما آمنت به العرب- و قد نزل على العرب فآمنت به العجم- فهذه فضيلة العجم.

Imam  Sadiq a.s. said: [the verse says] " if we revealed Quran on foreigners , Arabs would not have believe in it "
(but) Quran has been revealed on Arabs and  foreigners believed it and this is a merit for foreigners .

i think if the Imams were sent to any other nation, such as the Romans or Greeks at the time, they would have benefited from these personalities , they wouldnt have killed them like the Arabs did to Imam Husayn and the other Imams

if Imam Ali and Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) went to the Greeks and Romans of the time, the whole world now would be speaking Roman or Greek, and they would have never let go of it

the miracles that the Prophet and Imams could have done to prove their true divine leadership, and the knowledge of the whole universe they had to give to the people, the ancient Romans and Greeks would have used that and milked that instead of killed it and imprisoned that such as the Arabs did

it would have been instant success for Islam and it would have never ceased to exist

the Europeans are not as blunt as the Arabs where, they only wanted Power as history showed and at the moment of the death of the Prophet what happened happened, the Islam world died with him, and the 3 caliphs permanently damaged Islam

but had that been the Europeans they would have accepted the Prophets and Imams , if not for their religion but for their knowledge because they always held knowledge in a high place and most of their leaders pursued it, even if it was nonsense knowledge such as magic etc the Imams and the Prophet would have guided them to the truth and they would have accepted it

Arabic Culuter would be the best for Islam. Arabic is yes the language of Jannah. He was also the final prophet. Meaning the Arabs didn't get one yet so he was the prophet to them and the Middle east is the center of earth. Islam could reach the north near Russia east in India and west in Africa and in Turkey. Allah knows best and he takes every reason possible to make a decision and he chose the arabs just imagin Islam if it was started in Far East Asia it would be way to different and imperfect.

Nonsense. There were plenty of Arab prophets. Ismail, Ayyub, Dhul Qarayn, etc.

Salam. There's a book by a Syrian Sunni Muslim scholar, Mohamed Said Ramadan Al-Bouti (who was martyred for supporting Syria against NATO bought "muslims") and it is titled, فقه السيرة النبوية  "Jurisprudence Biography of the Prophet" [Though there was some mistakes in his book about history, his reasoning and deriving lessons of divine commands and prophetic actions are amazing], and in the very beginning of the book, you can find many reasons listed for this specific question. I hope you can find that book. ma salam

The reason why he(saww) was sent to arabia was to give another strong argument for islam. Because he brought the quran and nobody teached him anything. So its a miracle that the quran came out of arabia because there was absolute ignorance.u had arabs who used to dip hair in blood and eat it. After islam came that place changed a lot. Great scientist and thinkers came from there like khwarizmi for example

I quoted the translation from " Shakir " as i wrote at the end of Ayat.

So that he should have recited it to them, they would not have believed therein

(Shakir)

and i didn't translated it !

Anyway:

I think even with "some of foreigners" there is no different in conclusion which is " if we had revealed quran to non Arabs , Arabs would not believe it " the point that we find in Imam Sadiq a.s. hadith.

salam everyone

The Prophet, Muhammad (saww), came to Mecca (Hijāz) not just only for Arabs, though other prophets came to their respective population for a need in that society. The great difference between them is that prophet Muhammad (saww) is the last prophet for all humans in all time and he is not restricted to Mecca. So there should be significant reasons that, belonging to all humans and depending to the world, Islam has selected that area (Hijāz). Briefly I mention to some:

1.      Geopolitical status of Mecca: Hijāz is the linking region between three main continents (Asia, Europe and Africa) which mean approximately the whole world’s population in the time. So with regard to the methods of the communications in that time, the area is the best for spreading over the whole world fast.

2.      Scientific-cultural status of Arabs: although Arabs developed their language, they had a backward culture and basic knowledge. They were burying their daughters alive and they didn’t have a great development knowledge about philosophy, physics, mathematics, chemistry etc. while in the time Rome, Iran and Egypt were progressed. It could be possible to claim that Muhammad (saww) was impressed and influenced by Plato or Aristotle or any scientists and scholars if he had come in those development districts and empires. The cultural differences between the prophet and the society of Arabs affirm that his teaching was not resumption of the present status and had a different source.

3.      The language of the region: Prophets Miracle should be in harmony with their culture and society. Islam is the last religion and needs an eternal miracle which is in harmony with the whole world and that is “Qoran”. To express and specify a subject and thought, Arabic language is the most perfect language and that’s another reason to select the region.

4.      There are some other preferable reasons that affirm selecting the region like including Kaba and not having a strong government or empire.

So Islam has selected the region (Hijāz) not only for Arabs but also for all the world…

@followers, I think it would have been better if you had worded your sentence like this:

It could be possible that if Muhammad (saww) was in any of those progressed regions, those against him would claim that he had learned what he was saying from individuals like Plato or Aristotle and that he wasnt bringing this message from God and this would cause the people to doubt his truthfulness

but the point youre making is a valid one. thanks!

From what I understand, it was because at the time, the Arabs were some of the most uncivilised or backwards societies in the world who practiced many weird or inhumane rituals, such as burying of baby girls alive, and worshipping of false idols and "gods".

It was prophesied in Injil (which means behsara or good news) that the prophet of end of times will appear from the mount of paran or faran or Pharan which is located somewhere in hijaz the west strip of arabia , many jews and christians inhibited that size specifically because they knew that there is something about it...

Prophet Muhammad is descendant of Ibrahim through his son Isma'il which makes a connection to Judaism , Prophet was the good news that prophet Jesus came with, hence the connection with Christianity. According to the history, the Christians and Jews of Arabia accepted the prophethood of our prophet because it is more likely that they had a less corrupted bible than those who lived closer to the Empire.

Judaism and Christianity are the established and well organized religions, also they have holy books. The rest of the humanity as far as I know lack a holy book and well organized religion. African people are quick to accept Islam when it is presented to them properly. Far eastern people also accepted Islam through trade with Muslims.

Islam spreading stopped when Muslims got weaker militarily, politically and intellectually , It is not a surprise that we hear about converts in increasing numbers nowadays with internet , although this is being obstructed also by falsely accusing Islam , misrepresenting Islam and the wide spread of things that make people take life lightly like drugs, porn and depression.

On another note, Arabic is related to Aramaic and Hebrew languages , some of the verses in the three holy books if you looked them up will look very much similar. This is helpful when someone is trying to link the dots and comes out with proper meanings. Arabic is also magnificent in the way it allows few words to express many number of meanings, although we do have small one volume book but within it there are many sciences…., Who is best to keep this magnificent book except Arabs who are not good at anything in their whole history except in poetry and language lol

One more thing, Arabs do not tend to do philosophy or lean to metaphorical meanings for things they do not understand, which helped preserving the religion from turning to some new age meaningless moral teachings .

BUT, the higher meanings of religion , apart from fish and rituals, were mostly preserved by the civilized nations in Iraq and Persia. Although they were Arabs as well (Kufah were Arab Yemeni tribes, Qum also are Yemni tribes that migrated there) Those civilized nations were the one who raised the flags of Ahlulbayt

OP: its a wrong question when people say why did Prophet (pbuh) came to the Arabs.

The Prophet of Islam did not come TO the Arabs, he came TO all of the humanity and many more universes/people that we don't know of.

Now as far as why Prophet (pbuh) was sent in Makkah was due to grand design of Allah swt. Makkah was setup, Kaaba was built, the Bait ul Mamoor was on top of Kaaba way before the times Arabs ever settled there or even in some cases humanity was born.

There were other factors too as to why Qur'an was revealed in Arabic, why prophet's place was chosen in Makkah and Madina and so on.

But again the point to be noted is:

Prophet did NOT come TO Arabs...... Prophet came to all humanity and beyond.

Another way of looking at this is as follows.

1. The Prophet (s.a.w.) as we believe is the final seal and had a message for everyone (as WfHIM observes). Geographically then he had to come to a region from where the message could be effectively spread as wide as possible.

2. As I have observed somewhere else he had to come at a time (in terms of history) when language and communication would have reached a level where the message could be sensibly communicated and not lost. Bear in mind that it was only 500 years previously that the Christian message had to go through numerous translations.

3. He also had to come to a people where there was enough critical mass to take up the message and spread it.

But ignoring the above points bear in mind that the Qu'ran is heavily embedded in a Judeo/Christian narrative and has its criticisms of it. Clearly that significant element of the message would have had no meaning for anyone outside the middle east.

It really has most significance for people who are aware of Jewish/Christian identity and ideology and for whom it provides an alternative and perhaps more believable monotheistic narrative.

I am not expressing this very well, but I think the idea is along the right lines and needs refinement.
