Best Way To Learn Arabic

I do distance learning. I use eaalim.com and my tutor is from Egypt. But there are many others like Shiatutor and if you are looking for free stuff then madinaharabic website is quite good.

For how long have you been taking classes on eaalim? Do you recommend? What are the cons?

Eaalim is good. I recommend MadinahArabic because that is free. Start from there and then go on to any provider. I been taking tajweed and Arabic classes from eaalim for 1 year 4 months. Once a week though. I really enjoy it. Even the recording of first lesson is available to listen back to and tutors are well versed. Everything is moderated so you have full control. That being said, like everything else, your learning is something you control. I am doing a degree on the side so once a week lesson is all I take and I barely review it. Had I paid attention though then I could have completed entire Arabic basic-intermediate within the year. My tutor is very very good. He is from Egypt and he teaches for few of these online providers. I can quite easily speak Arabic and when I read the Quran I know roughly what is being said. Again, in urdu we have a term, jitna gurr utna meeth. The more hard work you do the more you will learn. I have during holidays used eaalim and MadinahArabic together and it was good. I learned a lot. I pay £45 for 5 classes every Sunday (5 week subscription). If I can't make it, you have to tell them like a day before and they cancel that lesson and its up to you if you want it next week or whenever. After Tajweed course I intend to stay with them and do a Hafiz course as well. They have downloadable books that you can use. I specially love the bit where I can go into any previous lesson and while the recording is playing I can move the screen up or down and pause to add to my notes. By the way, I do both courses as 1 to 1 Tution. Though they have cheaper joint classes, I prefer having a Arab tutor who I can ask as many questions as I need to ask and get all the clarification. As easy example is in Sarah Waqiah. When in a lesson, I learned Iza means IF. So When I was reading Surah Waqiah when I started learning Arabic, I asked the tutor that it says IF here so why does the translation say WHEN. So he said that the word has dual meaning. Learning depends on you. No one in this world is unable to learn. Just need the right mind set and a right teacher/method. Because I know i have a tutor, I have to make time for Arabic and then when I stand for Salat Ul Layl etc its so much more better. I feel like my heart is out of my body standing focusing on my words even when I reach Al afu, I know what I am saying and I mean it. This then makes my tears come and I cry and cry and that never use to happen before as I didn't knew what I was saying and I was just reading stuff like a parrot. I started it now though I am extremely busy because life is too short. I read that on the day of judgement people will say God send us back and God will say no because you will do what you use to do even if I send you back. I guess I would be busy forever with wives, perhaps kids, I will never stop studying, I have already studied a lot of subjects like welding, engineering, therapies via distance learning etc and I don't intend to stop so if I wouldn't have started and died, Allah's argument would stand against me as well lol. But if I die now, at least I can say that look, I was making progress so please take into consideration that had I been alive for 100 years and carried on as I was then I could have mastered Arabic and remain steadfast on the right path and learned the Quran and taught other people what I know. Yes I studied law too lol. Anyways thats just my two cent of wisdom, take it or leave it :)

Thanks for your input. I've been thinking of joining some Arabic course myself. I am just learning bit by bit on my own and have decided to pursue a full course soon.

 

How many students there are in a joint class? And do we get to choose the tutor?

I don't know how many people are in the joint classes as I have never taken one. You don't get to pick a tutor. One is allocated to you and the tutor will be the same gender as the student. Funny enough, even the moderator are the same gender as the student and the tutor. I just find that very respectable of them. Its never to late to learn :). I got my sister enrolled two weeks ago and she loves it. Her tutor is from Yemen. The tutor and students can't see each other. There is only voice. If you are not sure just ask for a demo lesson. See how it is. If you like it Bismillah and if you don't then try other providers. Just remember though, learning path requires commitment and time. Like anything, you would have to do extra reading and review your lesson and practice. I tend to watch Al-Nabras etc to keep my language going. Then I also read the Quran. But you will progress more the more time that you give it. I am not going to lie to you, I hate joint lessons. Thats why I done all my education after college from home. Because other students may not be so keen or too keen and its hard to keep pace. I remember when I was doing engineering, we had 2 ultra keen people in the class (who were repeating the whole year again because they failed it) and they use to control the class by pushing the teacher to teach more. It came to a point that after 20 mins I could just hear teacher move his lips and everything use to go blank. Few people use to fall asleep. I think I use to fall asleep too. Anyways, the whole class failed lol and the teacher was sacked. But I lost my apprenticeship because of it and because I went over the age of 18 at that time because of that teacher wasting the year, I couldn't afford to repay for the course etc. But then again you maybe far more efficient and motivated than me and combine course with extra resources like youtube and websites which teach Arabic and who knows maybe in future you can teach Arabic to people. Just try different providers. Ask them that can you just see a test class (without paying anything of course since you aren't being taught). See how you like it. If you think its good go for it otherwise look elsewhere. But no matter what you do, remember to give good feedback. Like, if you feel the tutor is not very motivating or has background noise etc then advise the provider of this. This way, maybe the tutor may not be extra happy but you are helping those learners who aren't confident enough to give feedback (some people are too shy to claim their right) and that will make that tutor also a better tutor.

 

If you want some notes that I made over the years let me know. I got pdf books and stuff. If I like a website, I copy and paste it and organise it for my reading as pdf so when I finish my exams its me and Arabic. I just checked and I got 507 files in my Arabic folder excluding videos and audios. Things like numbers, dictionaries and some websites that I copied and pasted for my own reading.

If I like a website, I copy and paste it and organise it for my reading as pdf so when I finish my exams its me and Arabic. I just checked and I got 507 files in my Arabic folder excluding videos and audios. Things like numbers, dictionaries and some websites that I copied and pasted for my own reading.

Well, of course I understand the student-tutor will be the same gender but I'd asked to check if people are given options to choose a tutor who is either recommended by somebody else or has better qualifications etc.

I tried to learn french through LiveMocha, it helped in refreshing what i knew already (greetings, few random words and the pronouns). I forgot almost all the other vocabs that I've learned through Mocha now.  if you are not continuous in studying, ye might not get the best of results.  Live Mocha can be good for alphabets, random words and basic stuff like pronouns, but live classes might be the best choice for second level or third level language study.

Thanks bro.  Sounds like LiveMocha would be good to supplement formal Arabic lessons but not enough on its own
