10 Years Completed! Reflections

I don't think we have had any/many landmark threads on SC, so perhaps this can do for those people who have completed 10 years (under the same handle).

Perhaps this or other landmark threads could be used by posters to comment on their own usage of SC, rather than comment on the site itself.

I registered the account in 2004.

Till 2008 I was an ordinary member, when I was asked to become a Mod.

While I was an ordinary member, I had posts edited and deleted, I never complained about it though…on the basis that there were site rules and it was best to try and follow them.

I've kept coming back because, well there's nowhere else to go to for Shia focused discussions. I know people have tried to set up sites in the past, but beyond recruiting their friends these ventures have not really gone anywhere.

So this seems to be the best that we have. I think I have gained a lot from being here, not least in terms of knowing about trends, developments and controversies in Shiadom. 

I've tended to post more on the business/politics type forums because that's where I feel I can more knowledgeably contribute, with my degrees/work covering business and also health.

For those who can remember, my avatar before the current one used to be (before an SC database problem) an image of Ayatollah's Khomeini and Khamenei. In that respect I think I have stayed a fairly consistent supporter of the IRI, albeit not a diehard one.

Most people here are fairly young and don't appreciate that before the Revolution, Shia identity and practice was dissolving. We were all in danger of becoming Muharram/Ramadan Muslims or even non-practising ones.

I'll post more later. My son wants to have a go on the Reading Eggs website, which I can HIGHLY recommend for kids aged 3-8.

It will be officially 10 years for me in March (if I'm not mistaken), though I had been reading the forum since 2003, I officially signed up in 2004. My username says I registered in 2005 and there is a whole story about that as well (thank you Ya 3ba :P), but you should be able to find all my posts before that as well. I've changed my username a couple of times (though I guess many - at least older members - can almost all guess who I am just by looking at my post count).

Till 2006-2007 I was considered hands down the biggest spammer on the forum, and only became somewhat serious when I was made a Chat Mod first and then after a year I was promoted to a Mod and then eventually made an Admin of the website. I think that was the only choice I had left Ali (owner of the site) in order to make me less of a spammer. I resigned as an admin after 2008 summer I believe. 

My views on Shi'ite Aqeeda have definitely changed over the past decade, I take more precaution in what I tend to believe in now. As I was always into looking at things from a historical perspective and understanding them, I would say I am still pretty much the same in that regards. Currently I'm studying in the seminary in Qom and I have to say that my stay on Shia Chat has helped a fairly decent extent. It has broadened my vision and I realize not everything is black and white. Furthermore, you get good exposure to the different views (whether correct or incorrect) prevalent among Shi'ite communities or individuals who are not connected to any communities, through this forum.

I've also realized that no matter what view one tends to hold, why there is such a strong emphasis in Islam on Akhlaq. I feel very strongly about bettering one's ethics and morals. Over the past few years, the Akhlaq of the individuals has really degraded on the forum - the members were a lot friendlier during the earlier years, I don't know whether this is just a phase or whether external factors that influence humans have become so bad that we get to see the reality of some people when they are behind the screen.

I believe you make a mistake by saying that those criticizing Iran or Revolution are mostly young people. The majority of critics(not only on this side) are probably between 35 and 50 and older, so not the young.

I have been a member for 8.5yrs, but actually been following Shiachat for around 10yrs.

Initially the vast majority of my posts were in shia/sunni forum.  This was pretty much all I was interested in. 

After a few years I realised a few things.  The main thing I realised was that I wasn't really benefiting from these discussions.  I was learning more and more about the khulafa, bani umayya etc but didn't feel any closer to God.  I think there was an initial increase in imaan when I first started reading about this topic, but after that things plateaued, and perhaps even declined - it's not spiritually healthy when most of your study of Islam is reading about schisms, misguided people, and bukhari.

So I then focused more on Qur'an, tafsir and spirituality.  I read a lot of Tafsir AlMizan - the greatest tafsir ever written - and posted more about these topics.

I also became more interested in politics and started contributing a little to these sorts of threads.

Then my focus shifted towards philosophy and the rationality of faith.  I was annoyed both by the 'intellectual' attack on religion, and by the lack of response to this attack.  So I started reading lots of philosophy and now most of my posts are in the atheism/theism forum.  My interest in philosophy persists, and whilst it still is primarily in the philosophy of religion, I enjoy thinking about a variety of other topics as well.  My current project is The Atheist Delusion which is a work in progress.  When complete it will be (IMO) the best refutation of pop-atheism out there, bearing in mind its length (< 15,000 words), and given its breadth and direct interaction with the most common contemporary critiques of religion.

A few years ago I felt that I was spending too much time here, so made an official 'good bye' thread, thinking that telling everyone I was leaving would make me much less likely to come back.  It didnt work!  I came back a few weeks later. 

Whilst being a member I have been offered mod-ship twice, and turned down the offer both times primarily due to lack of time.

Over the years we have lost a number of quality posters.  A few that come to mind are fyst, Abbas, Path2Felicity and SadrasStudent.  We have also gained many quality posters, and I hope that they stick around long term.

Salam. Its been about 8 years for me. My brother, Ali Zaki (not active on the site anymore) got me into it. He was having debates with some Christians on the site re: Prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h). Since both me and my brother are reverts from a Christian background, we knew enough about the topic to have a debate. I haven't been active on the Islam/Christianity/Judaism forum in the last few years because, first, there aren't many Christians on this site, and the ones who are here are not really much into debating, they just keep posting the same dogma, nonsense,  and pre-sorted 'taking points' that they have been posting for years, so I got bored with that. So then I became active on Social/Family/Marriage. I act as sort of the SC 'guidance counselor', which is not the role I originally imagined, but I guess that's life. My offline life became very busy with work and family, so I don't have as much free time as I used to have, but I try to help when I can. 

I was asked to be a mod, I think in 2008, not sure exactly when, and I am still the laziest mod on SC, but I like to think I make up for it by my dashing good looks, looool.  :donno:

Not into double figures yet, but my current handle is in its 9th year so I hope I am counted in. For a record, however, I first joined ShiaChat in 2001, as IRC chatroom #shia, which soon became a discussion board in white and green colours. So in all I have been here for 13 years.

ShiaChat was one of the first websites I came across when I started using the internet and even after accounting for absences, it remains one of those first few sites I regularly visit.

I learned quite a lot during the first few years. One, it made me aware of the larger debate on contemporary issues, ideas, problems and schisms within Shi'ism - something I had no inkling of before I came here.

Eg, I didn't know there could be Shias anywhere in the world who viewed the leaders of the Islamic Revolution of Iran negatively. I didn't know about Usooli/Akhbari divide, or the debate about taqseer and ghuluw, or about mutah.

Two, the big majority of SCers since day 1 till now have been West-based who usually have plenty of opportunities in real life to meet and socialise, exchange ideas and make friends with a diverse group of Shias belonging to different ethnicities and nationalities. But for those of us who visited SC from their native countries (Pakistan in my case), to be able to talk to a diverse group of coreligionists from many different countries and ethnicities was a very unique and enthralling experience.

Three, I have learned to cultivate good akhlaq and SC has definitely helped in this regard. There are members here who will remember an ill-tempered and rude Marbles, bickering back and forth till the end of times. I no longer use ad hominems, name-calling, personal slurs or just plain foul talk as tools of debate, and I refuse to be drawn in when these are directed at me.

The site it self has gone through some major phases. In the last decade what I can recall clearly is that initially it was a very family-like place where a lot of us got to know each other very closely. That was when you had active members like Zain, SyedMed, So Solid Shia (and many many others). After that the site fell into what you can call a pseudo-Akhbari/Usooli phase where we had a lot of rebellion from the Indo-Pak Akhbaris (aka Malangs). You would usually have threads discussing the 3rd Shahadah in Adhan or Salat, discussions on Ayatullah Muhammad Hussain Najafi, Matam and other related subjects. Then you had a phase where this interest towards Ahadith and Rijal Sciences in general was evoked by certain members initially and the need to be well versed in our own material and books became a hot-topic; especially as things were being translated into English by members of this very site. During that phase we would also see some interesting debates on other subjects such as Philosophy, Ibn Arabi, Unity of Existence etc. Currently I am not active on the website, so I'm not sure what's going on, but I still see some influence of the last phase (after the climax it reached when one of the member became a Waqifi).

This is at least what was happening outside of the Political Discussion forums - I was never really active in there. Of course you would also occasionally have the hot topic pop up every now and then, related to any community incident that would take place, such as perhaps a lecture of a scholar, or issues with a relevant organization (television channel, mosque etc.).

10 years myself in December. Hadn't realized the anniversary until I saw this thread. Went on a long and strange arc over that time, which dates back initially to when I was only about 1 year in as a Muslim.

Started off spending a lot of time in the Shia-Sunni (though quickly grew tired of that) and the Muslim-Christian-Jewish forum. Learned a lot about Christianity and the Bible debating in that forum with crazy Evangelicals. Ultimately ended up understanding the Bible and appreciating the nicer parts of Christianity than before I was Muslim, ironically. Eventually learned what I had to learn from that and gained enough respect for the others to not want to spend more time on apologetics and polemics.

Later on, as I gained more knowledge and some confidence, and based on the mental conflicts of getting a grip on certain controversial material in Islam (with respect to contemporary morality). Went through a "modernist" phase, spent a lot of time in the Islamic Law sub-forum. As part of the debates for that, came into discussion with a lot of the people here emphasizing a renewed attention to our hadith sources and on going back to the sources, and on translating these materials into accessible English. My own sort of "modernist" point of view at that time also encouraged going back to the sources, though with a different emphasis, so oddly found some common ground with some of the hadith oriented folks. Got influenced a lot by those people, and now tend to take a less ego-driven approach, more geared toward understanding the Islamic system on its own terms, including the laws, rather than examining it through the light of outside ideas.

I haven't hit the one decade mark yet, but i'm not far off. 

I first visited SC after being informed about it by some older Shiite friends back in 2005. I had just started to take my religion and life a little bit more seriously and was looking for some spirituality and Shiite friends (all my friends were non-muslim, or Sunni). I had just come back from ziyaraat in Iran and was hyped about becoming more Shiite (being known by most people as someone who would always joke around, and as one of the most carefree people around), i came to SC looking to find serious discussions and hardcore Shiites that could help me develop myself. I was expecting a very serious environment, with everyone following strict shar`iah laws and had convinced myself to put my humor and 'street kid' attitude on hibernate mode. However, when i joined the site, i got the shock of my life. It was the most unserious place i had seen (i wasn't much of an internet guy, so had no idea what forums were usually like). I saw everything i was expecting not to see, to an extent that i thought, whats the difference between this shiite  muslim website and my local chicken and chip shop (where lots of guys and girls would meet up and be very Harami). So i left the site after a week.

A year later, the same Shiite friends that i would still meet every now and then would still be mentioning the site. I travelled with them to different centers around London and saw that they knew so many Shiites from everywhere (brothers & sisters obviously  ). I was surprised, and found out that it was all from online and university - Ahlulbayt societies (ABSOC), which boast a completely different story lol.

I decided to come back to SC, but this time with a much more relaxed mentality. So i joined with a new username, since i had forgotten my password for the older one. I now intended to be myself, and through jokes and sarcasm expose some of the hypocrisy i saw and at the same time learn more about the different shiite communities and benefit from the knowledgable/wise members lurking around. 

Just as i joined some great members were leaving, and the threads about how sc would never be the same without 'the greats' were countless. There were still some great members, and in my opinion it was a great period for SC. There was everything; comedy, controversy, religious debates and priceless wierdos. I really saw Shiites from all walks of life, some coming from worse personal (not family - i had it good in that sense) backgrounds than myself.

I spent hours a day on SC back then and made and even met many shiite friends. 

I became one of the famous spammers and also active in the controversial topics Ibn al-Hussain mentioned. It was a weird mix. The majority of my posts were in the off-topic forum and the family one?(my user name was The Guide). 

Again in 2009 i decided i had my fair share of SC and that it was enough immaturity on my part, so i decided to sign out and disappear slowly. I had made enough hijjabi friends to last me a earthly life time and decided i would now waste my time on facebook and msn (where i had most of my SC friends added). A friend found out and made me a goodbye thread (i wasn't planning on having one, because i had seen so many people return) so i was forced to leave. 

I left for a good year or two and returned at the end of 2010 because i had a few months free (so basically boredom). This time however, i told myself i will only make good use of SC and stick to serious forums. I made a personal commitment to stay away from the off-topic forum and other un-serious forums. I've been pretty good at it, i now generally only check the Quran, Hadith forum, general discussions some time and the Europe forum. 

After deciding to only make good use of the site, i realised how amazing it was. There is so much to learn from here. Sometimes indirectly. 

My experience on the site has been similar to Ibn al-Hussain.

The site when i joined was a lot warmer, more variety of people. It felt like one big family unit. I really can't express how great it was back then. I saw that over the years it became a lot more colder amongst other things.

I'm glad i was introduced to this site and learnt how to use it properly. 

I hope for the newer comers that the same environment can be created for them that we had in our days.

I now feel like an older member who just comes on occasionally when i have breaks. I used to come back just for the Hadith, Poetry and Europe forum, but lately i have gotten more active in other topics as well.

Sorry for the long post of me reminiscing to myself, i actually had to leave a lot of details out lol. I just saw older posters sharing, and being the loudmouth that i am, i couldn't help but share my experience to.

So a member linked me this thread and reading through it I felt that I should add my contribution.

I first came across ShiaChat in 2003 when I first started at University. After spending a year or so reading through the different sections of the forum I decided to sign up in 2004. Since then I had been a regular poster until 2011. I went through phases where I would take a break from the forum and not post and read only and sometimes completely stop which is what I did rather permanently from 2011 onwards.

I have been a mod a few times on the forum and have to say each period it was a different experience and a lot of that was due to the changes on the forum as time went on, something which has been highlighted by the other members above.

Looking back at my time on ShiaChat, I would say that it hasn't been all bad but it hasn't been fully productive either. I felt that I was pretty hot-headed on certain topics due to my opinion at that time which I no longer hold or have gone through a change since I started studying in-depth rather than relying on SC for information. I do believe though overall it was a good learning experience since it made me aware of many aspects of my religion which I was not aware about and at the same time highlighted many of the issues that are within the Shia Community as a whole and the different pattern of thoughts within the different communities.

Perhaps one of the reasons that I left SC was that I felt at times this forum was very polarising on issues, for example we were more concerned about our political stances more than our religious knowledge. We were ready to draw lines amongst ourselves rather than be tolerant or agree to disagree. I felt moreover that being having such a die hard attitude didn't help one progress spiritually. And I would happily admit that since changing my attitude on how I saw things it helped me understand our communities better and to work with them and to help them especially in Dundee, Scotland where I was based until recently.

Currently, I am as they say a number in the system and working away while at the same time being involved in a few projects however not on the scale as it was before where I worked with some organisations across UK. I find that we dream big, talk big but act very little or sometimes nothing at all so I started doing small things which I felt would help me develop my knowledge about the religion and then take it from there. I still plan on going to the Hawza inshallah and join Mr Spammer and some others out there.

One last thing I would leave as advice for the members who are here currently and the newer ones; use this site as a tool which will help you not hinder you. Spend time on here effectively, I use to spend hours and hours and I regret that a lot now since I realised so late that the importance of time. Time is ruthless, it does not come back or wait for anyone so utilise your time in a way that when you look back at your years on here or anywhere you find that it was productive and you learnt something worthwhile off here.

I don't know how long I've been here. I think it's 4 years or so? Something like that.

It's been a wild ride. I'm embarrassed by the sheer volume of c.rap I have written, although I will stand behind at least 99 percent of it.

I like shiachat not just for the discussions but the friendly atmosphere. I've met a lot of friends on here.

How the site has changed, and how I have changed!

I have been through patches of strong and weak faith, bitterness, confusion etc

The site is always a good read, however I wish they took up my suggestion of a "FAQ" style library of threads that answer the common questions, which would also be edited to have a very high standard of content. It would then serve as a good reference library.

It's been 8 years for me, and I am always amazed at the small amount or posts I have to my record.

I joined the forum at a period when salafis were getting very active in their filthy online propaganda (post Saddam Iraq), so basically this site was a haven of true shiism and it helped me a lot find serious and appropriate ressources, mostly on fiqh issues. Back then and before facebook I used to spend my time on SC and al-Islam.org for islamic topics.

Still love it, even though I am always disappointed by what seems to become the norm : people dont give the salam when they post. Come on guys this is an islamic place

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, as I observed the first baby steps of Al-Gore and those of the interwebz, I felt a great disturbance in the force and found it to be shiachat.

No wait, actually I used to be sane back in 2007. I was a gentleman. I had a job. I paid taxes. I wore under garments. I revered and respected people. I lived in a comfortable box like everyone else. I detested rickshaws and found bikes unworthy like everyone else. I used to use seat belts and commodes like a boss.

Then I found shiachat. It didn't change my life. I wasted too much on sunni/shia flexing and waving competitions on here. It helped me lose respect for humanity some more. It made me hate ourselves as a race some more. But shiachat is not to blame. Any other congregation of people would have had the same effect. Anyway, thats all.

I've been here awhile many years, maybe even 10? - I keep forgetting my password, and closing e-mail accounts so no way to recover... but always under the handle skylight ... lost password twice - so, now am skylight2.  Used to be pretty anti-IRI and everyone other than Ali Shariati... - (but that was b/4 I came on Shi'a Chat)  ... then I was told to read books by Allama Mutahhari and Imam Khomeini (or else...) - and I started to look into IRI, and also the ideological foundation of the Islamic Revolution. Now, am very much pro-IRI - but not pro- the Hashemi current. Which is in itself  interesting, 'cause before I would've been pro-Hashemi/Khatami etc. ... if I had not read and looked into the Islamic Revolution itself, and not just Iran.  There is no where really else to go... so am here, still... if there were a more focused forum, that was active and people participated, I might go there... but since there is not, am here...

Salam. Beginning in 2002, once or twice a year I would google Imam Mahdi AJ and it would lead me to a topic at ShiaChat. I would read the topic and feel energized, but close the link and go back to my real life. I didn't understand that ShiaChat was a website with different forums and a bazillion topics. In 2005 I realized that ShiaChat was my own special place to escape to, and I loved it. It wasn't until 2010 that I got brave enough to join and reply in threads. In November 2014, right after Notme became a Moderator, I was asked to be a Mod. There are a lot of smart, helpful, and funny people here. Because of things we see in our local news, as well as disasters like Covid-19, Ukraine and Gaza, I often feel like the world is on fire. I am so grateful that ShiaChat is still here for us. My prayers for the Team members who keep this site running. Prayers for everyone, including the guests.

Prior to 2015, I spent most of my time on sunni/salafi sites and channels starting with AOL groups way, way back in the day. Came to ShiaChat when someone asked me to answer a question from a Quranist 

I was very active from 2015 to 2019 but then a very turned off from ShiaChat due to run in with a few veteran members and mods...but that's another story for another day.

made a few friends here and lots of enemies. been suspended countless times for picking fights, being rude (they deserved it ), being obnoxious and probably a few other adjectives.

Oops! I never knew this thread exists. I only missed my 10 year anniversary by a few months, oh and my 10 year anniversary as a Shia, lol! 

Scrolling up and seeing all those old names reminds me of the good time I had here before I took a really long break. It’s a shame most of those people are gone and that the chat room doesn’t even exist. 

I started off as someone full of doubts and confusion, helped by the amazing people here, made a few really good friends and loads of good memories. It’s a shame though, it feels like coming back home after so many years and the family I once knew isn’t here anymore :’) 

But I’m glad that the OP along with other mods are keeping this place alive. Thanks a bunch, you awesome people!

I still enjoy visiting the forum from time to time, though I must admit that in my times it used to be much more active :(. Hope you still continue sharing nice recipes and discussing politics and philosophy :P. Also I hope that in these terrible individualistic and selfish times full of cruelty and ignorance, we continue developing with discipline and faith the good values and teachings that our dearest people taught us and that God allowed us to understand.

Salaam, how would you say things are now since 2024 would be an additional, 10 year later data point? (Im mostly curious to see if the "external factors that influence humans" part has continued to negatively affect things here or if they seem the same or really, just anything.
