Salam I did the whole Google site search of SC. Wilayah has posted some very helpful material. I have also seen (you might have to copy-paste the URL) http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en&q=cache:3jMABu0m00cJ:http://www.imamreza.net/eng/imamreza.php . My biggest complaint with it is that the footnotes are not listed, so there are no references. When I get more time, perhaps I could try to Google each citation, but #Unsure.

Bump. Please help. I know that materials exist out there supporting hijab.

Salamun alaykum.

On modesty:

- Chapter al-Nur, Verse 30-31:

Tell the faithful men to cast down their looks and to guard their private parts. That is more decent for them. Allah is indeed well aware of what they do.

And tell the faithful women to cast down their looks and to guard their private parts, and not to display their charms, except for what is outward, and let them draw their scarfs over their bosoms, and not display their charms except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers" sons, or their sisters" sons, or their women, or their slave girls, or male dependants lacking] sexual [desire, or children uninitiated to women's parts. And let them not thump their feet to make known their hidden ornaments. Rally to Allah in repentance, O faithful, so that you may be felicitous.

- Chapter al-Nur, Verse 33:

Those who cannot afford marriage should be continent until Allah enriches them out of His grace.

- Narrations:

Imam Ali (a) said, “The best of worships is modesty”

Imam Baqir (a) said, “No worship has higher value for God than controlling one’s stomach
and lust”

Imam Ali (a) said, “Modesty is the lead and base of all goodness”

Imam Ali (a) said, “The intellectual are modest”

Salam alaykum

I remember hearing about ahadith in which the face and hands are specified. Does anyone have access to anything like that?

The Prophet Muhammad said,

"After Islam, there is no benefit for a Muslim man better than a Muslim wife. She makes him happy when he sees her, she fulfills his requests, and she protects herself (modesty) and his property when he is absent."

(Tahdheeb al-Ahkam)

Imam Ja`far as-Sadiq [a] said,

"Modesty is from faith, and faith is in Paradise."

(al-Kafi, Volume 2, Book 1, Chapter 48, #1)

The Messenger of Allah said,

"Islam by itself is like one without clothes. Its cover is modesty, its decoration is serenity, its generosity is a righteous deed, and its pillar is piety. And, for everything there is a root, and the root of Islam is the love of us, the Ahl al-Bayt."

(Al-Kāfi, V.2, P.46, H.1)

When Lady Fatima [a] set out to deliver her sermon on Fadak, she wrapped her scarf around her head, covered herself in her cloak, surrounded herself with her family and women from her community, and stepped on the ends of her dress. Her walk was no different than the walking of the Messenger of Allah . Then, she entered upon Abi Bakr, who was in a gathering of the Muhajireen, the Ansar, and others. She requested that a curtain be placed before her, and then she sat behind it.

@Freedom2B Dr. Mohammad Ali Shomali, the man who wrote the article you posted, has a journal article at al-islam.org website. Perhaps some of the same info is there.

Salam, one of those was really helpful!

Umm Salamah, the wife of the Holy Prophet, (s) said: One day Maymunah and I were with Prophet Muhammad (s) and Ibn Umm Maktum who was blind came to see the Prophet (s). The Prophet (s) asked us to have our hijab. We said: “O Apostle of God! Ibn Maktum is blind and is not able to see us”. The Prophet (s) said: “Aren’t you able to see him?”4

3. See e.g. Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 10, p. 261. 4. Ibid., vol. 101, p. 37.

The one thing that I would want is a cross-referencing to see how Majlisi pictured hijab in his mind.

I do want more ahadith, of course. Thank you all!

Al-Fudayl bin Yasar asked Imam as-Sadiq (a.s.) about the forearms of a woman: whether they are included in the “beauty” as described by the Almighty when He says, “and they should not display their beauty except for their husbands...” The Imam replied, “Yes, and what is beneath the veil covering the head (khimar) is from the beauty [as mentioned in the verse], and also what is beneath the wristbands.”3 As one can clearly see in this authentic hadith, the Imam has exempted the face and the hands, but everything else has been counted as “the beauty that should not be displayed except for their husbands...”

Abu Nasr al-Bazinli quotes Imam ‘Ali as-Rida (a.s.) as follows: “A woman does not have to cover her head in the presence of a boy who has not yet reached the age of puberty.”4 The implication of this statement is obvious that once a boy who is not related to a woman reaches the age of puberty, she has to cover her head in his presence.
