Alawite is a cultural designation, not a religious one.  There are Shi'a Alawites, Sunni Alawites, and Atheist Alawites.  Traditionally they have been ghulat Shi'as but more recently Alawites have been other religions and still considered themselves Alawite.  I imagine that Bashar al-Assad is pretty secular and that he's only praying it as a tradition, but only Allah (swt) knows what is in his heart.

Asaamu alaykum

Well, first of all, is Assad not a Allewi? If no, he may have changed to maybe sunni-islam, because it seems, that he may pray like that way.

Well according to what Syrian Sister said here on SC a few years back, Bashar nominally became Sunni when he became president.

I am supposing this is out of respect for the majority Sunni population of Syria.

Imagine the king of Bahrain praying the Shia way. Inconceivable.

From what I've read of them the Alawites dont think its necessary to have a physical ritual of prayer. They're an ultra-esoteric sect.  Bashar is just praying the Sunni way out of respect for the majority of his citizens. Doesnt mean hes stopped being an Alawite.
