DOES THE QURAN DISRESPECT THE SAHABA?

The verses of Quran address the companions (sahaba) of the prophet saww in different tone which include praising, warning and taunting that they may turn back from Islam. These are true facts which are exposed by the Quran for believers. The discussion on this matter is detailed below:

1.      For the First Tone of Quran Praising the companions (sahaba) the following verses can be quoted:

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah ; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers - so that Allah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward. (48:29)

In the above verse Allah swt has mentioned that he has promised for those as given below:

Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.”

These are the companions who are believers and forgiveness and great reward (paradise) has been promised from them. The above verse indicates that this promise is only for the believers doing the righteous deeds and it excludes those who do not perform the righteous deeds.

For this faction of the Companions promised paradise, Quran has more verses in their praise:

But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision. (8;74)

The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah . And it is those who are the attainers [of success]. (9:20)

Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring pleasure. (9:21)

These are those who believed in Allah swt, believed in the Prophet (PBUH&HF), and gave all they could for the sake of Islam.  These are the highest in rank. These companions ALWAYS supported the Prophet and were WITH him. They never disobeyed him in every other issue, nor did they ever accused him of talking non-sense! (may Allah protect us).

2.      For the Second Tone of Quran Warning the Companions (sahaba) the following verses are quoted:

O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allah , you adhere heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a [very] little. (9:38)

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. And Allah is over all things competent. (9;39)

This is a clear indication that some of the companions were lazy during the call to Jihad and other activities, and, thus, deserved the above reprimand by Allah swt. This is not the only instance where Allah swt threatened to replace them:

Here you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allah - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allah is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away, He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you. (47:38)

O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. (49:2)

But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you (prophet) standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers." (62:11)

These are few verses where Quan has used Warning tone to address the believers who falls below to perform righteous deeds.

3.      For the Third Tone of Quran Taunting the Companions (sahaba) who may turn away from the religion, the following verses are quoted:

These are actually hypocrites (Al-munafiqeen) who were among the companions. The Quran has one complete Sura “Al-Munafiqqon, No. 63” to address them. Also, the following verses describe them:

Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful. (3:144)

This verse was revealed when some of the companions ran away from the battle of Uhud, when they falsely heard that Prophet was killed. Although they were forgiven by Prophet later, but the above verse gives a possibility that some of the companions may abandon Islam if the Prophet (PBUH&HF) dies. But Allah swt makes exceptions: of the “grateful” ones.

Allah also states:

O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion - Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble toward the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favor of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. (5:54)

It is a known fact that the companions quarreled after the death of the Prophet (PBUH&HF), and wars were waged.  The fact, again and again, that the companions were divided is illuminated by Allah swt in the following verse:

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful. And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment. (3:104, 105)

The above verse shows among the companion there were a group (Ummah) who will remain righteous. The verse emphasizes that this Ummah is AMONG THEM so it does not cover all of them. However. the latter part the verse describes the group who were turned back on their faith after the Prophet (PBUH&HF) died   (Ref. Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 76, Hadith 585, English Translation).  The verse indicates that on the Day of Judgment, there will be two factions: one with white-lit faces, and the other with black-lit faces; that's another hint that the companions will be divided.

Here are some more verses from the Quran that address the group of companions who has been warned in the Quran for their actions:

They swear by Allah that they did not say [anything against the Prophet] while they had said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their [pretense of] Islam and planned that which they were not to attain. And they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them of His bounty. So if they repent, it is better for them; but if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. And there will not be for them on earth any protector or helper. (9:74)

So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allah in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie. (9:77)

The bedouins (Arabs) are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allah has revealed to His Messenger. And Allah is Knowing and Wise. (9:97)

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray. (4:60)

In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie. (2:10)

Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth? And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient. (57:16)

There may be some translations which state that the above verse is meant to address the Jews and the Christians.  That is not true, because it contradicts the verse itself. First, Allah swt is addressing the companions and THEN comparing them to the Jews and the Christians.  How then could it be that Allah swt tells the Jews and the Christians: " Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah..."  and then tell them: "...and And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before,..."  Why would Allah swt compare the Christians (or the Jews) to themselves?   No, and Allah swt doesn't contradict Himself   Rather, the verse was revealed as a questioning by Allah swt regarding some of the Muhajiroon (the Immigrants), who 17 years after the Quran was revealed, had still not fully believed in their HEARTS. Allah swt as a result, showed disapproval. Again, at the end, Allah points out that among them are many defiantly disobedient.

Conclusion:

We have seen that Quran addresses the groups of companions (Sahaba) in different tones including praising, warning and taunting that they may turn away from religion. Thus in this manner when Quran categorizes the sahaba we believe that truth is revealed in Quran.

Thanks brother for kind response.

This article makes it clear that Quran does not consider the sahaba of equal rank, it categorizes them in three groups, those have been detailed in the thread.

The quran does not consider that categorization as any disrespect for sahaba, because it prasies warns and taunts them too for their actions.

Brother you can check from tafseers many are there.

But the problem is that you only accept what is written in praise and neglect that part warns and taunts them.

Disrespect is showing the opposite of respect, respect in turn is for respected people. What respect a hypocrite and enemy of Ahl al-Bayt can possibly have? In fact  Allah curses and condemns those who; "afront Allah and His Apostle", and those who; "malign Allah and His Apostle," and those who; "speak evil things about Allah and His Apostle," and those who; "annoy Allah and His Apostle," and those who "defy Allah and His Apostle," and those who; "disobey Allah and His Apostle" such people have no respect to be disrespected. You can find all these characteristics in the so called Companions revered by our opponents.

There is no doubt that Saqeefa was a full Military Coup D'etate, they took over the Khilafat while Prophet's body was still unburied, and then a few hundreds of them with swords and fire attacked the House of Prophethood and terrorized the Ahl al-Bayt and murdered the Daughter of Prophet and Her unborn child, then they arrested the appointed and legitimate Imam and Caliph and brought him to the Mosque with a rope on His neck. Such people are cursed by Allah and His Messenger, and we should curse them too. (Reminds me of what happened to Shaheed Sheikh Hassan Shehata in Egypt, BUT Saqeefa was worse because Imam al-Sadeq said; "For us the Ahl al-Bayt, the tragedy of Zahra is greater than the tragedy of Karbala."

For Sahaba, Quran insults some, praises some, calls some with whom Allah is pleased, calls some Kuffar, and calls some Munifiqeen and yet predicts some to be going to eternal hell (hum fiha Khalidoon).

It's only the Prophet Ahlulbayt (Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Hussain) for whom Quran is alway all praise, all blessing., and all example. Over 300 ayaat documented just in praise of Imam Ali (as).

The Quran addresses the companions in three tones ie praising, warning and taunting that they may turn from the religion, thus divides them into three groups as already quoted above:

1-    The First group addressed by Quran as believers, and they are righteous. Quran praises them.

All Muslims respect them as Quran praises them.

2-    The Second Group addressed by Quran as believers and they are not sincere in their actions. Quran warns them.

The believers are companions, they are similarly addressed as in the verses for the first group, but they are warned for their actions.

Authentic Sunni traditions confirm that there have been some companions who used to oppose the Prophet's order and quarrel with him in several occasions:

a) There was the issue of the captives of the battle "Badr" that the  Prophet ordered their freedom for payment of the ransom money (Fidyah),  and these companions went against it.

b) There was the battle of "Tabook" that the Prophet ordered to slaughter the camels, to save their lives, and the same people went against it.

c) There was the treaty of "Hudabiyyah" that the Prophet wanted to make  peace with people of Mecca, and the very same companions went against it and they even cast doubt about the prophethood of Muhammad (PBUH&HF).

d) There was the battle of "Hunain" where they accused the Prophet of injustice in distributing the war booty.

e) There was the appointment of "Usamah Ibn Zayd" who was assigned as the leader of Islamic army by the Prophet, and these companions disobeyed  the order to follow him.

f) There was a tragic Thursday when the Messenger of Allah wanted to state  his will, and the very same companions accused him of talking non-sense  and prevented him to do so.

And there are many more of such reports which can be even found in Sahih al-Bukhari for the actions of this second group.

3.    The Third Group addressed by Quran who are hypocrites (Munafiqeen) among sahaba they may turn away from religion. Quran taunts them.

I quote one verse confirming the presence of hypocrites (munafiqeen) among the sahaba:

And among those around you of the Arabs (Bedouins) are hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They have become accustomed to hypocrisy. You, [O Muhammad], do not know them, [but] We know them. We will punish them twice [in this world]; then they will be returned to a great punishment. (9:101)

Allah talks about the hypocrites in this verse who are around the Prophet who pretend to be his sincere companions and even Prophet does not know them according to the above verse.

I quote hereby few authentic traditions from Sahih Al-bukhari those confirm the turning of them from religion and becoming apostate.

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 578:

Narrated 'Abdullah:

The Prophet said, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount." 'Abdullah added: The Prophet said, "Iam your predecessor at the Lake-Fount, and some of you will be brought in front of me till I will see them and then they will be taken away from me and I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' It will besaid, 'You do not know what they did after you had left.'

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 584:

Narrated Anas:

The Prophet said, "Some of my companions will come to me at my Lake Fount, and after I recognize them, they will then be taken away from me, whereupon I will say, 'My companions!' Then it will be said, 'You do not know what they innovated (new things) in the religion after you."

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 585:

Narrated Abu Hazim from Sahl bin Sa'd:

The Prophet said, "I am your predecessor (forerunner) at the Lake-Fount, and whoever will pass by there, he will drink from it and whoever will drink from it, he will never be thirsty. There will come to me some people whom I will recognize, and they will recognize me, but a barrier will be placed between me and them." Abu Hazim added: An-Nu'man bin Abi 'Aiyash, on hearing me, said. "Did you hear this from Sahl?" I said, "Yes." He said, " I bear witness that I heard Abu Said Al-Khudri saying the same, adding that the Prophet said: 'I will say: They are of me (i.e. my followers). It will be said, 'You do not know what they innovated (new things) in the religion after you left'. I will say, 'Far removed, far removed (from mercy), those who changed (their religion) after me." Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection a group of companions will come to me, but will be driven away from the Lake-Fount, and I will say, 'O Lord (those are) my companions!' It will be said,'You have no knowledge as to what they innovated after you left; they turned apostate as renegades (reverted from Islam)."

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 586:

Narrated Ibn Al-Musaiyab:

The companions of the Prophet said, "Some men from my companions will come to my Lake-Fount and they will be driven away from it, and I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' It will be said, 'You have no knowledge of what they innovated after you left: they turned apostate as renegades (reverted from Islam).

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 587:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "While I was sleeping, a group (of my followers were brought close to me), and when I recognized them, a man (an angel) came out from amongst (us) me and them, he said (to them), 'Come along.' I asked, 'Where?' He said, 'To the (Hell) Fire, by Allah' I asked, 'what is wrong with them' He said, 'They turned apostate as renegades after you left.' Then behold! (Another) group (of my followers) were brought close to me, and when I recognized them, a man (an angel) came out from (me and them) he said (to them); Come along.' I asked, "Where?' He said, 'To the (Hell) Fire, by Allah.' I asked, What is wrong with them?' He said, 'They turned apostate as renegades after you left. So I did not see anyone of them escaping except a few who were like camels without a shepherd."

Volume 8, Book 76, Number 592:

Narrated Asma 'bint Abu Bakr:

The Prophet said, "I will be standing at the Lake-Fount so that I will see whom among you will come to me; and some people will be taken away from me, and I will say, 'O Lord, (they are) from me and from my followers.' Then it will be said, 'Did you notice what they did after you? By Allah, they kept on turning on their heels (turned as renegades).' " The sub-narrator, Ibn Abi Mulaika said, "O Allah, we seek refuge with You from turning on our heels, or being put to trial in our religion."

Volume 9, Book 88, Number 172:

Narrated Asma':

The Prophet said, "I will be at my Lake-Fount (Kauthar) waiting for whoever will come to me. Then some people will be taken away from me whereupon I will say, 'My followers!' It will be said,'You do not know they turned Apostates as renegades (deserted their religion).'" (Ibn Abi Mulaika said, "Allah, we seek refuge with You from turning on our heels from the (Islamic) religion and from being put to trial").

Volume 9, Book 88, Number 173:

Narrated 'Abdullah:

The Prophet said, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount (Kauthar) and some men amongst you will be brought to me, and when I will try to hand them some water, they will be pulled away from me by force whereupon I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' Then the Almighty will say, 'You do not know what they did after you left, they introduced new things into the religion after you.'"

Volume 9, Book 88, Number 174:

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd:

I heard the Prophet saying, "I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount (Kauthar), and whoever will come to it, will drink from it, and whoever will drink from it, will never become thirsty after that.

There will come to me some people whom I know and they know me, and then a barrier will be set up between me and them." Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri added that the Prophet further said: "I will say those people are from me. It will be said, 'You do not know what changes and new things they did after you.' Then I will say, 'Far removed (from mercy), far removed (from mercy), those who changed (the religion) after me! "

These traditions are in conformity with the given verse that Allah says His Prophet that "You do not know these companions, we know them and we will punish them".

sahaba

The term sahaba used by the Sunnis dont exist in the Quran and never used by our Prophet (sawa). The term "sahaba" itself is a big biddah. There is only the Prophet (sawa), the Ahlul Bayt, Muhajirun & Ansar. Muhajirun are divided into two groups, one is the early converts who were the cream, the finest early Muslims. Then there was the other group of Muhajirun who were later converts. They however do not include the Makkan pagans who surrendered after the conquest of Makka Mukarrama.

The proto-sunnis decided to include Muawiya, therefore they coined the term Sahaba to include all people who had seen the Prophet (sawa) and believed in him. There is no single hadith to support this definition. The very root of their sahaba world-view is flawed and fault lines run deep endangering the prestige of Islam.

So called massive Ahlul Sunnah, take a large chunk of their ahadith from people who were not proper companion, they were as young as 18-20 able to narrate thousands of "accurate" ahadith directly from the Prophet (sawa)  after his demise is a great surprise in itself:

1) Abu Huraira (2 years companionship but narrated 5,000 over ahadith)

2) Anas bin Malik (a servant of our Prophet (sawa) who was barely 20 years)

3) Ayesha ( an over ambitious wife with political aspiration was merely 20 years)

4) ibn Umar (also was in his 20-s)

5) ibn Abbas (same)

Apart from ibn Abbas for whom the Shi'as also rely heavily, Ibn Umar is reputed to be accurate in his narrations unlike others. The point is this they were mere teenagers or young adults, the whole of Ahlul Sunnah rests on these individuals. How misleading. What more creating a sahaba worldview which is neither mentioned in the Quran nor Ahadith.

DOES THE QURAN DISRESPECT THE SAHABA?

Conclusion:

We have seen that Quran addresses the groups of companions (Sahaba) in different tones including praising, warning and taunting that they may turn away from religion. Thus in this manner when Quran categorizes the sahaba we believe that truth is revealed in Quran.

My friend, its right that Quran speaks highly about Sahaba Kiraam RA. Best among them are Muhajireen. Best among Muhajireen are Assabiqoon al Awaloon. Best among them are who participated in Badar and other battles along side Prophet SAW. We believe the best of all are the 4 Caliphs May Allah be pleased with them all.
