That quotation on the word "Islam" is added by the news paper for them not to insult/offend Islam.  That might of made you  think it was "so-called Islam".

But the main body of the article where Assad was quoted the quotation marks were not there.

This is a common practice (to use quotations) when Arab media report Islam being criticised to state that they do not agree with such statements.

Many Arab commentators in the media (especially Islamists) have stated that it is ironic for Assad to say this while allying with Iran and Hizb.

Do you read Arabic? Because I saw some Arabic outlets inserting "so-called".

Yes I do read Arabic, can you provide the exact phrase used? The original source and other sources did not have the "so-called" phrase.

The use of the word is clearly against all use of Islam in politics as Ba'thist see no role in religion in politics regardless of sect.

In his answer he states that religion is above politics and religion should be separated from politics.

He then emphasis that religion (all and any religion) should not be used in politics in favor of one group against another, and that anyone who uses religion in politics will fall anywhere in the world.

If Assad believed in VW or in the Iranian Islamic republic, he would of structured Syria similarly. But him and his party see no role for religion in politics.

I hope everyone has realized that Bashar al Assad does not care about Islam. Amazingly enough, there are many who try justify his statement by believe that Bashar taghuti assad was only talking about The MB..

so naive

Call whatever you call them... just to trick yourself!!!!

But, the main discussion is the political movements such as those in Egypt, Syria, Libya, Saudi and, and........

They even made it so clear where their party leaders alongside the president joined the rally and declared their position, the next day they dragged and slaughtered 4 Shias in their houses and on their streets.

Yeah. bcause Assad love shia political islam....

Please differentiate between "religion" and "religious values", such as "Islam" vs "Islamic

values".

The religious values are actually universal moral standards, just as mentioned here, such as fairness, respect of human life, truthfulness, etc. It doesn't mean only "Islamic" or any other religion-based government can implement this since the universal nature of these values. In fact, any normal government, including the secular one, will agree that these values should be upheld.

On the other hand, any religious-based government has 1 serious potential flaw: they tend to consider "their interpretation of religion" to the "religion" itself, therefore any other incompatible interpretations will be considered an attack to the religion instead of just different interpretation of the same religion. That's why your best bet is actually a secular but ethical government, especially if the country is quite diverse. Iran is actually an exception of this, perhaps because Shi'i in general is minority in Islam so they try to avoid this pitfall. But, in other religious-backed country, this is actually prevalent. Even in the countries where the Sunni muslimin are the majority but the government is weak in protecting the right of the minorities, we are seeing prosecution of the minorities, such as what happen to Shi'i in Egypt and Indonesia.

Assad: Arab Identity Returns to Its Right Position after Brotherhood Fall

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that the “Arab identity starts to return to its right position after the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood and disclosing the reality of the trends that use the religion for its narrow interests.”

In an interview published by Syrian daily, al-Baath, Assad said what he had meant by the term of “Political Islam” are those parties which take advantage of religion. The Brotherhood "takes advantage of religion and uses it as a mask... and it thinks that if you don't agree with it politically, that means you don't stand by God", said Assad.

He pointed out that "this is not the case with Iran and Hezbollah," he added. Hezbollah "does not judge people based on religion or sect, but rather on patriotism and politics," said Assad.

One must "distinguish between those who use religion for the benefit of a few, and those who use religion to defend causes that are just and right," the Syrian leader said.

On the other hand, Assad considered as unrealistic talks that workers, who are seen as the popular base of the Baath party, are those who turn against the party.

He stressed that “those defending the nation now are the workers and farmers... some of them are in the army, others defending their land.”

"The struggle now is between those who are ignorant and those who are aware, between the patriots and the collaborators, between extremists and moderates,” President Assad said.

Commenting on the reshuffle made y the Baath party this week, the Syrian leader said that the real role of the party’s central committee is to hold accountable the leaders on a regular basis, noting that “this did not happen in recent years.”

The central committee should "monitor the leadership's work, evaluate it and hold the leaders accountable", added Assad.

Earlier on Monday the Baath party announced the names of 16 new leaders, which included none of the party's former chiefs with the exception of Assad, who will remain secretary general.
