3 Troops Martyred, Several Hurt in Clashes with Asir Supporters in Abra

Two army officers and a soldier were martyred Sunday in a clash with supporters of Islamist cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir in the Sidon suburb of Abra, the Army Command said in a statement."An armed group loyal to Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir attacked, for no reason, a Lebanese army checkpoint in the village of Abra" on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon, it said."Two officers and a soldier were martyred, while several others were wounded. Several military vehicles were damaged," the statement added. The fighting erupted when Asir supporters surrounded an army checkpoint in Abra, where a vehicle transporting other supporters of the cleric had been stopped, a security source told Agence France Presse."After the armed men attacked (the army) with gunfire" the army fired back, the source added.LBCI television said the clash in Sidon allegedly erupted over the army's arrest of two individuals linked to the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque. The army vowed it "will not tolerate" the latest developments, and that it "will continue to fulfil its mandate to suppress strife."The military will "strike back with an iron fist anyone who... spills the blood of the army", the statement added.Earlier on Sunday, al-Jadeed television said "First Lieutenant Samer Tannous and Nicola al-Nashef" were among the army's martyrs.Future TV said "an army officer was killed while three army troops, seven Asir supporters and two civilians were wounded."OTV said "Asir's gunmen widened their attacks and are firing towards Haret Saida from Abra.""An RPG landed in the Alman area in Sidon district and a citizen identified as J. D. was wounded," al-Jadeed said."Sniper gunfire is targeting every military vehicle that passes in the vicinity of Abra and all roads linking the South to Beirut have been blocked by masked supporters of Ahmed al-Asir," military sources told MTV.Al-Jadeed said the army came under sniper fire on Sidon's seaside road and "masked gunmen are trying to block roads near the Hariri mosque.""The army reopened the Sidon-Beirut corniche road and is chasing the gunmen who blocked it," al-Mayadeen television said.Agence France Presse reported that explosions were heard two kilometers away.An AFP correspondent saw civilians fleeing the fighting, both by car and on foot.Businesses in Abra closed for the day in the face of the raging gunfire."The shells are raining down on us, and there is intense gunfire," a witness told AFP by telephone.

Hopefully this will be the end of al asir chapter.

I hope Assir is caught and arrested for high treason.

Before these salafis turn lebanon into another Syria, the Lebanese army should annihilate them.

The news was saying that some of the trouble makers are not even Lebanese nationals.

There is no better excuse to put an end to the trouble of these Salafists.

If the Lebanese government and the Mustaqbal party have any honour, they will not allow the murder of army men to go unpunished!!

This is going to put them all in an awkward position now, inshaAllah this will have the effect of unwillingly forcing them into actually doing the right thing for once.

Today is the end of Assir and his lot

Fighting rages in s. Lebanon, 5 soldiers killed

ABRA/BEIRUT, Lebanon: At least five soldiers and two gunmen loyal to an anti-Hezbollah sheikh were killed Sunday in clashes in Abra, east of Sidon, security sources said, in an act the Army deemed as a cold-blooded attack on the military which called for an “iron fist” approach to deter further aggression.

The sources said 19 other soldiers were wounded in the fighting that erupted after 2 p.m. and continued with growing ferocity throughout the evening hours of the day. The five fatalities among the military include three officers, the sources said.

The fighting, which the Army said was reminiscent of events preceding Lebanon’s 1975-90 Civil War, highlighted the increasing impact of the conflict in Syria on its western neighbor.

The Army said three of its members, including two officers, were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the Abra-Sidon area.

“Without any reason, an armed group belonging to Sheikh Ahmad Assir attacked an Army checkpoint in Abra-Sidon, killing two officers and a private; and wounding several others in addition to destroying several military vehicles,” the statement said.

The sources said the military post, located on the road to Abra - not far from the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque where Assir preaches – was struck by rocket-propelled grenades.

Assir calls on supporters

to join Sidon battle

Sunni Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir called on his supporters across Lebanon to join the battle currently raging in Sidon, as well as for the defection of soldiers from the Lebanese army.

“I call on all our supporters in Lebanese regions to come defend our religion, our pride, our women,” Assir said in a YouTube video published on Sunday.

The Salafi cleric stated: “We are being attacked by the Lebanese army, which is an Iranian army, and we are also being attacked by [Hezbollah leader] Hassan Nasrallah and [Amal Movement leader] Nabih Berri’s supporters.”

“We are being shelled from the Shiite area of Mar Elias. We are being shelled by all kinds of bombs, missiles and rocket launchers,” he added.

He continued: “I demand all our supporters to come down and close roads, and I call on all honorable members of the army, Sunnis and non-Sunnis, to leave the army immediately.”

Assir also called on all his expatriate supporters “to head to the Lebanese embassy in their country and stage protests.”

Clashes erupted early Sunday afternoon in southern Lebanon's Sidon after supporters of Sunni Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir attacked the Lebanese army following the LAF’s arrest of Assir’s bodyguard Fadi Beirouti and his brother-in-law.

Last week, deadly clashes erupted in Sidon between supporters of Sunni cleric Ahmad al-Assir and alleged Hezbollah loyalists, after an attack on a vehicle belonging to Assir’s brother.

The firebrand Sunni cleric rose to prominence for his outspoken opposition to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his calls for disarming Hezbollah.

This is a very dangerous situation. I think everyone should just pull back and let the army handle this. They will punish those involved but we should be careful of having this widen beyond this specific incident. Saida is a powder keg right now and this could easily spill over into other cities and become a civil war. Assir should be arrested or deported from Lebanon. This would be an act of treason in any country in the world. I also agree with what others said, that if the Sunnis is Lebanon want to live in peace and security in their country, they need to denounce clowns like Assir publically and not cooperate with them in any way.

^The more you sit back and watch, the more Takfiri gunmen to take over Lebanon, especially now that they are teaming up with Palestinian Takfiris... Hizb or Amal at least need to take a strong action against the forces of fitna... kill them in 100s in a few days, then they will hide... they know nothing but the language of force.

This won't work in Lebanon, IMO. It will only widen the conflict and give them an excuse to open up a full fledged front in Lebanon in order to distract from what is going on in Syria. The Lebanese Army has been dealing with these group for more than 30 years. They know how to handle them. Hezb could wipe them out in 1/2 a day, but this would probably lead to another civil war. That's why they are staying out of this, which is the intelligent thing to do at this point.
