Origination Of Sperms (Quran 86:6-7)

A christian has asked me that Why Quran has mentioned that male sperms originate from between the back and the ribs. I could not answer him because of my little knowledge. Any one can help?

خُلِقَ مِنْ مَاءٍ دَافِقٍ {6}

يَخْرُجُ مِنْ بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَائِبِ {7}

[Shakir 86:6] He is created of water pouring forth,

[Shakir 86:7] Coming from between the back and the ribs.

Ali Unal states that this refers to both the mechanism of ejection of the seminal fluid and the zone from which it is emitted.

These 2 verse are very interesting, because if this interpretation is correct, it shows yet again how superior the scientific understanding of the Quran.

This is the key part. Focus on verse 6 first. What is the second last word? water right? Not sperm (nutfa is sperm). And what's the last word: daafiq, which literally means sterile (this word is also used to describe a vasectomy). So this verse is talking about water which is sterile and free of sperm.

Verse 7 is talking about water which is free of sperm, which comes from a place between the ribs and the back. The ribs represent the front of the human body, and the backbone obviously represents the back of the body. so this sterile water is being said to come from inside the main body cavity. Testicles are hanging around in the scrotum (this is because the lower temperature there is ideal for spermatogenesis). Technically, testis aren't in the main body cavity.

So where can you find sterile water (ie free from sperm) in the main body cavity? the prostate and seminal vesicles, both located in the pelvis

Thus, these 2 verses are talking about the main creation of man from water, and also shows that the fluid that comes from the inside of body's main cavity is sperm free.

Or maybe I got the meaning of the verses totally wrong. As always, Allah (SWT) knows best

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.

There are many different ideas for the commentary of the terms /sulb/ 'backbone' and /tara'ib/ 'ribs', as mentioned in this verse, where the fluid comes forth from between them. In these ideas the commentators mostly try to comment on these two terms referring to man and woman from which the egg and sperm form the foetus.

But, primarily it should be noted that the verse is speaking only about a man's fluid, because 'a drop emitted' belongs to a man not to a woman since that of a woman does not emit and it says that the gushing fluid is so that:

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.

Then, it is not appropriate to bring woman into this discussion. It is better to say that the Qur'an points to one of the two main parts of the life-germ, viz: a man's seed, which is understandable to all;. And 'backbone' and 'ribs' are a man's back and front; the area between which his fluid comes from.

This is a clear commentary and the meanings of the terms simply conform to what is found in a dictionary. Meanwhile, there may be greater facts hidden in the verse that modern science has not found yet, however, scientists may uncover them in the future.

Sulb means hard,strong,rigid, stiff,tough,robust,sturdy or hardy.

Sulb : hardest of the stones

Sulb (singular) : sacrum bone (holy bone) because sacrum bone is hardest of the bones

Sacrum is wedge-shaped triangular bone at the base of the vertebral column. It is largest and the densest bone

of the vertebral column, and slowest to decay after death.

Taraaib (plural) : Pairs of organs

Al-taraaib is derived from turab meaning dust grains. In the sense that dust grains are equal.

In the dictionary , Al-taraaib is used to refer to  the body parts which are in pairs.

Pairs of eyes, hands and legs  together referred as a “taraaib”

Ribs come in pair. Right and left sides  of each pair are exactly the same so pairs of ribs is referred as a “taraaib”.

There are  two hip bones, one on the left side of the body  and other on the right. Each hip bone  is made  of three bones, the illium,pubis  and ischium.

So here pairs of  illium,pubis and ischium bones can be referred to as  “taraaib”

Area between the sacrum bone and Pairs of hip bones together is known as pelvis

The prostate and the seminal vesicles produce fluid that nourishes the sperm. This fluid provides most of the volume of semen, the fluid in which the sperm is expelled during ejaculation. Other fluid that makes up a very small amount of the semen comes from the vas deferens and from Cowper glands in the urethra. All this organs are located in the pelvis cavity.

He was created from a fluid comes out from between the sacrum bone and Pairs of hip bones. 86:6-7

The Pelvic cavity is created by the space between the pelvic bones.

Pelvic cavity  is a body cavity that is bounded by the bones of the pelvis. The cavity is home to the most of the reproductive organs.

Words of the Imam Zainul Abidin (عليه السلام) in Dua 32 (his supplication in the night prayer) of the  Sahifa e Sajjadiya

 

  أللهُمَّ وَأنتَ حَدَرْتَنِي مَاءً مَهِيناً مِنْ صُلب، مُتَضَائِقِ الْعِظَامِ حَرِجِ الْمَسَالِكِ إلَى رَحِم ضَيِّقَة سَتَرْتَهَا بِالْحُجُبِ  

O Allah you descended me as liquid that serves from sulb, constricted by bones, (through) contracted  passages  towards the  constricted womb that you covered with the veils.
