Asalamu Alaikum Brothers and Sisters

I have recently met a person at my university who is consuming meat that isnt Halal. This person has claimed writing to Sistani and receiving advice that allows one to eat such foods when Halal Meat isnt available to you. By this I think It was meant that Halal meat isnt accessible in the local city area. This does not seem right to me and I have not been able to find anything backing it up on sistani.org.

It is of note that Halal meat is available in our city, actually available at many outlets. Of course I have notified this person of the places to shop etc. but I would like to see if there is actually a ruling in favour of the claims.

Please reply quickly with your thoughts and If there are any such rulings as claimed, please provide a reference.

-Thanks in Advance!

never heard of such a thing,, only time u r allowed to eat haram is when u r actually dying in a place with NO food except for haram,, and even then u shouldn't eat more than something to keep u alive. It always shocks me when people choose to eat haram,, there's always a halal option and if it all fails a person can leave on bean and toast it's got the needed protein lol

not to mention the negative effect of haram meat on soul, akhlaq and religion.

Exactly! As there are many alternatives available why resort to eating haram meat?

The only time when eating or drinking haram is allowed is when you are dying and there is literally no other option. Not because the closest outlets happen to serve only haram meat!

First of all, you should've asked Sistani's offices through najaf.org, they answer within 1 or 2 days. Moreover I read the rulingof Ayatollah Saanei that in very difficult circumstances it is possible to consume non-halal meat. However, if you say that it's not difficult to get halal meat, then your friend is in error. So consult with Sistani before you confront him, and just tell him once, otherwise he's going to be more stubborn, as people usually do.

This is the best answer so far. Eating haram takes away the capability of accepting hidaya, and damages the soul permanently; ignorance is the only excuse. It is so critical that you ought not to even marry a person who eats haram knowingly.

Here where I live, lots of people are "vegetarian", "vegan", don't eat chicken, eggs, "red meat" etc, for a cause they believe in. Wether it is animal rights, spiritual reasons, or etc, they are sticking to it religiously.

On the other hand many of us Muslims, the people who were supposed to "surrender" to Allah (swt) however, seem to have problem with not eating meat on regular basis and are looking for loop holes in our deen to justify it.

Something to think about...

Thanks everyone. You'v backed up what I thought. I have sent information on all the local halal outlets and Inshallah they will cease eating this way.

It was a real shock to see a muslim do this. Actually the person offered to buy me lunch suggesting we both have a steak...thats how the conversation came about :/

Inshallah I will contact and get a ruling even though we are all pretty much on the same page with this issue.

If you mean by 'we are all on the same page' us people on ShiaChat..or the E-Ayatollahs here, then just disregard all of our opinions. Most of us don't even know the Qur'an by heart to make some sort of judgment, nor did most of us had an islamic study background..

Gosh I meant the general consensus. There is nothing wrong with seeking your brothers and sisters opinions, keeping in mind that In my initial post I told you I had already turned to Sistani. Whats more I asked for you all to give me a link to any references you might make. I am not one of those idiots who will blindly follow these "E-Ayatollahs".
