Why Are There More Sunnis Than Shia

Because it all traces back to the succession and establishment of the caliphate. The majority accepted Abu Bakr, etc. Also with the establishment of dynasties like the Ummayyads and Abbassids, the elites were Sunnis and spearheaded expansion, which naturally led to more Sunni adherents. Also the marginalisation by the elites of the Jafari mathab was at the expense of patronage of the Sunni mathahib such as the Hanafi one also played its part.
