Western Movies and TV are not good for your soul. Same goes for a majority of video games. To pass time, learn Arabic (if you are not a native speaker) read Quran, Duas and religious books. There is a book review section here at ShiaChat, start with recommendations there. It will strengthen your belief and improve your spirituality.

If I knew the benefit of not watching Western TV and Movies, I would have given up on them decades ago.

Not all video games and movies, even Western Movies are haram, but you have to pick and choose very carefully.

When I want to relax and watch a movie, it takes me along time to pick one out, so much garbage produced in the West, but

there are some good ones.

Basically, if a movie shows women undressed or 1/2 undressed, contains anti-islamic messages, or contains a large amount of vulgar language or

gratuitous violence (like cutting off limbs, brain pieces scattering all over, etc), you shouldn't watch them. Same goes for video games. So basically 95% of movies and video games made in the West contain some or all of those.

The things that gets most muslims (because they don't pay much attention to them) are the gratuitous violence and the anti-islamic messages.

They think if a movie doesn't have women taking their cloths off or people cursing(auzubillah) Islam or the Prophet, then it's o.k. to watch or play

Most of the anti-islamic messages are subtle but often repeating. If you watch almost any movie you will see them. I started to notice them alot in the past few years so it's hard for me to watch movies now. This is brain programming. Also, watching extreme violence over and over will warp your brain and will make you think of people as objects, make your heart become hard, and will affect your aklaq and eventually your Iman (pornography will do the same thing but most brs know it's haram). So be careful of those. I generally avoid movies with an 'R' rating. My rule of thumb is that if I can't watch it with my kids then I probably shouldn't be watching it. So if you don't have kids, then imagine watching it with your kids and if you would be o.k. with that then watch it, otherwise don't.

Salam,

i think its better than most of the bollywood/hollywood [Edited Out] and with less haram scenes.

"none" is always better than "less" when it comes to haraam scenes. So just turn off your TV completely and unplug it if you can. Tonight is Shab-e-Jumaa a blessed night, focus on Allah...

Salam,

W Salam :) I agree , most movies and video games are Haram . But i am addicted to Movies and video games , like i am addicted to counter strike , but when playing i tell myself violence is not okay and i play just for time pass , similarly i avoid movies which have nudity but when such scenes come i fast forward these scenes , and i avoid watching movies which have anti-islamic messages , and which promoted evolution and darwin's theory

Don't forget about various activities with your wife, that is completely halal and encouraged.

LOL :D i am not married :P

Start by reading some Islamic books (Self Building, 40 Hadith, Light within me, etc.), and make a commitment to be on the right path. Offer prayers on time with concentration. Allah will give you the willpower and guide you along the way. As someone said :

With every step that a faithful servant of God takes towards Him, God's grace turns towards him and the Almighty moves closer to him. The similitude of the degrees of faith and the availability of the means of Divine succour is that of a man moving with a lamp in darkness; with every step that he takes forward, some more of the path in front of him is illuminated, which allows him to take another step forward. With every step that a man takes forward on the path of the Hereafter, that path appears clearer to him and God's grace upon him increases, preparing the means of attention towards the world of Divine proximity and of antipathy towards the world of separation and distance.

Take that first step with a firm resolution

Common man, do you ever think of anything else?

To answer the question, do anything you want that doesn't have anything haram in it. Find a hobby, read books, learn something new, etc.
