I was kind of joking...

but if you want a serious input I read that Imam Ali (as) and Sayeda Fatima (sa) went to the Prophet (sawa) for advice on how to distribute the housework, the Prophet (sawa) replied with everything outside the house Imam Ali (as) should do, and everything inside Sayeda Fatima (sa) should do :)

Seeing yourself as above housework is prideful and arrogant. All peoples do housework. In Islam it is not required of women to do housework as it was seen as a way to raise her above the stature of maidservant. Although most women do nurture and take care of family and home willingly, it is not required.

The prophet (pbuh) did not see himself above doing basic chores. Neither did Imam Ali (as).

Humility and Modesty of the Prophet (S):

The Prophet (S), whose knowledge was derived from the Divine Revelation, and whose soul was so great that it could preponderate over the spirits of millions upon millions of human beings, who rejected all the practices and customs of the pagan Arabs, who shattered under his feet all the false creeds, abrogated all the scriptures, and the circle of prophethood achieved its completion in his noble existence; who was the ruler of the world and the hereafter, and who was the master of all the worlds, with the permission of God Almighty; yet his humility towards the creatures of God was more than of any other human being. He hated to see his Companions stand up in his respect. Whenever he entered a gathering, he used to sit in the lowest place He used to dine on the floor and used to sit on the floor and used to say: "I am a slave of God; I dine like a slave and sit in the manner proper for a slave." It has been reported from al-'Imam al-Sadiq (A) that the Prophet (S) preferred to ride a donkey without a saddle, preferred to dine in a lowly place with the slaves, and offered alms to beggars with his two hands. That holy personage used to ride a donkey and used to sit on the mount with a slave or some other man. It is written about him (S) that he used to share with the members of his household the duties of housework himself used to milk the sheep, stitch his own clothes and shoes, grind the flour and knead the dough, and carry his belongings himself. He liked the company of the poor and the destitutes and used to dine with them. Such, and better than what we have described, was the character and the modesty of this great personage, although besides holding his high spiritual station he held to perfection the authority of a temporal sovereign. Similar was the life and character of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã, who also followed the Prophet's way, and his character was identical to that of the Prophet (S).

Also:

.........a woman, lawfully is not duty-bound to carry out housework such as cleaning, cooking, washing up, childcare, knitting, sewing, etc. Although the majority of women do carry out these works of a housewife on their own, these are not mandatory. Men should be grateful to their wives for their work in the house http://www.al-islam.org/marriageandfamily/55.htm <as it is a gift not a duty>.

Dont quite get what you were trying to state their, woman can work and do housework at once.

You dont really need a hadith to know that men are the ones that should be doing all of that and plus they need to provide food/money thats their responisbility. However most woman do housework out of their own free will like others have stated.

Its about time couples helped eachother without having to dish out hadiths at eachother to do stuff.

Isn't there one about Imam Ali, after the death of Fatima, helping out a black lady or a lady whose husband died in battle, cooking, cleaning, and playing with their children while the woman did something other worke. Imam Ali then put his face the fire and said something. Something like, this is fire of hell. Probably got it all wrong or made it up. For that Im sorry.

Anyway, if I had a wife that had a 'career', it would really depend on the woman and our relationship as we understand it (Islamicly not Westerly or both with some agreements); I /He would/should definitely help out. Lucky her, she doesn't have to pay me either where I would must pay her (in Islam isnt that the case?).

But if she insists I do all the housework according to the Western feminist style, I won't do it. I'll just make more of a mess LOL.

In general, in an Islamic marriage, at least in my opinion, the man should help out more than often especially if the wife needs help.

These question are are very dependent on individual marriage.

But over all we need to remember

wife needs to obey husband and fufill his rights

Husband needs to be kind to his wife/wives and fulfill their rights.

Not quite apart from matters of belief and haram and halal a wife should obey the husband.

She would be rewarded for it and husband would be punished for any injustice.

She has the free will to divorce if she can not obey.

But obviously most men dont control like that so it's give and take.

What is the scope & perimeter of kindness here?

So my dishwashing, cloth washing and vegetable cutting comes under the clause "to be kind"?

She never gave me a single penny for these services :D and neither I ever asked for it.

Anyway, keeping jokes aside, I think it is a matter of mutual respect, love and mercy. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) has placed affection & mercy in this relationship و جعل بينكم مودة و رحمة, so if husband see his wife over burden in the domestic tasks, he should have to help her to his best. This is the display of affection & mercy as actions speak louder then words.

Allah has given her the free will, but you end up finding a vast majority of men abuse that.

.

Maybe you have experienced a controlling father, brother, uncle, brother in law's , husband.etc

If so I'm sorry for your struggle but from my personal social circle and community the men are well balanced.
