Popular Arabic Tv Shows With English Sub-titles?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

When I wanted to improve my English language skills, especially fluency, I tried a few things but the only one that seems to have worked well was watching humor or comedy shows on TV (Yes Minister, Candid Camera, The Simpsons, Friends, Colbert Report and others) for a few hours every day. It was easy because these kind of shows are very popular, just buy the CD/DVDs or go to YouTube or official sites and start watching episode after episode after episode...

Arabic however, I couldn't figure out... can people please suggest any equivalent shows that are popular and easily accessible (I don't mind paying a little bit if it means good quality) and have reliable sub-titles?

One great side-effect of the English shows I watched was the popular culture lessons I learned as a result, and things didn't feel alien when I visited these countries later. I would love it if your suggestions are also popular enough to catch-up on Arabic cultures and norms too, apart from being funny :)

You could try watching the series about sayeda Maryam, my arabic isn't that good, so I can't comment on the quality of the subtitles, from what I could tell, they seemed fine. also you've got around ten hours worth.

Someone told me that fussha is only spoken on the news, religious films/khutbas, historic films, and childrens shows. So maybe watching the popular shows wouldn't be good for you.

For example, where I live, this is a very popular show, I tried watching it, but, I couldn't understand anything

It's a terrible show from what I could make out though.

Thanks so much for the Lady Maryam link! Inshallah I'll watch it soon.

Apart from understanding our religious texts (which is an important objective), I also want to be able to follow political developments in the middle east, so the normal TV shows will also help.

Heh, I was debating it with myself and ended up deciding this one would likely be appropriate because of the same reason :)

Whoever reported this deserves to be named and shamed

Bro, why would you want to do that? Reporting at ShiaChat is anonymous so that people are not fearful of saying something.

This does seem to be a great topic to put in the new Education subforum, if the mods/admins accept it. Please see this topic.

Because the brother clearly opened this is good faith, not trying to troll, and it is the Holy Month, there was no need to report it.

We have narrations telling us to learn arabic properly, Haji is right, this is part self development.

My arabic teacher told us to watch stuff like this

But it's terrible, and I couldn't watch more than a few minutes worth, but maybe you'll like it.

I always find things to do with religion are easier to watch, because from the start there will be quite a lot of vocabulary you are familiar with.

Some 'stories of the prophet' type thing would be good.

This one was a bit better, but its short, and I don't think there were full episodes on youtube

Thanks guys.

Ali_Hussain, I will appreciate Islamic ones too, you have a good point that might be an easier way for beginners... I just wanted my knowledge of the language to be more rounded.

The one problem you may have from Islamic ones (or maybe this is just me) is that you might assume what is being said by the characters, and then with a wrong assumption believe that is what they said.

I remember one time I was at the mosque and the person giving the khutba was an ayatullah and he was speaking in urdu, I could make out some of the words because they were the same in farsi and some were basic arabic words e.g. takbiratul ihram. Anyways what happened is I assumed what he was saying, but I asked my friend who was there and what he actually had said was totally different to what I had heard.

I found this, I watched the first 5 minutes of it, the language is quite basic (no subtitles though) but I had to concentrate quite hard, because there are 'external' sounds when the people are speaking and they aren't very eloquent.

nabi Ibrahim (a)

If you just follow the links on the right hand side for the other parts.

nabi yusuf (a) - this one seems better, the people speak more clearly, but again, I only watched the start

I would suggest cartoons coz they r mostly in fusha (classic Arabic) and even if u don't understand them fully u can know the uses of some words and phrases

good channels are baraem ÈÑÇÚã or Jazeera Children ÇáÌÒíÑÉ ááÃØÝÇá or just youtube stuff like ÃÈØÇá ÇáÏíÌÊá , ÇáßÇÈÊä ãÇÌÏ ¡ ÓÇáí ¡ ÚÏäÇä æ áíäÇ etc

Also, listen to Arabic programs on Alkawthar TV Almanar etc

good luck

This website has litarly every cartoon that has ever been translated to Arabic, It has no subtitles but cartoons often have easier dialoge.

From Tom and Jerry and Heidi to Dragonball Z and Captain Majid .

You can also find SInbad the Sailor in Arabic (that classic 70s cartoon) I highly suggest it

http://www.cartoonarabi.com/

It has helped me in my Arabic hopefully it will help you too.
