Assalamu Alaykum,

I am trying to learn how to pray Salatul Layl. I've looked it up on the internet but its confusing me. When explained they mention the qunoot and ruku and I don't really know what those words mean(dont know much arabic). If anyone who knows how to pray it can please explain it to me in simple terms I would very much appreciate it. May Allah(swt) bless you for your help and reward you greatly for teaching a fellow sister how to perform it. Thank you so much.

(wasalam)

wa alaykum as salaam,

.

You should try to pray 51 rak'at a day all year round, the extra ones are:

2 for fajr

8 for dhuhr

8 for asr

4 for maghreb

1 for isha (but you pray it in the sitting position, so you have to pray two. Just stay as you are sat after isha, then to takbir and pray the same way as the normal, for ruku, lean foreward a little bit.)

For all of the above prayers, it is not obligatory to recite a second surah, so if you want, you can just say al-fatiha and then go into ruku after the takbir.

There are also the 11 for the salat al-layl.

here is a little book by al-majlisi about it, but it isn't transliterated, but still has some nice narrations in it.

http://www.al-islam.org/salatallail/

Salatul Layl consists of a total of 11 raka’ats, divided into the following prayers:

1. Nafilah of Layl: 8 raka’ats (4 x 2 raka’ats)

2. Salât al-Shaf’a: 2 raka’ats

3. Salat al-Witr: 1 raka’at

1. Nafilah of layl- recommended surah is al-kafirun

2. salat al-shaf'a- 1 raka'at- Sura an Nas

2 raka'at- sura al falaq

3. salat al-witr-This is a one rak’ah prayer. The following surahs are recited after Sura al-Hamd.

Sura al-Ikhlas (#112) 3 timesSura al-Falaq (#113) 1 timeSura an-Nas (#114) 1 time

then

A) qunut- recite the following du'a

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent the merciful

There is no god except Allah

the Forbearing, the Generous

There is no god except Allah

the High the Almighty

Glory be to Allah

Lord of the seven heavens

and Lord of the seven earths

and whatever is in them, and between them

and above them and below them,

Lord of the Mighty Throne.

Peace be on the Messengers.

All praise is for Allah Lord of the worlds.

O Allah bless Muhammad and his pure family.

Transliteration:

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Laa ilaaha illallahul Haleemul Kareem

Laa ilaaha illallahul `Aliyul `Atheem

Subhanallahi Rabbil Samawaatil Sab`

Wa Rabbil Aradeenas Sab`

Wa Ma Feehinna Wa Ma Baynahonna Wa Ma Fawqahunna Wa Ma Tahtahunna

Rabbul `Arshil `Atheem Wa Salaamon `Alal Mursaleen

Wal Hamdulillahi Rabbil `Alameen

Wa Sallallahu `Ala Mohammadin Wa Aalihil Tayyibeen

B) Recite 70 times this prayer for forgiveness

Translation : I seek forgiveness of Allah my Lord and I turn to Him

Transliteration: Astagfirullaha Rabbi Wa Atoubo ilayh

C) Ask for the forgiveness of forty believers, men and women, who have died or are living, by repeating forty times:

Translation : O’ Allah, forgive ___________

Transliteration : Allahoma ighfir li _________

then say

Translation : O Allah forgive all believers, male and female

Transliteration: Allahoma Ighfir lil Mu`mineena Wal Mu`minaat

then say

Translation:

I seek forgiveness of Allah, He who there is no god but He, the Ever living, the subsisting, from all my oppressions and my sins and my excesses on my soul, and I turn (repentant) to Him

Transliteration:

Astagfirullahal Lathi Laa ilaaha illa Huwal Hayyul Qayyum Li Jamee`I Thulmi Wa Jurmi Wa Israafi `Ala Nafsi Wa Atubu ilayh.

D) Repeat seven times:

Translation : This is the position of one who seeks refuge in You from the fire

Transliteration: Hatha Maqaamol `Aa`ithi Bika Minal Naar

E) Say three hundred times:

Translation : (I ask for Your) pardon

Transliteration: Al-`Afw

then say

Translation:

My Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me, and turn to me Surely You are the Oft-returning, the Merciful

Transliteration:

Rabbi Ghfir Li War-hamni Wa Tub `Alayya Innaka Anatal Tawwabur Raheem

then got to ruk'uh, and then finish the prayer as normal

I hope you get many blessing in the Holy Month

all the best, with salaams

Brother, I know it says to ask forgiveness for 40 believers but am I allowed to ask forgiveness for people who arent Muslim? Like my family...? What about my Sunni Brothers?

it's a tough one, you should consult a scholar, I personally do have some relative who are not muslim, and I have included two of them, I also have included a few sunni friends of mine on my list.

I think most scholars would probably say the sunnis are ok, not sure about non muslims, being strick about it.

But at any rate, it wouldn't be haram, to do it.

Yeah, I mean, it says 40, but I wouldn't think it would be a harm to name 45, say, instead. I'd think God would be happy to have us remember and pray for more people close to us. To me it's the beautiful point of this special prayer; by remembering others first, you in the end help yourself.

It says 40 Mu'mineen or Mu'minat, this is a specific reference to Shi'as only. Sunnis and other non-Muslims can never be Mu'mineen without believing in the Wilayah of Imam Ali (as) . This has been proven.

Though, it doesn't hurt to ask a Scholar.

Yeh exactly, I'm not harming anyone by asking forgiveness for them, even if they do not follow our School let alone our Relgion.

Even though it does, I still will ask forgiveness for my Sunni Brothers & my family. I ask for forgiveness for them all the time, what is the difference from including them in this?
