Are you cheering for a particular team?

What sports do you watch? What sports you wont watch?

I like watching the Olympic Games. I generally like to watch the following sports

- Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Gymnastics and Running.

I won't watch cycling, beach volleyball, water polo, shot put, archery, handball

Most of the times if I happen to watch an Olympic match it involves one where it actually has meaning to competitor i.e. their lives depend on it.

Wrestling, swimming, gymnastics, volleyball, etc.

I don't really "follow" any events except maybe Athletics if there are Trinis.

I just look at it for entertainment. Namely gymnastics, diving, swimming, table tennis.

The rest I just don't care to look at.

My thing is, if I don't get time to watch FIFA World Cup or the UEFA Euros, no way in hell I'm gonna make time for Olympics

EDIT: BTW, Mr. Bean's performance was a CLASSIC! everything else was [Edited Out]

I love the gymnastics! of course i'm going for Team USA but Team RUSSIA was really great too :)

Yes. They are good. But sometimes I sense that they fumble due to being too nervous. I didn't get a chance to watch the Russian Gymnast team but I did see the USA gymnasts in action. My favorite is when they go on the uneven bars and the balance beam. It takes a lot of skills to get these two right.

Won't watch:

Football and Tennis (-Don't judge me! I'm a fanatic Arsenal fan and love Wimbeldon Tennis but NOT for Olympics!!!)

Spain didn't do well in the soccer. In fact Japan did well.

I'll probably watch Tennis men single, If I happen to catch them on the TV.

I watched a Badminton match. BORINNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!! Malaysia won though.

What did Malaysia won?

controversy in the mens gymnastics: it was China - GB - Ukraine and then the Japanese asked for an enquiry and it ended up China - Japan - GB.

Im officially supporting GB but actually support who ever deserves their result. Like the other day someone from Kazakstan won the cycling that the GB team were predicted to win, he looked so happy and emotional  i was so pleased for him :P

My favorite is when they go on the uneven bars and the balance beam. It takes a lot of skills to get these two right.

I cant watch the balance beam >.<. I like the vault and floor display and the bars.

(sorry i made my Olympic thread btw Gypsy. I hadnt read this one and didnt realise it was about favourites >.<)

So, I saw another sport yesterday. Do you guys know anything about synchronized diving?

controversy in the mens gymnastics: it was China - GB - Ukraine and then the Japanese asked for an enquiry and it ended up China - Japan - GB.

I did read about this news. The Japanese coach felt that the judges deducted way too many points when one of their gymnast fall off from the stationary horse! And the judges revised their points... :donno:

Chinese gymnasts are doing very well.

I also noticed that the cricket is not listed as the Olympic Sport?

what do you guys think about some of the muslim athletes not fasting? Is it even a reasonable excuse to not fast according to the Ja'fari madhab? I heard that the Egyptian team has gotten permission from some of their scholars not to fast and to make it up later and/or pay to feed a poor person a day for each day missed? Say for example someone was a miner working in such a physical job, in an underground, hot environment, where they may well get very ill if they fasted, would they be able to not fast if this is their only means of livelyhood? What if they had other options for work(whether it was easy or difficult to get another job or not) Does this then apply to olympic athletes? who could then make up the fasts at a later date? This is their job after all? Would this apply to all sports, or just ones where their is more physical elements such as long distance running, or wrestling? what about sports such as swimming and diving which inevitably involve imersing the head fully in water and therefore breaking the fast?

As for my favourite sports to watch during the olympics, I like gymnastics and tae kwan do-It is so inspiring to see the female martial artists with hijab taking part in such a strong and difficult martial art! I also like to see the muhajjabahs who do archery, not so keen on the muhajjabahs who do running in really tight outifts that are not really hijab and show too much of the woman's body shape, don't see why they can't sacrifice a little bit of possible wind resistance and just wear looser clothing... no point in representing muslim females if you don't do it properly...

Salams and duas inshallah

Oh and as for teams I support, team GB, team Iran and team Iraq

Most of the athletics are travelers in London. Sunnis also have laws where the travelers don't really need to fast. The Jaffari Fiqh also have similar laws about travelers. The other aspect of fasting is a rule that specify if the nature of your job requires strenuous work and the fasting become unbearable, then it is permissible to open your fast.

Again, I am not saying competing in the Olympic games are more important than the fasting! Just sharing possible reasons on what could be at play here.

There was a bit of drama today/yesterday. A female fencer from the South Korean fencing team refused to leave the arena because she lost to a female fencer from German. Her coach argued with the judges for an hour. Eventually, the Olympic officials escorted her out of the arena.

Sports that rely on judges giving points are not real sports IMHO.

They should rearrange the gymnastics equipment so that it is no longer solo and the athletes can hit each other (e.g. two pommel horses side by side) and whoever falls to the ground loses.

Much more entertaining.

did anyone see the boxing, Iran v cuba? the ref was unbleievably biased! even the bbc commentator was shocked! and the cuban boxer just looked empty when the ref held up his had to say he had won... what a hollow vistory! Also, I have tried researching the Iranian team and the news stories about them online, and it is really difficult to find anything properly or easily, but when you search the saudi team for example, it is really easy, wonder why that is...

. At the opening ceremony they went on about the teams that had female athletes for the first time, as if we should be praising them and grateful... but they never mentioned how the Islamic republic of Iran has always had female athletes, even in sports like judo and taekwondo! Why wasn't this mentioned?

As for some athletes not fasting, if you are travelling to a place and staying there for longer then 10 days, and the olympics is longer then 10 days and the athletes will be in london presumably for the whole tornament, so therefore they should fast. Also, some of the the British home team athletes are muslim, and I saw an interview with one of them on Press tv, where he said that he had made the 'difficult' decision not to fast, preumably he is sunni and therefore even if his hometown is not london, then he still has to fast, so rules of travelling should not apply to any of the athletes. Unless they are travelling in and out of london or wherever they are based for more then 10 days, in order to break the fast at the required distance away and the return back after the next day... etc. Sounds every complicated to me... So I dunno which scholars whether shia or sunni have given a fatwa that athletes are not required to fast... and I am not sure what their reasoning is, but some athletes don't even seem to have gotten the ruling of a scholar, and that they have just made a 'difficult' decision not to fast under the assumption that they are exempt... anyway....

DPRK is one of the best team with already 4 gold medals. :)

Did you get mad when they raised the South Korean flag instead of the North Korean flag in the Award Ceremony?

In a statement the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games said: “Today, ahead of the women’s football match at Hampden Park, the South Korean flag was shown on a big screen video package instead of the North Korean flag. Clearly that is a mistake.

“We will apologise to the team and the National Olympic Committee and steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again.”

The error came when the teams were being introduced to the modest crowd in Glasgow, and the South Korean flag was shown on the big screen in a video package.

The North Korean players were horrified when they saw their faces appearing alongside the emblem of their fiercest rivals.

The players then refused to appear for the scheduled 7.45pm kick-off, and only emerged after negotiations and profuse apologies by officials at the venue.

iranian flag bearer Ali Mazaheri got disqualified by a biased ref today.... seemed like a very political ploy. disqualify the flag bearer who was definitely a medal contender to symbolize knocking down iran's flag.

I did not see this news. Do you have report of this incident?

George Bovell is the only hope (I think) we have for medalling this Olympics.

He had the fasting time in the Men's 50m Freestyle this morning. Later this afternoon is the semifinal...All eyes on him..

come on George!

I did not see this news. Do you have report of this incident?

i dont have a clip of the fight, and i'm no boxing expert, but it did seem a little bit biased. i mean, at that level of competition, you cant go from 0 warnings to a disqualification in 56 seconds.. but obviously, their not going to admit a bias. maybe in a few weeks/months when it no longer matters, they'll admit it was a bad judgement call by the ref.

After living in China for a couple of years....well let me just say this behavior doesn't really surprise me.

I was reading people comments and a lot of people don't trust the Chinese. Do you remember when the female swimmer from China recorded even a faster time than the male swimmer in the last 50m. Do you know what was the first question on everyone mind? Did she use any illegal substance.

WhooHOO! Jessica Ennis owns! 03.gif

I seem to be missing a lot of good sports. :o

I watched one of my favorite events in the Olympic, running.

I saw the Iraqi female runner. She was pretty fast. In the second match, I saw a young girl from Qatar. Within the first few secs, she had to stop because of cramp. They had to take her out from the stadium in a wheel chair. Poor girl was crying. I also saw a female runner from Afghanistan. She wasn't that fast.

Swimming is still fun to watch and you learn how the great swimmers swim.

lol the Arab and Qatari should not have been in the Olympics in the first place. I think they got in via connections, at least I know the Arab one did because her father was a Judo referee.

I've been hearing a lot about doping allegations against some nations such as North Korea, China, and Russia. This is really pathetic. It truly defeats the purpose of the Olympics and I feel horrible for those that end up becoming silver, bronze etc. because of these kinds of situations.

Somewhat dissapointed. In the men's 85kg Iran won bronze and today in the men's 94kg they came fifth -_-

Well at least we won gold in wrestling today. Hamid Sourian in Greco-Roman came out on top. Our first gold in London. Hoping for more.

We're also favorites for the +105kg with Salimi in there. I expect that to at least be the 2nd gold unless our guy gets upset there.
