(salam)

Does anyone make digital art (more specifically calligraphy)? What program do you use to add the backgrounds? I asked a few people (though they don't actually do it), the main answer seems to be ‘photoshop’

I signed up with them on this site

http://www.photoshop.com/

But can’t really see what I’m supposed to do, I guess I have to pay for one the programs, does anyone know which one it would be?

I don’t want anything fancy, I just want to be able to scan what I make, then add a background like in this picture.

or like this

Quranic_Calligraphy_Exbibit_6_by_kchemnad.jpg

thanks, with salaams

jazak Allah khayran, you wouldn't happen to have a link for an easy to download version would you, I did search, but many of the ones that come up don't seem to be safe.

apart from photoshop you can try GIMP , which is free and does similar stuff to photoshop. To create those background is very simple. Scan you art work and in GIMP you will have layers.

http://www.gimp.org/

so Layer one = your art work

Layer two - will be a texture, with different blend modes, that overlay over your art work.

Layer three - texture or painted color image.

Youtube how layers work in photoshop and gimp and you will get the idea.

Also make sure you work at 300 DPI for nice print size.

So for large files you either work at A3 size or pixels, meaning something around 4000x3000 pixels +. Then save your files as .tiff or whatever gimp comes in to be able to edit them later.

Save as .jpg for web or as a flat image to share.

photoshop is good to edit a final design and add a background and mixing pix but not for actual writing the calligraphy. I would suggest illustrator for that, which is another program from Adobe, you can just download a torant with a cracked copy, or buy it. usually designers use it for logos and writings and such, it's not the easiest to learn, but once you get the hang of it u'll enjoy it *I hope* good luck

Actually, I had heard of illustrator, it looked pretty good, but I had problems downloading it (I'm still struggling with e-mails), but this GIMP downloaded, so I'll see how that works out. I can do basic (kufi) calligraphy, so insha Allah it will all come together!
