Ramadan According To Al-sistani

Hello brothers&sisters,

I was wondering, where can I check when Ramadan is starting in the Netherlands (europe) according to al-sistani?

My parents follow al-khoei and they always start a day before I do, I was born later when al-khoei (may Allah bless his soul) was passed away so I had to follow a different marja. My parents tried to explain why the difference is but I still couldn't really understand.. anyone care to explain why this is?

Answer :

Should the new moon be sighted in a city, it would suffice the sighting in another city, provided the two fall on the same horizon. That is, if the new moon was sighted in the first town, there would be a distinct possibility of sighting it in the second, barring any obstacles, such as clouds and high mountains.

I felt so humble and said to my father, “It is time I should fast the month of Ramadhan, and I shall start this year. However, what is the way to knowing that the month has started?

Answer :

You should be able to know that by sighting the new moon in your country or nearby countries that share the same horizon; in other words, if the crescent is sighted in one country, it should be seen in the other, were it not for natural barriers, such as clouds, mountainous terrain, and the like.

Indeed it says that the moon can be seen the 21th in the Netherlands.

Do you have any idea where in the Netherlands I can spot it?

I asked my mother and she said unless I see it with my own eyes I will have to follow Al-Sistani on this issue.

It would not be Friday for sure. The new moon will only be visible in a few places like South America and South Africa and that too using the optical aid. For us, it would most probably be Saturday.

I just saw your link from the above. So the first of the month of Ramadhan will be on Saturday. And it would be pretty much for everyone because the crescent would be visible on Friday.

Congratulations. We should be hearing from the marajas soon.

Actually Syed al-Sistani says not to rely on the fatwa of the Marja' when asserting when the first day of the month is. Funny to see his office completely ignoring that rule though.

1740. The 1st day of any month will not be proved by the verdict of a Mujtahed and it is better to observe precaution.

How can he pronounce the Eid when people have not even sighted the moon.

Sistani doesn't do the moon sighting. Someone else does it. He only affirm either the moon have been sighted or not.

I would wait until there's a formal anouncement on his webpage.

In the Name of Allah the Compassionate Most Merciful

Ramadhan is the month when the Qur'an was send down as a guide to mankind, also clear Signs for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). The Cow 185

Praise be to Allah Lord of the worlds and peace and blessings be upon His messenger Mohammad and his pure and chaste household.

The Momin lives in a state of inner strife between two rather compelling axis. One is that of his faith and divine orientation and the other what his worldly desires lead him to, fluctuating from one to the other from time to time.

Along comes the holy month of Ramadhan. The month in time chosen by Allah for the most noble event in the universe, which is the revelation of His words upon his chosen messenger Mohammad (s.a.w.w). The month of Allah as it is said: “do not say Ramadhan for it is one of Allah’s names, but say the month of Ramadhan.”

This month with its night of power (Lailatul-Qadr) which is better than a thousand nights. The month when Allah’s mercy is bestowed upon his servants - inviting them as His guests. A month full of countless virtues and moral excellence.

The advent of this month is to rescue the Momin from such fluctuations and tendencies so he may emerge triumphant out of that strife arena, overcoming the hurdles and pitfalls to race ahead in doing good and seeking nearness to Allah. No wonder then it’s the month of overwhelming blessings.

Everyone is well aware of all this. However, what our Momineen brothers need reminding of and warned against is the attempt to drain this month of its contents and meanings through the array of means our communities have been plagued with, whether or not they are unaware of at times.

To clarify here are a few examples:

A- Replacing customs and Shar’i ethic pertinent to this holy month with social habits such as gatherings and seminars void of attaining knowledge, Ma’rifa and the remembrance of Allah. Or by petty feasts and the sophistication of food and drink served - boasted about at gatherings.

B- Replacing recitation of the holy Qur’an (in its spring season) useful daily, nightly and Sahari Dua’s with watching TV serials designed especially for the holy month of Ramadhan in order to exhaust the fasting person’s time so that there’ll be no time for him to attend to the tasks of this holy month; like benefitting from the increased rewards and acceptance of Istighfar [repentance], acts of worship and obtaining Maghfira. “Wretched are those who are denied Allah’s Ghufran [forgiveness] in this great month.”

C- Neglecting sincerity of intention and devotion in acts of worship. Doing good deeds every year as a habit is what spoils the reward of those deeds. “Deeds are based on intentions, and each person will reap [rewards] according to his intention.”

D- Neglecting the purpose of fasting, which is one of the five ordinances Islam is based upon, particularly since it is singled out as being for Allah. “All acts of the son of Adam are for his-self except fasting is for Me [Allah] and I will reward him for it.”

The holy Qur’an has encompassed this purpose by saying: “So that you may learn self-restraint.”It has also been articulated in Ahadeeth to remind us of the hunger and thirst of Qiamat as well as the hunger and thirst of poor people. This shows the human being that his wealth and possessions are transient and that everyone is poor in the eyes of Allah and all are equal in their needs from Allah. The same applies to Haj rituals where everyone comes out in the same garment.

Therefore we need to reap the fruits of goodness and blessings in this generous month; otherwise we will have missed this golden opportunity during its hours, days and nights. Also to seek refuge in Allah for all our needs in both worlds and especially to recite Dua to hasten the reappearance of Qa’im Al-e-Mohammad (saww)- and Dua for the mercy and forgiveness for our parents and for those who have some rights upon us.

وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ

Seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble- minded (The Cow:45)

Patience in the above verse has been interpreted as Sawm [fasting].

We ask Allah the Magnificent to grant all Momineen success to fast, worship and recite the Qur’an and to accept their A’mal in the best way possible.
