well sis, i dont know how to read the arabic in there....but when I look at the drawing...it makes me think of how all the news programs try and drag muslims into every story......also it makes me reflect on hijab.....half of me is for it and half of me isn't that thrilled about the idea of wearing it....ya3ni I don't care if other sisters wear it and I would encourage them...But I don't now if I could ever really embrace it now...perhaps in the future tho...who knows....who knows

(salam)

I also cannot read the Arabic, but to me it is saying that the news, social, and entertainment media are all trying to pull our piousness away from us (symbolized by the hijab). And then I noticed that the two hands were different colors, so then I am thinking that although the Western media is leading this effort (symbolized by the white hand), even media in Muslim societies (symbolized by the brown hand) sometimes pull us in the same direction.

(salam) interested to read the resulting discussion and yall's take on this art:

You may feel disturbed, or have great admiration for this "piece of art". It just depends on your interpretation. Let's hear it!

I'll include mine later.

what is your interpretation? What do you think the artist was trying to reflect?

I think the artist is trying to show how women have lost what should be most important to them. Their modesty and hijab.

salaam,

The writing is in farsi and it reads:

Mr.Hempher, a British Spy, writes:

“Women with firm hejab are those that stay true to their hejab regardless of corruption. With every means possible we should stray the Muslim women from this type of Islamic hejab and introduce the non-hejab culture primarily to fool them to put the hejab aside. We should make them understand that hejab in terms of chador and abaya are irrelevant to Islam.”

Good interpretations.

My take: the white hand= Netanyahu (with the Israeli flag ring) and black hands Obama with the American flag rings. The companies on the shirts are meant to depict websites and media that promote a war against hejab, backing the actions of US and Israel either by what they show or do that can cause corruption in the wearing of hejab. Notice that the Muslimah is still covered, despite the chador being pulled off by the hands, but her clothes have vibrant colors and have lost the simplicity of the chador (with the flower ornaments) that attract attention. So like the quote says “We should make them understand that hejab in terms of chador and abaya are irrelevant to Islamic hejab” basically they are manipulating the meaning of what hejab is and making us believe it.

Yeah I see what you mean. My take: the girl on the very right is "liberating" the lady with the abaya from the "oppression" of her hejab, the middle girl is helping her.

pretty disgusting, i'll make sure to add this artist on the same list as shirin neshat

Here's another one for your enjoyment :)

It's very beautiful, that's for sure. Technically speaking.

But I can't help but think it's meant to be patronizing towards Islam and hijab. Why is the woman who is all covered up tangled and lying on the ground helpless? But the woman who is immodestly dressed standing tall and as if she's walking away in disgust at the women in hijab--both of whom cannot stand on their own two feet? I'm not sure about the woman in the middle...

I've never been great at art analysis so I'd love to hear your take on this jannahismygoal.

good interpretation mashAllah! I think your pretty good :)

Why do you think the two pics on the right are hung on the same level? i wonder if that has an intended meaning

Thanks!

And good point! I didn't even realize before that the two on the right are in the same room but the one on the left looks like she's back in some dark closet or something being dragged out... And if the two on the right ARE in the same room, I wonder why the light source for the lady in the middle is on her left but the light source for the lady on the right is to the right.

When we used to analyse art in my art classes, they always told us that EVERYTHING is intentional and has a meaning :P. I don't always agree with that but it makes it more fun to analyse.

excellent observation mashAllah! Two light sources maybe?

I concur, I don't think everything is intentional, simply because not everyone observes art with the same hue. I really wish this art depicted hejab in a positive light than this. Makes me think that we really are in a dire need of excellent muslim Artists, after all, a picture does speak a thousand words
