Sunni Sources :

Hafiz Abu Hatim Razi, in his Az-Zainat, which he compiled for clarifying the meanings of certain words and phrases current among scholars, says that the first new word that came into general acceptance in Islam in the days of the Prophet was "Shia." The word was applied to four prominent companions: Abu Dharr Ghifari, Salman Farsi, Miqdad bin Aswad Kindi, and Ammar Yasir.

Both Abu Nu'aim Isfahani in Hilyatu'l-Auliya, Vol. I, p. 172, and Ibn Hajar Makki in the fifth hadith of the forty hadith narrated in Sawa'iq-e Muhriqa in praise of Ali narrated from Tirmidhi, and Hakim from Buraida, that the Prophet said: "Verily, Allah has commanded me to love four persons and has told me that He loves them." When the people asked who these four persons were, he said: "Ali bin Abu Talib, Abu Dharr, Miqdad, and Salman."

Again, Ibn Hajar in Hadith No. 39 has narrated from Tirmidhi and Hakim from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet said: "Paradise is eager for three individuals, Ali, Ammar, and Salman."

The Holy Prophet (saws) said: "Salman is from our Ahle Bait (i.e., he is one of the people of my house)."

For this reason he was called "Salman Muhammadi" and he was admittedly the most staunch supporter of Ali, and a bitter opponent of Saqifa. He heard the verses of the Qur'an and the sayings of the Prophet about Ali and clearly understood that obedience to Ali was obedience to the Prophet and to Allah.

He repeatedly heard the Prophet (saws) say: "One who obeys Ali obeys me; and one who obeys me obeys Allah; one who is hostile to Ali is hostile to me; and one who is hostile to me is hostile to Allah."

Ibn Shahna, in Hashiyya-e-Kamil of Ibn Athir, Volume XI, page 112, writes in connection with the Saqifa that:

"Some of the Prophet's companions, and the Bani Hashim, Zubair, Atba Bin Abi Lahab, Khalid Bin Sa'id Bin As, Miqdad Bin Aswad Kindi, Salman Farsi, Abu Dharr Ghifari, Ammar Bin Yasir, Bara'a Bin Azib, and Ubai Bin Ka'b refused to swear allegiance to Abu Bakr. They assembled in Ali's house.

Umar Bin Khattab went there intending to burn down the house. Fatima protested to him. Umar said: 'Enter where all others have entered.'"

Ahmad Bin Hanbal's Musnad (and Sibt Ibn Jauzi in his Tadhkirat-e-Khawasu'l-Umma, p. 26, and Ibn Maghazili Shafi'i in his Manaqib have also narrated these hadith) that Anas Ibn Malik said:

"I asked Salman to ask the Holy Prophet who was his Wasi (vicegerent). Salman asked the Holy Prophet 'O Prophet of Allah! Who is your vicegerent?'

The Holy Prophet (saws) said, 'O Salman! Who is Mussa's successor?'

He said 'Yusha Bin Nun.'

Then the Holy Prophet said, 'My successor and my heir, who will pay my debt and will fulfill my promises, is Ali Bin Abi Talib.'"

Imam Ahmad Bin Hanbal in Musnad and by Mir Seyyed Ali Hamadani Shafi'i in Mawadda XIII of Mawaddatu'l-Qurba, on the authority of Salman Muhammadi, that the Holy Prophet (saws) said:

"Fatima's love is useful to us in a hundred places, the easiest of them being Death, the Grave, the Mizan (the Balance), Sirat (the bridge) and the Questioning.

So, if my daughter, Fatima, is pleased with somebody, I am also pleased with him. If I am pleased with somebody, Allah is also pleased with him.

If my daughter, Fatima, is displeased with somebody, I am also displeased with him. If I am displeased with him, Allah is also displeased with him. Woe be to him who oppresses Fatima and her husband. Woe be to him who oppresses Ali and Fatima and their Shias."

Salman Farsi’s Rank

Faith has ten ranks and Salman Farsi was on its tenth rank. He possessed knowledge of the unseen, the ability to interpret dreams and misfortunes, was well versed in genealogy and had even been favoured with gifts of Paradise, in this world.

The Holy Prophet (saws) said: “Whenever Jibraeel would descend, he would, on behalf of God, say: Convey my salutation to Salman!

Here is an example of the high degree of Salman’s faith. Once, Abu Dharr paid Salman a visit. Salman had placed a utensil over the fire to heat its contents. The two men sat together for some time, talking to each other, when suddenly the vessel toppled over, but to Abu Dharr’s amazement, its contents did not spill. Salman, picking the utensil up, placed it back upon the fire. A little later, the vessel fell over again, but once again its contents did not spill. Again Salman picked it up and placed the vessel upright.

Amazed, Abu Dharr hurried out of Salman’s house and was lost in contemplation over what he had witnessed. He happened to come across Amirul Mu'mineen (as) on the way and narrated the incident to him.

Having heard Abu Dharr’s narration, Imam 'Ali (as) said:

If Salman were to inform you of all that he possesses knowledge of, you would surely say: ‘May God have mercy upon the murderer of Salman.’ O’ Abu Dharr! Salman is the ‘door’ of God upon the earth. One, who recognises his status, is a Mu'min while one, who rejects him, is an infidel. Salman is (one) of us, Ahlul Bayt.” Muntahal Aa’maal, vol. 1, pg. 114.

Some ahadith narrated by Salman Al Farisi :

Sulaym Ibn Qays has narrated from Salman Farsi that he said: It was the habit of Quraish that they used to talk among themselves and if they saw anyone approach from the Ahlul Bayt of the Prophet they used fall silent. Once someone from them said, “The simile of Muhammad among the intellectuals is like that of date tree which has grown up on a dunghill.”

When Prophet heard about this, he came out infuriated to the Masjid and sat on the pulpit, till the people gathered. He praised and glorified the Almighty and then asked: “O people, who am I?” “You are the Messenger of Allah.” “I am the Messenger of Allah and Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muttalib,” and he mentioned his genealogy till Nazar.

Then he said, I and my Ahlul Bayt were some lights that moved in front of the Divine throne two thousand years before the Almighty Allah created Adam. When those glorified the Almighty, the angels used to follow in its steps. When the Almighty Allah created Adam (a.s.), and placed that light in his loins, and then sent him to the earth, and then placed that light in the loins of Prophet Nuh (a.s.) and made it enter the Ark, that same light was present in the loins of Ibrahim when he was thrown into the inferno.

And our light was always transferred in pure and noble loins till He brought out the gems of our nobility from the best wombs and cultivated our tree from the best ancestors and the purest wombs. None of them had gone near fornication. Indeed we, the sons of Abdul Muttalib, that is me, Ali, Ja’far, Hamza, Hasan, Husain and Fatima and Mahdi of the last age, are from the elders of the folks of Paradise.

Doubtlessly, the Almighty Allah looked at the earth and selected two men; one is me. Whom he sent with prophethood and messengership and the second is Ali Ibn Abi Talib (a.s.).

Then He revealed to me that I should make him as my brother, friend and successor. Indeed, after me, he is having more authority over all believers than they have on their own selves. The Almighty Allah loves one who loves him and the Almighty Allah hates those who are inimical to him.

None shall love him, but the believers; and none shall hate him, except the infidels. He is the tent peg of the earth after me. The earth would remain stable through his auspiciousness. He is the word of piety and his love is cause for deliverance from Hellfire. He is the firm rope of Allah whose recommendation causes salvation. Do you want to blow out the light of Allah, although he is going to perfect His light even though the disbelievers are averse to it.

After that the Almighty Allah looked at the creatures and chose from them eleven successors from us Ahlul Bayt and chose each of them one by one after me. Like the stars; when one sets, another rises. And he is the leader of the guides and the guided ones. No one can harm them except those who resort to deceit with them and one who abandons them and does not help them. They are the Divine Proofs on the earth and the witnesses between the creatures and the Almighty Allah.

They are the treasurers of Divine knowledge and those who explain His revelation and the mines of His wisdom. One who obeys them, has obeyed the Almighty Allah and one who disobeys them, has disobeyed the Almighty Allah.

They the extractors of knowledge and the Qur’an is with them. They cannot separate from Qur’an, till they reach me at Hauz Kauthar. Therefore convey this discourse to those who are absent. And then he said three times: “O Allah, please witness this.”

In Bihar Al Anwar :

Shaykh Hasan bin Sulaiman has narrated in Mohtazar, from the book of Sayyid Jalil Hasan Kabash and he has in turn taken from Muqtazab through his chains of narrators from Salman Farsi that he said:

“Once I came to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.); when he saw me, he said: "O Salman, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime appointed twelve successors for every prophet.

"Yes, O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), we have heard this from both people of book, Jews and Christians.”

He said: “But O Salman, do you know who my twelve successors are, whom the Almighty Allah has chosen for my Imamate after me?

I said: “Allah and His Messenger know better.”

He said: “Know that O Salman, the Almighty Allah created me from His special effulgence; then He called me, and I said Labbaik. Then He created Ali (a.s.) from my effulgence and then called him and he also said Labbaik. Then He created Fatima (s.a.) from my and Ali’s Noor and then called her and she also said: Labbaik. Then the Almighty Allah created Hasan and Husain from the Noor of me, Ali and Fatima (s.a.) and called them and they also said Labbaik. Then the Almighty Allah named us after five of His names. That is Allah is Mahmud and I am Muhammad; Allah is Ali and he is Ali. Allah is Fatir and she is Fatima, Allah is Zul Ahsan and he is Hasan; Allah is Mohsin and he is Husain.

Then through our Noor and the Noor of Husain, the Almighty Allah created nine Imams and called them and they also said: Labbaik. And it was before the Almighty Allah created the heavens or spread the earth or created the wind, water, humans and angels. We were in the form of lights in His knowledge and we used to praise Him and obey Him.”

Salman asked: “O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), May my parents be sacrificed on you, what is the reward for one who has their Marifat (cognition)?”

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) replied: “O Salman, one who has their true Marifat and follows them; befriends their friends and is inimical to their enemies and is aloof from them; by Allah, he is from us and he will follow wherever we go and live where we live.”

Salman asked: “O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), can one believe in them without knowing their names and lineage?”

He replied: “No.”

I asked: “Then how I should have faith in them?”

He replied: “You know all of them till Husain; so after Husain there will be the chief of the worshippers, Ali bin Husain (a.s.), then his son, Muhammad bin Ali Baqir, expounder of the sciences of all the former and latter prophets and messengers; after that will be Ja’far bin Muhammad, the truthful tongue of Allah; then Musa bin Ja’far Kazim who will observe restraint with regard to divine matters; then Ali Ibne Musa Reza; then Muhammad bin Ali Mukhtar; then Ali bin Muhammad Hadi; then Hasan bin Ali Samit and the trustee of the religion of Allah; then M.H.M.D. Ibne Hasan Mahdi, Natiq and Qaim.

Salman says: “I began to weep at this and said: O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), it’s a pity that Salman will not be able to see their time!”

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “Don’t worry Salman, you and people like you and those who would be devoted to them, who would be having their true recognition, would definitely reach their period.”

I thanked Allah in excess and then asked: "O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), would I remain alive till that time?"

He replied: "O Salman, read the following verses:

“So when the promise for the first of the two came We sent over you Our servants, of mighty prowess, so they went to and fro among the houses and it was a promise to be accomplished. Then We gave you back the turn to prevail against them, and aided you with wealth and children and made you a numerous band.” (Surah Isra 17:5-6)

Salman says: I began to weep more intensely due to my longing and then I said: "O Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.), is it your promise?"

He replied: "Yes, by the one who sent Muhammad as a Messenger, it is my promise about Ali, Fatima, Hasan and Husain and nine Imams after him; on the contrary for all the believers and every victim that they will all do Rajat. Then Iblis and his army will be brought and pure believer and absolute infidels will also be sent back so that revenge might be taken from them and the Almighty Allah will not be unjust on anyone and we are the interpretation of this verse:

And We desired to bestow a favor upon those who were deemed weak in the land, and to make them the Imams, and to make them the heirs, and to grant them power in the land, and to make Firon and Haman and their hosts see from them what they feared.” (Surah Qasas 28:5-6)

Salman says: "After that I arose from the presence of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.s.) and was the least worried when death comes to me.”

In Muqtazab, Ibne Ayyash has narrated a similar report from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Ja’far Suli from Abdur Rahman bin Salih from Husain bin Hamid bin Rabi from Amash from Muhammad bin Khalaf Tatari from Shazan from Salman. (Bihar Al Anwar)

Also in Bihar al Anwar :

Ghaibat Tusi: It is narrated from Ahmad bin Idris from Ali bin Muhammad from Fadhl bin Shazan from Ibne Abi Umair from Husain bin Abu Alaa from Abu Basir from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) that he said:

“When His Eminence, Salman Farsi entered Kufa he glanced at it and mentioned all the troubles and events that were to occur in it till he also mentioned about the Bani Umayyah rulers and the period after them. After that he said:

‘When all this is over, you must remain confined to your houses till the reappearance of the master of the affair, the pure one, son of the pure and purifying. The one who has an occultation and who is the ‘Tareed’ and ‘Shareed’

(Tareed (exiled) and Shareed (fugitive) are titles of our Master, His Eminence Hujjat (a.s.).)

On that occasion it will be necessary for you to attach yourselves to Ali Bin Abi Talib since he is the first man who will clasp hands with me on the Day of Judgement. He is the most truthful one and is the Faruq of his Community; he draws a distinction between right and wrong, and he is the chief of the believers."

Ibn Babawayh has narrated through authentic chains of narrators from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (a.s.) that Salman used to say: "I am surprised about six things; three of them make me laugh and three make me cry.

The three things that impel me to cry are separation of friends, and they are Muhammad (S) and his companions.

Secondly: the terror of death and the circumstances after death.

Third: To stand before the Almighty for accounting.

And the three things that make me laugh is firstly the man who is in pursuit of the world while death is in his pursuit.

Secondly the one who is oblivious of the circumstances of the hereafter even though the Almighty Allah and His angels are not oblivious of this and they have surrounded his deeds.

Thirdly, the one who opens his mouth to laugh and he does not know whether Allah is pleased with him or He is infuriated.

Shaykh Ahmad bin Abi Talib Tabarsi has narrated inIhtijaj that when the second Caliph after Huzaifa’s son, appointed Salman as the governor of Madayan and Salman accepted the post by the permission of Amirul Momineen (a.s.) and departed for Madayan, the Caliph wrote a letter to him raising some objections.

Salman replied: “In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. This is a letter from Salman, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (S) to Umar bin Khattab. I received your communication in which you condemned me and written that you have appointed me as the governor of Madayan and follow the practice of the son of Huzaifa and emulate his way of governance. So how can I inform you of all the good and bad things even though the Almighty Allah has restrained me in His clear verses from all that you order me to do? And He says:

“O you who believe! avoid most of suspicion, for surely suspicion in some cases is a sin, and do not spy nor let some of you backbite others. Does one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? But you abhor it; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah…”[583]

So it can never happen that I should disobey the Almighty Allah and obey you with regard to the son of Huzaifa.

And what you have written to me that I weave baskets and consume barley; these are not any such things about which one could criticize a believer and try to change these habits. O Umar, by Allah, I prefer weaving of baskets and consuming barley bread to usurping the rights of believers and claiming that which I don’t deserve, in the view of Allah. And it is nearer to piety. Indeed I have seen the Holy Prophet (S) that when he received barley bread he used to be happy and was never sorry at it.

And what you have mentioned that all that I earn I give it away in charity, it is only that which I am sending for the day of need and poverty (in hereafter). O Umar, I swear by Allah, I don’t care that the food that reached my mouth and goes down my throat is whether it is wheat flour or brain of a goat or barley husk. And what you say is that I have made the divine rule weak and degraded my self and made myself a public servant. So much so that the people of Madayan do not consider me as their ruler and they take me for a bridge over which they pass and place their loads upon it.

So you have written that all this causes weakness of and insult to the rule of Allah. So you should know that being humiliated in obedience of Allah, in my view is better than being exalted in the disobedience of Allah. And you also know that the Holy Prophet (S) used to have sympathy for the people and used to remain close to them and people used to obtain his nearness and sit close to him in spite of his majesty and prophethood. So much so that he was one among them. Due to his closeness with them the Prophet used to have ordinary food and wore coarse garments.

All Qurai[Edited Out]e and Arabs and black and white were all equal in religion in the view of the Prophet. And I testify that I heard the Holy Prophet (S) say: “One who rules over seven Muslims after me and does not deal with them with justice and he meets the Almighty Allah, He will be infuriated with him.” So, O Umar, I hope to be relieved from the governorship of Madayan safely. And become same as you allege: one who considers his self to be lowly and one who serves in favor of Muslims. Therefore, O Umar, what would be the condition of one who is the caretaker of the whole Ummah after the Messenger of Allah (S)? Certainly the Creator of the Universe says:

تِلْكَ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ نَجْعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوًّا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فَسَادًا ۚ وَالْعَاقِبَةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

“(As for) that future abode, We assign it to those who have no desire to exalt themselves in the earth nor to make mischief and the good end is for those who guard (against evil).”[584]

And you should know that I am not inclined to their punishment and I don’t apply any legal penalty for them except through the advice of a leader and possessor of intellect.

Therefore, I have adopted the middle path among them on the lines of the same leader and I behave only with his practice. And I know that if the Almighty Allah desires the well being of this Ummah, He would have intended betterment and guidance for them, and then he would have appointed over them a ruler who is better and wiser than them and if this Ummah had feared the Lord of the worlds, and had followed their Prophet and recognized the truth, it would not have addressed you as the chief of believers.

Thus you may issue any command you like, it cannot be applicable to us except in this worldly life. Therefore do not become arrogant as Allah has given you respite, and instead of that do not show off about it. Know that the Almighty Allah will catch you for your injustice and oppression in the world and the hereafter and He will ask you about the deeds that you have sent ahead. And you will see the consequences of your deeds.”
