Look at the first stanza

Pride

The proud will not enter Paradise, nor a violent speaker.

He will not enter hell, who hath faith equal to a single grain of mustard seed in his heart; and he will not enter Paradise, who hath pride equal to a single grain of mustard seed, in his heart.

Muhammad said, "That person will not enter Paradise who hath one atom of pride in his heart." And a man present said, "Verily, a man is fond of having good clothes and good shoes." Lord Muhammad said, "God is Beauty and delighteth in the beautiful; but pride is holding man incontempt."

Arrogance and Pride

Tasnif-I-Ghurar-ul-Hikam, p. 443

Imam Amir ul Mu'mineen [a] said: "He who considers himself a great one (self-conceited), is naught with Allah.

و قال علی علیه السلام : ما لابن آدم و الفخر: اوله نطفه، و آخره جیفه، و لا یرزق نفسه ، و لا یدفع حتفه.

What has a man to do with vanity. His origin is semen and his end is a carcass while he cannot feed himself nor ward off death.

Nahj al- Balaghah

Selection form the his sayings no. 454

"Indeed, He does not love the proud." [The Quran - an-Nahl (16):23]

"So enter the gates of Hell to dwell therein. Indeed evil is the abode of the proud. [ The Qur'an - An-Nahl (16):29]

Personally I think the following is a brilliant one:

"Man comes from a drop of semen and leaves as a piece of dust. He doesn't know when he came and he doesn't know when he's leaving, yet he goes around thinking he knows everything." - Imam Ali (as)

Pride is an outwardly action in that one goes around and belittling people with his pride, which known as going up to people with insolence and being rude to them as a result of pride. As well it may involve things like refusing to give charity cause you are too proud to give to the poor out of thinking you are better than them in regards to riches. Pride also is inwardly a rejection of belief out of thinking you are too good for it.

I never like the word pride. Arrogance is a better translation word used for what is described.

So he said: What ails you that you do istirja`? So I said: Because of what I heard from you. So he said: It is not what you think. I only meant unbelief (al-juhud). It is only unbelief.

I said: And what is the despising of the creation and the ignoring of the truth? He said: (It is that) one be ignorant (yajhalu) of the truth and speak evil of its people. So whoever does that, then he has attempted to wrest from Allah ÚÒø æÌáø His cloak.

And as-Saduq narrated it in Ma`ani al-Akhbar from Muhammad b. `Ali Majilwayh from his uncle form Muhammad b. `Ali al-Kufi from Ibn Baqqah from Sayf b. `Amira from `Abd al-Malik from Abu `Abdillah. And the one prior to it from his father from Sa`d from Ahmad b. Muhammd from `Ali b. al-Hakam. And the one prior to them both from Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil from `Ali b. al-Husayn as-Sa`dAbadi form Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from Ibn Faddal. And the first one by this sanad from Ibn Faddal from Ibn Muskan from Yazid b. Farqad from the one who heard Abu `Abdillah Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã saying, and he mentioned the like of it.

5 – And from him from Ya`qub b. Yazid from Muhammad b. `Umar b. Yazid from his father. He said: I said to Abu `Abdillah Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã. I eat delectable food and smell pleasant scent, and I ride the sprightly riding animal, and the slave-boy follows me. So do you regard there to be arrogance in these things, so that I not do them? So Abu `Abdillah Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã lowered his eyes, then said: The accursed arrogant one is only one who despises the people and is ignorant of the truth. `Umar said: I said: As to the truth, I am not ignorant of it, but (as to) despising I do not know what it is. He said: One who disdains the people and behaves arrogantly with them, then that is the arrogant one.

6 – Muhammad b. `Ali b. al-Husayn in Ma`ani ‘l-Akhbar from his father form Sa`d from Ahmad b. Abi `Abdillah from Muhammad b. `Ali from `Ali b. an-Nu`man from `Abdullah b. Talha from Abu `Abdillah Úáíå ÇáÓáÇã. He said: The Messenger of Allah Õáì Çááå Úáíå æÂáå said: Whoever has in his heart the weight of a grain of mustard-seed of pride shall never enter the Garden, and whoever has in his heart the weight of a grain of mustard-seed of faith shall not enter the Fire. I said: May I be made your ransom, the man wears the garment or rides the riding animal, so he is near to pride being recognized from him. So he said: It is not that. Pride is only the denial of the truth, and faith is affirmation of the truth.

And he narrated it in `Iqab al-A`mal from Muhammad b. Musa b. al-Mutawakkil from as-Sa`dAbadi from Ahmad b. `Abi `Abdillah likewise.

[ 20820 ] 7 Ü æÚä ãÍãÏ Èä ÇáÍÓä ¡ Úä ÇáÕÝÇÑ ¡ Úä ÅÈÑÇåíã Èä åÇÔã ¡ Úä ÅÓãÇÚíá Èä ãÑÇÑ ¡ Úä íæäÓ Èä ÚÈÏ ÇáÑÍãä ¡ Úä ÃÈí ÃíæÈ ÇáÎÒÇÒ ¡ Úä ãÍãÏ Èä ãÓáã ¡ Úä ÃÍÏåãÇ Ü íÚäì ÃÈÇ ÌÚÝÑ æÃÈÇ ÚÈÏÇááå ( ÚáíåãÇ ÇáÓáÇã ) Ü ÞÇá : áÇ íÏÎá ÇáÌäÉ ãä ßÇä Ýí ÞáÈå ãËÞÇá ÍÈÉ ãä ÎÑÏá ãä ßÈÑ ¡ ÞÇá : ÞáÊ : ÅäÇ äáÈÓ ÇáËæÈ ÇáÍÓä ÝíÏÎáäÇ ÇáÚÌÈ ¡ ÝÞÇá : ÇäãÇ Ðáß ÝíãÇ Èíäå æÈíä Çááå ÚÒø æÌáø.

7 – And from Muhammad b. al-Hasan from as-Saffar from Ibrahim b. Hashim from Isma`il b. Marrar from Yunus b. `Abd ar-Rahman from Abu Ayyub the silk dealer from Muhammad b. Muslim from one of the two of them – meaning Abu Ja`far or Abu `Abdillah ÚáíåãÇ ÇáÓáÇã. He said: Whoever has in his heart the weight of a grain of mustard-seed of pride shall not enter the Garden. He said: I said: We wear the fine garment and vanity enters us. So he said: That is only between him and Allah ÚÒø æÌáø.
