Flagellation By Imams Using Weapons?

Salam,

I have come across plenty of narrations from the Imams and Ahl-e-Bayt on the mourning of Imam Hussein(AS) but none of them explicitly mention the imams hitting themselves with swords or chains. I would appreciate it if anyone can quote a suitable reference that whether they did or did not do this.

There is no such narration because they (as) never did it. However there are plenty of narration on how they recommended people to mourn. None of the narration mention hitting yourself

Hitting one's body with swords/chains/knives/blades/etc. = culture = biddah <> Sunnah.
