I want to clarify the Shia view on this (why bother google when I can ask you fine folks)

Is there a consenus among Shias that the Prophet s.a.w was martyred as opposed to having a natural death/fever? Was it related to an incident involving a Jewish woman who tried to poison the Prophet s.a.w?

Unless I'm mistaken, all of the Infallibles were martyred with the exception of the Imam Mehdi who is still alive.

Is there a difference of opinion on this matter for Shias?

There is not a consensus among shias about this matter. However, the claim that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died as a result of being poisoned by a jewish women does not make much sense because this incident took place some years before the death of Muhammad (pbuh) and it doesnt make sense that a poison has no effect on you for 4 years and then you die immmediately, even though you would find a few who might accept this explanation.

Few shias believe that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died a natural death, and there are some like Sheikh Yasser al-Habib in the following video, who claim that ayesha poisoned prophet muhammad (pbuh) on his deathbed:-

There is no consensus on the death of the Prophet (pbuh), and even on the deaths of the Imams (as), Shaykh Mufeed for example disagreed that they were all martyrs.

For example, with regard to Imam al-Jawad (as), Shaykh Mufeed says in Kitab al-Irshad:

"He died in the month of Dhul al-Qa`da in the same year. It was said that he died as a result of poisoning but in my view no report has established that, and I bear witness to that."

In fact, in that book, the only Imams he actually says were martyred were Imam Ali, Imam Hasan, Imam Husayn, Imam Musa al-Kadhim, and Imam Ali al-Ridha, peace by upon them.

However, Shaykh Saduq thought they were all martyred, and this is the popular belief among Shias today.

I only recently found out this alternative view regarding the Prophet's death- that he was martyred.. and I must admit that it has shocked me to my core in a sense, as I've never known this to be a possibility in my mind, especially coming from a Sunni background, so to me this is unthinkable based on the narrations and seerahs I am familiar with. I actually feel a bit upset at the thought to be honest and would not like to consider this being true.

I will look at the video, although I am skeptical that Ayesha would do that to the Prophet s.a.w, and that's the first I've certainly heard of such an account.

Ok, so there is no consensus on such an important matter, especially seeing martrydom has a lofty position in both Sunni and Shia Islam, with an even more symbolic importance for the latter. Yet we have no way of settling once and for all whether or not the Prophet died naturally or from a more malicious cause, let alone that there is also disagreement on whether some or all of the Imams were martryed?

As far as I know, no Messenger is killed... as a Messenger is a Prophet with a scripture and law, as opposed to only being a prophet.

Such as Prophets Ya7ya and Zacharia a.s were both martyred.. however Messengers like Ibrahim, Musa, Eesa and Muhammad pbut, were all saved from this fate.

You do not speak for Shi'ites, you speak for yourself or some group youve become affiliated with.

Look at my post

http://www.shiachat....p-was-martyred/

Btw bro we believe all Prophet's were killed except, al-Khozr, Issa, and Mahdi

YOU do, Why are you calling Mahdi(aj) a 'Prophet'?, you have some seriously divergent views, please dont present them here as mainstream.

i heard about it b4 n only got convinced when reading biilyjo's thread today (without watching the vids)

the bukhari part of the prophet getting his "medicine" against his will and then asking everybody except Abbas to take it .. that one is just plain obvious .. i get surprised again and again how mr. bukhari let those hints slip through masha Allah!

and lets face it .. there is a motive & going to war with Ali (as) isnt much more acceptable than that .. so its no breakthrough disappointment or surprise to me alhamduliLah

Just to add to what I wrote earlier, here is the view of Shaykh Mufeed:

As for what Abū Ja‘far mentions of the death of our Prophet and the Imãms by poison or murder, some of this is confirmed as fact and some not. What is confirmed is that the Commander of the Believers, al-Hasan and al-Husayn, peace be upon them, departed from this world by murder, none of them died a natural death. Mūsã ibn Ja‘far, peace be upon him, was killed by poison. It is highly probable that ar-Ridã (‘Alī ibn Mūsã) was poisoned, yet this cannot be confirmed. As for the others, there is no justification for the claim that they were either poisoned or murdered or killed through persecution, since the reports concerning this matter are extremely confused and there are no means of proving it definitely.

and there are no means of proving it definitely.

I think this is a very important point. Given the extreme seriousness of the accusation being made here, i think it would be wiser for people to exercise caution to the same degree.

Bump.

I still don't feel I have a satisfactory answer for this.

I even posed this question yesterday on the Q & A program with Sayed Muhammed Al-Musawi on AhlulBayt TV. He just briskly answered saying both Sunni and Shia sources confirmed the Prophet was poisoned.

Is the allegation that the prophet died from poisoning, and thus was killed as opposed to dying naturally the most widely held and mainstream view then? Is it the majority opinion?
